Like is this meant to be a Voltron-like skin theme or Pacific Rim? Because I thought Mecha had Pacific Rim for itself.
Chembaron Yamada14 votesThe skin line is generally inspired by mecha themed shows. Examples being Gurren Lagann, Power Rangers, Voltron, Neon Genesis Evangelion and so on.
While the Mecha skin line is focusing on "humanoid" mechas, the Super Galaxy skins seem to include mostly animalistic mechas/zoids (with the exception of Super Galaxy Rumble).
Also keep in mind: The actual pilot of the mecha is part of the focus here. They are super heroes in futuristic dresses, piloting a mecha if necessary. Think Power Rangers again, they are first fighting on their own, but if the giant enemy crabgot appears, they use their zoids to keep fighting.
Meanwhile the Mecha skin line is more like Pacific Rim. The pilot is not fighting on his own, his whole purpose is to control the giant mecha.

That's because in the source material of the skin, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, mechs were first seen only piloted and owned by animal humanoid people, which they fashion their mechs to be more animalistic in appearance in some way to match the mechs to themselves and their tastes. Hence the design direction of this skinline gives nods to it.

While the other guy's explanation isn't bad, I think it misses the point a little.
Super Galaxy skinline is directly inspired by the anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. You only need to look at the fact the first skin in the line, Super Galaxy Rumble, is directly inspired by either Kamina or adult Simon from the title, and that the skinline from then has always have many visible elements giving nods to the source material.
In that series, for the sake of simplicity and avoiding spoilers, humans started out living underground while the overground is patrolled by animal people piloting mechs, who are given the order to eliminate any human who dares to come out on the surface from underground. Eventually more and more humans do come out on the surface, and a war started between the 2 major factions. This is why Riot intentionally chooses many animal-humanoids for the Super Galaxy skinline, as a nod to the source material, and that why some of these Super Galaxy skins seems like they're fighting against our "human" technologies such as helicopter.
As for why the skin is very "Earth-y" instead of the name sake giving it an outer space feel, it's because TTGL spent the first half of the title to sort out between the 2 faction's war on Earth, before going into space in the second half. And since we already have space-themed Super Galaxy skins, Riot turned around and backtrack into the earlier aspects of the source material, hence the "Earthbound" setting in the current bunch.

Raven Redeemed2 votesNot a big fan of the Super Galaxy skin line, but I really like Nid's splash. The combination of the foreground, midground (is that a thing?), and background. The distortion around the spear, the light arc from her bracelet, and the pose really conveys the movement in the scene. Plus the lighting and hair detail is impressive.

Thinking about it, the splashes often have Annie on the right side of the splash showing of her abilities or just posing while Tibbers is doing something in the background on the left side.

Oleandervine11 votesVolibear isn't humanoid nor does he transform. Annie has bear that's clearly a mech, and her recall and splash seem to imply some remote control of it. Volibear would be a terrible choice for this line considering that the line seems to be for champs with pets and champs who transform.

Oleandervine2 votesWell I stated champs with pets, which Kindred and Annie qualify for. Rumble, obviously because he's literally the only champion piloting a mech. Fizz is a stretch, but he does have his shark, which operates in the same way that Tibbers and Wolf do, to an extent.

If you look at Kindred, Lamb is clearly wearing a suit, while Wolf is a machine. Something at her control.
Fizz's shark is his mech, and he even enters it in his recall.
Rumble is the original, but his whole thing is piloting a mech anyway.
