@Riot the New Traditional Trundle Splash Is Wrong

I'm probably going to get some flack for this because others seem to like it, and it probably won't get as far as other splash complaining threads but here it goes:

I'm a really big fan of Trundle's original lore and his new lore. I have been very proud to own the Traditional Trundle skin, and in fact it is what led me to main him and it is also a small part of why I came back to League again after I took a two year break from the game.

The traditional skin was supposed to be a preservation of the _CHARACTER _ before their rework. When I heard you were going to redo Traditional Trundle's splash to look like the new trundle I got worried. I convinced myself eventually that you might still try to get the character of the cursed troll and not the troll king in the splash.

You have failed to create a splash of Trundle the Cursed Troll. Now this "traditional" skin just looks like a

What if Troll King but instead jungle?

sort of inspiration instead. It is absolutely wrong for the purpose of keeping that piece of the old character for his fans. Its actually a backwards way to take this considering the new Troll King character was conceived as a "what if" skin for the old Trundle.

The cursed troll was goofy and humbled by everything in his life. He looks like this:

or this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLktF4x0Oxw&#t=0m25s

HE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THIS

This is a bored, dead serious character. He looks like he is sitting on some sort of throne and looking over some place he has claimed.

Go down here: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Trundle/Background Find the "Previous Lore" Did you find it? Take your time.

...

#NOW WHERE IN RUNE TERRA DOES IT MENTION THE DAMN THRONE OR A QUEST FOR KINGSHIP? WHAT ABOUT THIS IMAGE, BEYOND THE BOILS WOULD SUGGEST THIS IS ANY SORT OF REPRESENTATION OF THE OLD TRUNDLE? HE BARELY HAS OPEN WOUNDS FROM HIS LIFE-CHANGING AFFLICTION!

This splash is not Tradtional Trundle.

Its just this smug bastard... (who's lore I also like) http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/f/f5/Trundle_Render.png/revision/latest?cb=20150202211451

... with a palette swap. The original transition from old Trundle to new Trundle was far more than a palette swap and this splash art is not.

Trundle's new classic voiceover is probably the only voice that would match this character, the goofiness of the Traditional voice and its appearance in game are very mismatched with this new splash.

The artist who made the splash did a good job making a new trundle skin, but they did a terrible job capturing the old Trundle.

I am asking you, Riot to please change this splash and make it better portray the personality of Traditional Trundle and not the Troll King. You can draw him in the same shape and visual style, but please make him do something else entirely in his art. He shouldn't be this "I'm powerful and you should totally respect me" bored ruler character.

Edit: Looking at the other threads for some reason or another others seem to think this new splash is sexy. This raises an interesting point: What is physically sexy about guy who has magical über-leprosy?

Trundle's old lore:

Trundle became a horrifying creature whose flesh constantly sloughs off his body, only to be re-grown in an unremitting cycle.

This splash is lacking in even showing his disease to begin with, but they also make him look perfectly healthy and fine. That's like depicting Karthus as a catholic priest preaching about how good life is. No, not a skin for Karthus, not a pre-death Karthus but THE Karthus in game right now absolutely contrasting with his lore. It is totally backwards and unfaithful to the character.

The old trundle was about his vulnerabilities and his determination. His was the story an underdog that nobody loved who fought to find purpose. Show us that in this splash instead.

** TL;dr Make him hunched over in a random forest clearing with a goofy smile again or something conveying the older character please. Also throw in some more gaps were his flesh fell off.

** Don't get me wrong: its great art, but it is NOT the traditional Trundle. Edit: I would also like to just add that I do like the other two splashes. They look absolutely fantastic. It's just this one that bothers me. **

If you took the time to read this, Riot or boards-goers thank you. If you just showed up to auto-whiteknight-downvote for Riot because you "just like" whitewashing this awesome and original character better then... idk... step on a LEGO or something.

Edit: In an effort to give the splash and its artists more credit to prove I do not hate it, here is my most positive spin on this interpretation of Trundle:

First some notes on little details the artists probably intended: --I now see all the areas with disease a little better. They appear to be obscured greatly by the darkness. They are very accurate to this: http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/2/21/Trundle_Traditional_Screenshots.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/613?cb=20150508234801

--On the idea that he might be in constant pain, he may actually be sitting at this angle because he is rather than to create a dark and forboding appearance --Also might be be trying to use the lighting to hide his plague wounds

With all that in mind, here is a defense of the splash:

The situation could be the Cursed troll from the old lore exhausted and on the "throne" which is actually just the current available place to sit. Heck it could even be in the ruins of his tribe's village after their plague finally wipes them out despite the efforts of the shamans that cursed Trundle. He is probably brooding over what happened.

Its still a bit of a stretch. I'm not ready to give Riot credit for continuing the story of Traditional Trundle through a single piece of art work after they and the people that apparently exist who dislike traditional skins are so absolutely sure Riot would never do such a thing as that anyways.

I agree 100%. The new splash is the exact opposite of everything Traditional Trundle.

I'm the one responsible for the other thread on Trundle classic splash art, I do find it really sexy specially because he doesn't look leprous or dirty at all... that being said, this is the exact problem riot saw with traditional skins and why they decided against them a while ago.

Currently Trundle isn't the leprous troll anymore and keeping his old splash art would just be very confusing and against fidelity on splash art vs in game looks.

I think they could add some of his disease on this splash art though.

