A Civilized Complaint on a Few Recent Splashes.

If you look at Ahri's original splash art, you can tell that her face is actually both taller and broader than the new one. The new splash, while it aims for a cuter and smaller look, ultimately doesn't make it look like the same person. Janna's splash art also suffers this but to a greater degree (she has a different body and facial structure in which she's too vertical and skinny : like a twig). Not to mention, I don't really know why Riot is trying to take an approach at making Ahri look less oriental. There's nothing wrong with trying to include every ethnicity in the game, but trying to change facial features for a different look on an existing champions simply makes a champion feel alienating to a player base. For example, if you look at any of Ahri's other skins then compare it to her new classic, it doesn't feel like the same champion. It would be the equivalent of trying to make a champion like xin zhao or Lucian have extremely "generic" facial features so that you could more or less not tell what specific ethnicity that individual is (for example, more beige skin, a generic eye structure, etc). I think most of the playerbase would understand this change of facial structures if this were a skin noncanon to the champion, but I think the defaults should do the original champion justice. Oh yeah, I think Ahri's splash might also look a tad better if you tried to make her lip color the same "beige" look as in her original splash art (but that's just my 2 cents).

And going back to Janna, the summation of my 2 cents is just that she look incredibly frail - like a stick. She's very tall, but also very skinny (both her body and her face). I also feel like the tattoos she originally had and her shorter, stockier look in her original looks better (Even Janna's noncanon skin, forecast Janna, displays Janna's physical features extremely well). I also don't get why she doesn't have pupils anymore.

Taking from another's post, this individual changed Lee Sin's current splash into one that looks, to many opinion's, better:

Those facial features that are a result of ethnic quirks and details in a champion are really what define the familiarity in identifying with said champion. For instance, when Vladimir came put with his new splash art a year and a half ago, it was extremely well done because of the same feel it held to the original. It ultimately did it justice and even glorified what Vladimir "felt" like and was welcomed by the vast majority of the community with open arms. While I feel like the newest array of splashes have done extremely well in doing so (such as Akali's newest splash art) I feel like some of the champions have lost a sense of familiarity to them with their new defaults such as Lee Sin, Ahri, And Janna.

For example, in this fan art of Ahri and Janna (done by Artgerm [Stanley Lau] who did Leblanc's splash art and the Yasuo sneak preview arts), I feel like he really captures the champions really well not just in terms of their themes, but most impressively the facial struture of different champions that suit the individual very well:

Don't get me wrong. From an aesthetic point of view, the artists at Riot have done a phenomenal job (as with every splash art they release); however, I do feel like I'm not alone when I say that with the newest set of the splashes, I'm not the only individual who feels like some of the neweset splashes don't capture the "feel" of a familiar champion (because if they did, I don't think there would be so many people adusting the newest splashes on Lee Sin, Ahri, Etc.)

Here are my splash edits so far. I'll try to do other ones later:

I love you. This was exactly what I was thinking, there's nothing wrong with how Ahri looked Asain when there are clearly other ethnicities in game as well. How they're all of a sudden trying to change who she is, is a no no. About the skins too, yeah. They look like they're not meant for her because she almost looks like a whole other person now. I hope this gets noticed. I miss old Ahri already, why ;-:

It bothers me that Ahri doesn't even look remotely like 'herself' anymore. She's pretty unique in being visually identifiable as Asian. The new splash art makes it seem like an entirely different champion, really. It doesn't match any of her other skins, either. I bought all of Ahri's skins and really enjoy how different they are yet how you can still identify her in each one. I feel pretty disappointed that they plan on doing...this...to her.

As an Ahri player I'm unhappy with the new splash; she looks** far too pale...** and her features are way too soft and cutesy-ish/pink. Your edit on the other hand is absolutely glorious, and even highlights her ears more than the original one; something I hadn't thought was a problem before, but find to be much better after seeing it here... As for Janna (who I also play occasionally) I can see how the new splash is... very different, almost themed minimalistic facially... compared to the old one. Not exactly in a good way. And I will admit that while I own and quite like news reporter Janna, it's not the same face as the original Janna splash (or the new one for that matter) though in all fairness, she's in a different pose, moving towards the point of view, and having to look over her glasses which have been blown by the wind.

Shame the new Ahri splash looks so... different. Almost like some kind of creepy doll; though admittedly I'm biased. At the very least I play using Midnight Ahri.

Ahri = alright as is. No need for Splash Update.

Janna = also alright. The original also seems ok as it is.

Lee Sin = feel bad for the guy. yet don't see much bad in the new image if we use the one fixed.

