Shyvana and Demacian Armor Design

Since Riot’s talented artists unified Demacia’s armor and weapon designs I think it is worth discussing how it might be executed on Shyvana. If you are unfamiliar with what Demacian armor looks like take a look here.

Ron Broyde on twitter posted a Shyvana update concept. This ended up showing up on r/shyvanamains and seemed to be well received. I really like the direction this is going. The floating gauntlets seem out-of-place on the character, but the color scheme is perfect for the new Demacia. I think Shyvana’s design should beef up a bit and be covered in more armor, especially her abdomen. I think showing glimpses of her scales on her arms and legs, like in Ron’s concept is good. I would take A’s top and have it extend over the purple padding with overlapping and sliding plates (so she can bend over). Those plates are an opportunity to make them resemble scales to rhyme with the half-dragon idea. I have always liked the idea that Shyvana’s horns were real in dragon form. The model and splash art seem to leave this ambiguous, but I think claws hands and horns are important to make sure she doesn’t just look like a purple human.

People should be able to look at Shyvana and immediately understand that she is part dragon. Her current splash art makes it very clear with her red hot claws with the palm towards the viewer and her wide wings in the background (either leaving a transformation or entering one). Shyvana is still a willful and fiery person and red evokes that. I would miss the red and gold. Ron’s great compromise of having it turn redder as her fury builds is a great idea. As her fury grows she taps more and more into her draconic strength she also taps more into her viciousness and the color red is a good way to show that. It ties together especially well because she is still connected to Demacia because they both include gold in the color scheme. It also makes for a helpful visual reminder of how close Shyvana is to her transformation, (much like Gnar starts glowing red before he transforms).

What else do you think Riot could do evoke both Shyvana’s draconic and Demacian connections in her character design?

Demacia is extremely discriminatory towards magic of any kind, so they should ditch the purple skin entirely as it doesn't make sense. I mean, seriously, how can the bish catch no suspicion and shes fucking purple. Hello??

I think her skin tone should match her championship skin... Where the scales are around the eyes, but nothing too abnormal.

I looove the armor idea and i love the idea of Shyv changing as she gains fury:

Starting with her skin getting red and then her armor also turning red as her blood boils... From there she can grow horns and claws before finally turning into the monster.

Or. Or scratch everything. Have it to where those floating claws are knives in human form and have her break out the armor in her dragon form... Upon turning human the pieces go back to her and connect in place.

I don't understand why people are constantly imagining Shyvana in armor. I mean, GOD! She is a dragon! She doesn't NEED one! To give you a comparison, Skaarl (Kled's mount as a reminder) is a Drakalop, a dragon subspecie and he is nearly INVINCIBLE! Why would a PURE dragon wear armor? It doesn't make sense! I'm not saying she should be naked, just saying she doesn't NEED an armor. She's already badass WITHOUT it.

My second point is: WHY THE GAUNTLETS?! AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPRACTICAL!? Just imagine trying to hit someone with this kind of battle gauntlet! The plates would fly away and you can't catch someone with these! they are just over-sized "Shields"! If you want to give her gauntlets, fine! But make it so it's practical! Give her a real battle gauntlet, something closer to Issei's Boosted Gear from Highschool DxD! A real goddamn Battle gauntlet! And not some weird, impractical "battle shield"!

The first thing you'd see while opening their Twitter is an art piece featuring an obvious amalgamation of Deviljho (Monster Hunter World; it is incredibly noticeable when you notice the extreme similarity between that and Deviljho's unique body proportion, including its incredibly large and thick tail) and that other famous fan redesign of Cho'gath (if you recall, there is one that features a design where Cho's mouth features an incredibly deep slit to and beyond his neck, which is similar to the art in question), presented as if it's original.

At least do more personal spins than just merging 2 distinct designs from other people, and no, slapping oversized tusks and an additional pair of eyes on top of it barely qualifies as a personal creative injection. This isn't to say you have to change everything for the sake of changing it but figuring out and reiterating the sample items' design rationale on your terms is a key essence in creation.

Well, at least other stuff look neat.
