Because his kit is binary in the way it plays out making him either useless if he;s too weak or oppressive as sod if he's too strong, his model is bad, his animations suck, his VO is old and minimal, and his lore needs a revamp for the new canon.

He's before Yorick simply because Yorick needs more work done. Riot has multiple rework teams so these things are happening at the same time; Ryze didn't cause Yorick to slow down in terms of progress or anything.

Aside from the things that sharjo said,Ryze also suffers from the problem that he is really difficult to play right now(you have to time the stacks correctly to activate your passive in the right moment and spam your spells in just the right order for maximum effect),despite the fact that he is supposed to be a beginner-friendly champ.

Because he's cancer,unhealthy,toxic,unreliable,anti fun,no counterplay champ.

Playrate in the competitive scene isn't the only factor for when Riot needs to determine who requires a Champion Update and who's next in line for one. Ryze's full VGU is happening for a few reasons:

  • His kit is unhealthy- His balance levers are pretty bad and his abilities, in general, could use some work.

  • When they were doing his last update, they didn't have enough resources to complete his Visual Update, which limited them with the kit changes. Now that they've got enough resources for a full Visual & Gameplay Update, they finally have a proper opportunity to get him right, in terms of everything (AND they can go absolutely crazy with the new kit to do so).

  • Reason number 2 also leads us to the fact that Riot didn't feel like they hit the mark with Ryze's last update.

-_-

why before yorick

Ryze is just a smaller VGU, so he'll be finished first. They've never de-prioritized Yorick since they started working on him a year and three months ago. Don't forget that Yorick is also a minion-mancer, a type of champion who's always more resource-thirsty (in terms of development). Anyways, Ryze and Yorick are worked on by different Pods (Teams) of people, so work being done on one won't affect the other.