Vladimir = yep, they got that one. and rumble and veigar also seem better in their new images.

I love that janna pic at the bottom, so good.

keep ahri's original splash kthx Ahri

Arcus Diabolus10/15/2014, 3:53:47 PM4 votes

Ehh, I can go for her original splash, the new one and your edit. The only thing I'm confused about is why she and Janna got new splashes anyway. They didn't need them like Shen or Singed did.

As a artist, they all look fine to me.

Hupsis10/15/2014, 4:58:17 PM4 votes

I don't get this fuss around Ahri. Why can't you just accept it? I always thought she was supposed to be the most beautiful champion in League just cause of her theme. And in my opinion they nailed that in the new splash. She looks kinda dumbfounded/panicked in the tweaked pic as if she is being chased. Riot's version oozes out "come and get me" or "try to catch me, if you can ;)" kind of vibe which fits her theme better.

TenSlashTen10/15/2014, 10:53:14 AM4 votes

art looks fine to me Kind of hard to get fantasy art "wrong" honestly.

Rock MD10/15/2014, 5:32:51 AM4 votes

Holy FUCK that Ahri splash that you made was incredible.

But yeah, what Vaffany said. I just want her to be, well, her.

Misairyu10/15/2014, 6:04:27 PM3 votes

Your Ahri is way better than this new splash art o

Jakethenight10/15/2014, 8:13:00 AM3 votes

But many more of them are SO good. I think they've shown a ton more good than bad with these. (Ezreal, Singed, J4, Blitz, Udyr, Veigar, Shaco, Talon)

Aimi10/15/2014, 9:14:54 AM3 votes

I really think the problem with Ahri new splash art is the hair, it is shorter and puffy around the face. While the old one its long and straight. (shorter ears too) inb4 missing tassel.

Dotintheparadox10/23/2014, 11:18:53 PM2 votes

Also, the new splash has clothing that seems to conform to her body, she still has the thing (Unless the lore team decides to fix what ain't broke again.) where she does not like wearing clothes, so her clothes shouldn't be hugging her like that.

She looks like one of the plastic surgery ridden Chinese models now.

Popstar Ahri10/15/2014, 10:21:20 PM2 votes

I also Hope riot adds the bell to her clothing on the chest on her new splash art.. while the in game has a sound effect of the bell when shes dancing and shows it on her.

Séraphiel 10/15/2014, 10:34:21 PM2 votes

i really LOVE the new splashes especially janna ,well that's only my opinion i guess

Hellioning10/15/2014, 10:38:37 PM2 votes

I just feel that Ahri and Janna look incredibly...neutral. Which doesn't really make any sense for either of them? I mean, maybe Janna, you can make the case that she's 'the calm hiding the storm' or something, but Ahri is playful and flirty in all of her VAs. There's no reason for her to be that bland.

Gunpoint10/15/2014, 11:56:55 PM2 votes

Rito u rooned Ahre splash Ahri

HengTai10/15/2014, 1:30:35 PM2 votes

Nowhere, but actions speak louder than words

deborahcliff10/15/2014, 1:21:01 PM2 votes

artgerm's art is great. but what is with that foot...? sometimes i wonder if artists avoid drawing feet because they don't get enough practice drawing them and don't want them to look ugly...which just perpetuates a vicious cycle.

Gunnlaug10/15/2014, 7:39:53 PM2 votes

I think ahri's face is a little out of shape and Janna's neck is too long... Sh looks like an old lady now and it kinda kills the mood :|

HeadHonchkrow10/16/2014, 4:04:12 AM2 votes

Yeah, I agree with you, especially ahri, but I really like the other changes (Rumble, Singed, Veigar, etc) except shaco, his face looks like a plastic mask all flattened

LET THE DOWNVOTES COMMENCE

Lee's splash is fine. People think he is midair, in the middle of Resonating Strike, but he isn't. He is looking at the post he just kicked into pieces. His head is positioned correctly.

Wullf10/16/2014, 10:49:16 AM1 votes

I do not get what people has against new Ahri and Janna splashes.

Both are gorgeous.

You are talking about old splash like it is the thing that determines the champion and new splash should be just enhanced version of that.

What determines a chmapion are it's: 3D model, Skills, ingame audio and Lore. Then you talk about generic faces. It seems to me that pictures you posted (from Artgerm) are ven more generic.

Though Lee is different story. I do not completely agree with composition, but I acknowledge it's high quality execution. And that is enough for me.

It almost seems that people are against any changes.