I do think it looks very good, but I understand your pain, and I think if something like them saying they'll keep traditional trundle 'traditional', then it's necessary.

I LOVE the new splash.

Finally the splash art looks like the in-game model.

I get your point and everything, but I have a few counterpoints for you to consider. Why not make this skin, a whole new one, and simply leave the old traditional splash? Trundle in the Jungle perhaps?

Also skins DO NOT represent the character in any way shape or form, like we have Noxian poppy, Dreadknight Garen, etc. Skins just show alternate forms to a character.

Remember, new lore and everything, they will want to make it so the old trundle basically has little to no place in the current league.

I don't always play Trundle, but when I do, I prefer Traditional Trundle.

I like it and I'd be really disappointed if it was changed.

Consider this: after all, both the new and the old Trundle are the same Trundle.

Yeah, aestethically the old Trundle was a bit more pitable and goofy ( even thought the latter was mostly because of the old graphic style of riot, i mean look at Master Yi compared to Yasuo) but they were both trolls: brutal and power hungry. Even old trundle. Mostly old trundle, i dare say.

He condemned his whole tribe to death because they abandoned him and he did not want to look back, and this speakes volumes for his personality. In fact, i dare think that old Trundle would have become the Troll King aniway if his story kept going, imposing himself over his own tribe by threating them to not restore their curse, and i think that probably this was the course that Riot intended for him only that jungle plagued trolls had no place themselves in their lore that were rebuilding so they harshly put him in the cold. Literally.

I still think that he needs more focus on the plague in the splash, maybe by actually showing his face which is the most infected area, but to me is not that far from old Trundle.

I love the new splash art it is beautiful but I do agree it doesn't play homage to the old Trundle that well. However I have found a way into fooling myself into believing that this could work. Fake it until you make it. This new splash still represent the old Trundle albeit not the rotten flesh troll but the lonely one.

It was during these times that he sometimes thought that being bullied was better than being alone. At least people could stand to be around him, even if it was just to make fun of him.

This scene paint this aspect of Trundle quite well. Trundle sitting alone but he is not necessarily sad because trundle isn't the type to have regret. Yes he maybe alone but he still proud of the troll he became to be.

Also we may never get a truly grotesque splash art because riot are removing blood from splashes so stuff that maybe too gory might as well be removed or never added.

When I think of living in eternal pain in a hell of boiling flesh, lounging about on a stone throne doesn't really come to mind, no.

Gafugarion5/1/2016, 12:29:55 AM2 votes

Mmh I'll keep the new trundle. New Karma sucks though, no fans.

Nova Prime5/4/2016, 8:41:04 AM1 votes

I agree wholeheartedly with you but I'm also in love with the new splash and I don't want it to go to waste. I don't think Riot will let that happen either.

This, I didn't have this opinion but now that I read this it's crystal clear for me.

SettDownShutUp4/29/2016, 9:49:33 PM1 votes

Prediction: They produced new splash art because the traditional skins along with other 'updated' skins will be re-added to the shop.

(Not that I'm against this mind you.)

Seth the Bum4/29/2016, 10:14:28 PM1 votes

Everything you said is completely true Dragon270. I'm positive Riot won't change their mind on this, however. They seem pretty intent on burying all old lore when they come up with new stuff. Hell, even Karma's kit itself was mutilated of all traces of duality when those three reworks came about.

Hinoiri4/29/2016, 11:16:13 PM1 votes

ok so ii can say right now that this more so represents what he looks like in game because the old traditional trundle splash looked like a little gremlin from the 1986 movie labyrinth.. the one with david bowie http://i.imgur.com/gXETi.gif although not as prominent his disease/skin is still grody and its a modern version of what he used to be. its still in the mindset of what trundles old lore was like but with the improved art style riot now has it looks like it belongs in this game compared to the little labyrinth creature it was before. i think it falls in line with the splash art placeholder updates in honesty

Whyte Lyon4/30/2016, 2:39:12 AM1 votes

After reading this post I kinda sympathize with Dragon270 or anyone else with the same opinion here. I for one wasn't playing League back when Trundle got his update and until now I wasn't even aware of Trundle's old lore but by bringing that to my attention I can't help but think what happened in Trundle's update is very similar to what happened to Gangplank but in reverse. What I mean by that is like Dragon270 said Trundle's VU was a "what if" moment and a moving forward in regards of the character's story. GP had the same thing with his VU, the difference was GP had already reached his peak as a mighty and fearsome leader in lore and now he's in a similar place to where Trundle started off pre VU. Riot even gave us GP's version of a Traditional Trundle skin with Captain GP This is where I sympathize because I fucking love GP and had Riot stuffed up his traditional skin I would be pretty pissed as well. However I am also fully aware that Captain GP isn't meant to be a full on traditional skin like Trundle's was, otherwise it would look goofy like GP's old visual was. Maybe a counter argument to your opinion Dragon is that Riot wants to totally forget about old Trundle and so to do that they need to make Traditional Trundle look more like new Troll King Trundle. In a sense and I would hate to tell a fan this but you indefinitely will have to get over this opinion.

Here's to hoping, though very unlikely Riot changes the Traditional Trundle art to something more accurate.

Oh god....another one of those I hate change threads. Prepared for a " i can state my opinion" response. So can I. It's pointless talking about it because nothing is gettign reverted....so to bring the idea up that it looks nothing like the new art is obvious and and petty to even compplain about..... It was a mistake to join story to art..
