The Darkin just got retconned. Why?
Varus' new lore came out less than a year ago. Kayn isn't AS new but he's still a recent addition to the cast, and a love of Rhaast's lines reflect the idea that there were only a few Darkin on Runeterra. Aatrox's thematics and design needed no update, just his abilities.
All 3 of them are being retconned because of the changes to the Darkin. Sure, most of what they are remained intact, but their motives are now heavily altered and it makes even LESS sense that Kayn can fight Rhaast off.
If you want to bring in older ascended who fell because of the Void, fine, that could be REALLY cool, make a story about that. If you wanted, for example, the Ascended to be thought up as a COUNTER to the darkin's initially unstoppable invasion, that could also be interesting (though it still introduces the problem of shrinking the world down)
But merging the darkin with the ascended?
This is coming from someone who liked pretty much every lore update up until this point, including highly contentious ones like Galio: THIS. IS. A. TERRIBLE. IDEA. It shrinks the world down and it's so soon after the Darkin were reintroduced as a concept to League. What next, are the Yordles going to be Targonians?
This goes far, FAR beyond the glacial pace that the lore has been updating. That, I've been okay with, and even defended in places. BUT WHAT REASON DO WE HAVE TO BE INVESTED IN THIS WORLD IF YOU'RE GOING TO CHANGE IT LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER YOU (seemingly) GET ALL YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW?!
