Some more questions for Reav3:

  1. Are Tryndamere, Twisted Fate, Master Yi, Katarina, Janna and Soraka also on the list? they somewhat received a Visual Update in the past
  2. Is Singed also on the list? we know he only got a 'geometry' and texture update but he could still use some new splashes as well.
  3. Are Sherwood Forest Ashe and Rugged Garen still being looked at for splash updates?

Rugged Garren is for sure on the list, That splash needs to be like 10x more rugged then it already is.

The jury is still out on Sherwood Forest Ashe, haven't discussed it to much with HUGEnFAST yet. Haunted Maokai is another one that me and HUGEnFAST go back and forth on as to weather it needs a full new splash or just needs to be polished up.

Good to hear that you and HUGEnFAST are discussing Haunted Maokai. I personally feel like it only needs to be polished up, the splash, rather than be remade from scratch. :P

Fully agreeing on this. It looks very good in my opinion, just needs to match post-update in-game model and perhaps have a few more ghastly visuals here and there.

He needs to be ruggedly attractive. Covered in dirt and with scars. Don't make him all shiny with perfect skin, he needs to look like he's been through some serious stuff. Rugged is the perfect description for the skin, and the splash-art. It's not refined and perfect, it's painterly and somewhat messy.

that's really hard to explain now that I'm thinking about it. partly, he seems more like a cool character than just a WoW warrior, with less emphasis on the giant shoulders and more on leather and a kind of heroically rugged overall look. I like the pose, and the design of the clothes. like he has big shoulders but its less cartoonishly big and the same goes for his gloves, etc

I'm not sure what's even wrong with it that needs updating, other than the fact that it looks watercolored almost, rather than the way you guys usually color splash arts. that, and the sword is admittedly a little wonky, but i'll be a little sad if you throw out the whole splash rather than 'shen' it (just adjusting it a bit like the swords in shen's base skin for his rework).

I'd also say the quality of the art is, sword aside, pretty good. head and shoulders above the others slated to be replaced.

Polished up, definitely imo. It looks very good, but it just needs to match his model post-update. He's in a pose which makes him look really cool and intimidating, and I must say, it's one of your finest works considering the how old that splash is.

How do I even change splashes manually in the new client? When the Beta is over, and the legacy client is no more, I fear I will have to do the work all over again about map mods, custom logins (whatever even happened to the .swf support? I got no audio) and splash arts.

Because there is no way I will part with this one:

Isn't Fiora one of them, or am I missing something? _To be fair, I am likely missing something, because I am tired AF atm. Was just too many images here for me to mentally sort right now. _

Yes, I know my post wasn't entirely on topic, but for those, myself included, who may not like all the new splash arts, I'd like to know if the option to revert or change them manually them will be kept.

So, unless I'm mistaken, we're talking about champions that's reveived a change in some way here, but not been given new splash arts yet?

In order to convince Reav3 to keep the old Rugged Garen splash, you must provide the blood of 20 Teemos & 5 pounds of salt from Yasuo mains. Then once the stars align, release 10 skins for the Urgod. Once these tasks are completed, the Rugged Garen splash will achieve immortality & will never be looked at for an update.

Well, that or make a petition thread asking whether the splash should be updated or not. But this option is boring, so it's obviously the illogical one here.

There's definitely something about the current splash that people love. I think there's a way to do a new splash that retains what's great about the old one - what do you really like, specifically, about the current splash?

There's something about the style- It's very rough and feels unrefined but it's also very "painterly" (which applies to both Garen and the background). It's not flashy or "shiny" like most modern splashes- It's got this feeling of simplicity and modesty (which are two things that compliment each other a lot).

Also, that might be more of a thing that applies to me rather than most other people, but I also really like the lighting in the splash. It's almost holy, but it's also very natural, and the way it comes from behind all of those trees. It makes Garen look kind of heroic but also makes the whole scene looks ethereal (and very calm), but not in an outworldly way. I can almost hear the peaceful chirps of birds invisible in the blurred depths of the forest.

EDIT: Also, I realize the you probably can't retain all of these in the modern, updated splash (especially when considering whatever direction you'll take with it), but those are mostly the things that I personally find charming in the current splash.

I left my feedback for this splash in another reply but I thought id say, I don't think I'm married to the painterly part of the art, the way its colored. if you guys took the original line art, and did a different background or punched up the colors, id probably still be happy. I think the pose is great though, and the design of the character, and the fact that hes not insanely bulky looking.

if you did do a new background, which seems super likely, whether its a brand new splash or not, i'd go for something very 'dragon trainer tristana', with the nice view of the green cliffy high fantasy area with the open blue sky. but that's just me.

I actually like to think dragon trainer tristana is in the same world with all those RP skins, and gravelord Azir maybe, partly because they were all the same patch, but also it just works so nicely

Well, I like that it's just a chill version of Garen. It's not the usual "bulky super soldier charging into battle with bravado & giant shoulder plates". It's something different, it's shows Garen as a regular guy.......well, fantasy world regular guy. Garen is simply just an everyday swordsman walking around in a forest. Though, I guess the same could be said about the skin too rather than just the splash. The splash art was what made me buy the skin in the 1st places though.

Personally, I'm not against updating the Rugged Garen splash as long as the new splash keep the average joe feel. Not grand & over-the-top, but a simple & calm badass guy. I mean, have you seen this:

It's one of the few skins that doesn't show an action pose. Some of us like that variety, especially on Garen.

I think something should be done about it like what happened with Spellthief Lux (my favourite skin splash in the game before AND after it was updated) how it very much preserved the feel of the original and even kept most of the same elements, just brought it up to today's standards.

Kind of off topic but Silent Night Sona looks awesome as it is in my opinion. I don't see why you need to change her, it is only of my favourite splash arts.

Would Kennen and Akali be considered for the splash art updates as well? Shen got his recently with his update while the former two still use older splash arts for their skins with some being the placeholders from the Chinese splash arts.

I can tell why Akali needs a VGU, and why Kennen needs a VU, but why does he need a gameplay update?

I think both lack a bit in terms of counterplay. There isn't much you can do to evade Akalis ultimate and there isn't much you can do if a kennen with his ult on runs into your team and zhonyas,stunning everyone.

Also in general I think Akali lacks a bit in terms thematic uniqueness compared to the other ninjas(Shen has his spirit sword,Kennen is the electro master of the game,Zed has his shadow clones,wheras Akali is just a kunoichi) and I think Kennens skillset feels kinda clunky.

What about Xerath? He got gameplay update 3 years ago and updated for both texture and animations even though textures were minor. I think Runeborn, Battlecast and Scorched Earth Xerath splash arts outdated in next level. They're nearly exactly same with color changes, even their positions are super similar.

They need the glory of his base splash art. It is awesome.

I think in regards to Splash-Art updates and which champions come next, the priority should probably go;

Karthus and Gangplank. Both of these champions splash arts suffer massively from Character AND Style disposition. Their Splash-arts do not even resemble the champion at this point, as well as the style being VERY dated.
Majority of the splash arts do not resemble close to the skins in-game.

Next up imo would be Sivir. Her splash-arts do some-what resemble the champion, that by looking at her iconic weapon, you are able to recognize her. The main issue with her splash-art is the insane style difference they possess. They resemble something done by an amateur, at least by Riot Standards. (That could be said about a lot of current Splash Art's however). They also have INCREDIBLY bad resolutions, being blurry when opened up on the new Beta cilent. In my personal opinion, that warrants Sivir as having a high priority on the list.

Garen suffers from very similar issues, however his Splash Arts are a much better resolution, at least better in the sense they aren't blurry.

Following that I believe a lot of other champions splash-arts to be forgiveable, and would be able to age for another 1 - 2 years fine enough.

That being said, I believe when push comes to shove, Ashe and Sona's skins would be at the bottom of the Priority list. They both possess very nice splash-arts, that resemble both the champion and the skins. Imo Ashe falls dead last on the Splash Art update list, followed by Sona in second last, and then probably Annie thereafter. (I may also be biased in that I do not want to see Riot update Ashe's skins at all. As they will probably destroy her individuality like they have done with MANY other female champions in these updates.)
