Zoe Login Theme

Fits, Riot lost a massive opportunity to introduce her coming from the Glade. That fit's better imo...music and all.
The music team at Riot is really redeeming themselves now. Urgot, Warwick, Eve, Galio, Kayn, Camille... they were all forgettable. Last good login themes ended with Rakan and Xayah. Now though, the themes (all we have right now though are the Runes Reforged one and this one, but hey, both are good) actually have some kind of personality again, and they're returning to the good old days. Love this theme, and it's going on my iPod (yeah I still have one of those things). ^^
I don't see how personnal taste can define what make a good login or not.
Because the themes are very coherent with the champions, when you say Urgot, Camille or Warwick, I am kinda baffled at how you judge a composition. I mean, we all have our préférences but except maybe for Kayn (and again I didn't listen too much to this one so it is an unfair treatment), all the themes suit very well their champions and resonnate with them.
Like... How can one not find Camille theme fitting? It scream aristocracy by the choice of the instruments, the beginning reminding of every composition showing a scene in a Renaissance Castale, the higher note of the violin to grasp the attention and also making a sharp sound, sound that sound kinda precise in the ear (as it 'screech'), similar to how a knife would made a sound if rubbing against metal.
Urgot and the doom oppressive theme...
And Warwick... Like, the sound of a beast running through the tunnels of Zaun, the increasing grind to make it 'scarier' as if the beast was tracking you. I think it is a violin or this kind of instrument to make the sound that echo like a wolf crying in the night. And then the dynamic of the tempo to show about the fight, the rampage Warwick make.
Evelynn with the intriguing tone, the trickery, the long note to let it plan an air of suspicion, the voice work to make it resonnating in the head.
What does a theme need to make it link to a personnality for you?
A good login theme tells a bit of the story of who the champion is, and what their personality is.
Camille's theme isn't entirely bad, but it is the start of the decline. Her theme sounds vaguely aristocrat-y and the harpsichord fits the theme of Piltover, but the song has no progression, no story. It's just a tone (and that's the issue. The other themes used to tell a story). The tone fits, but it doesn't say anything other than "Yeah, Camille is a fancy British person from a while back."
And then Urgot... it's not a song. It's just chaotic noise. And sure, while chaos might follow in Urgot's wake, Urgot is not himself chaotic; everything he does is extremely planned out and methodical. The entire "song" just sounds vaguely angry, and there's so much more to Urgot than just anger.
Warwick, again like Urgot, is mostly just a cacophony. There isn't much to the song, and there isn't much of a story, it's just vague, angry sounds again. And, once again, much more to Warwick than anger.
Eve's theme is just vaguely spooky and "mysterious." It doesn't tell you much about Eve, though you could assume she's a sneaky kind of person, maybe seductive with the woman's voice there. So, if I didn't know who Eve was, I'd assume she was a succubus -- which she's really not.
... a good login theme needs to tell the entire story of a champion, not just one aspect of it.
Look at Taliyah's theme, look at Kindred's theme, look at DT Trist's theme, look at last year's Star Guardian theme (especially if you read the lyrics, though I like the sound of the Japanese one better), look at this theme, and so on. The songs fit the champions/skins, and if you listen well, they tell you a story.
How is Urgot about "planning" things out? None of his actions show the mind of a careful sociopath or psychopath, if anything, Urgot showed how he was way more of an anarchist and even idealist about the principe of surviving than anything. He didn't planned a riot carefully, he created it, he put Zaun into chaos itself because he feel adversity and pain are principle to develop the true pinnacle of strength. We are talking about a broken man.
His music is all about the industrial chaos surrounding his changes, the gruesome path he deliver, how his work is one that mean doom for the others. It is a brutal music.
Again, a music is not born to fullfill a story with an end. Jhin music is an example of a progressive story in the music but we go like this, it mean ballad are 'bad music' because they aren't here to make a story from point A to point B.
But again, if industrial sound and metal is for you "Cacophony", I am sorry but it is more about you not really feeling this kind of musics and therefore being adamant to it. Warwick IS about hunger and feral instinct, he is often driven by blood lust, he CHASE people. Litterally. He is something that input fear into the people of Zaun, his music is all about that.
It is a very limited view of how music should be done, it is like saying that you can't consider a one shot novel a good work because it didn't develop the characters for 5 pages. It isn't the goal of the work, and all musics doesn't go the same way.
A song can be about a feeling, an idea, even simply about a sound. You can't limit it to some vague "It need to tell a story" narrative when it was never the intent and many music or song doesn't follow this code.

First off, the login intros are meant to tell a story. They introduce you to the champion.
Second, a ballad, as in classical? Yeah, that's what I call dead music. There is no heart to it, there is no feeling, it's just background noise. Largely forgettable.
That's what WW, Urgot, Kayn and all them have in common: Their themes are forgettable background noise.
But again, if industrial sound and metal is for you "Cacophony", I am sorry but it is more about you not really feeling this kind of musics and therefore being adamant to it.
Oh I often call metal talentless noise. People disagree with me sure, but then, none of them have told me how it does take talent or require any effort/thought. So.
Warwick IS about hunger and feral instinct, he is often driven by blood lust, he CHASE people. Litterally. He is something that input fear into the people of Zaun, his music is all about that.
And where's the part indicating his fear of hurting people that don't deserve it, like in his little story where he saves the girl? Where's the doubt and the regret, missing his former life? Where's him fighting with his inner beast for control? None of that is in the "song" he's got. All it could show is anger -- and once again, much more to the character than that.
It is a very limited view of how music should be done, it is like saying that you can't consider a one shot novel a good work because it didn't develop the characters for 5 pages.
I just call it lazy. If you write a good book, it's not going to fit into just one book unless you make it a few inches thick. Hell, even screenplays for cartoons are dozens if not hundreds of pages.
Likewise, with music, it's easy to evoke a singular feeling or idea. Even beginner composers can do that. But to make your music feel alive, with all the complex emotions and ideas people typically have... that takes a bit more work.
It isn't the goal of the work, and all musics doesn't go the same way.
For a login theme, that is the goal. To introduce you to the champion and who they are.
A song can be about a feeling, an idea, even simply about a sound.
You're right. But I call that "elevator music."
You can't limit it to some vague "It need to tell a story" narrative when it was never the intent and many music or song doesn't follow this code.
Think about any song you know. What does it do? Oh, wow, it tells a story!
Things like dubstep (which isn't music), metal, pop and whatnot just try to evoke a singular emotion or to try and get you to dance -- and they're very forgettable because of that, and classify as elevator music.
I think it is best to leave it at that, any person loving music know that music is more than what you (you being you, me, every person) make it off.
If for you, Metal is a "talentless" style (I mean, there is so much diversity in metal, I wonder how you can even think you have the view to call it talentless but whatever) when it is one of the most technical and fast music style in the world, if it is talentless when many symphonic black metal are about calling stories on the fall of angel or when progressive metal is about working on a musical performance...
Because it ISN'T the goal of this music?
Is Jhin music showing him being a gruesome murder? Does it explain the TERROR he created when he was chased by shen's father? Does it explain EVERYTHING?
Of course not. Zoe music doesn't show her jealousy for lux, it doesn't show that she is aware of a VERY HUGE danger that would destroy the world, it doesn't show that she is socially awkward even.
There is a reason an album is full of DIFFERENT songs. If not, your song would be 45 minuts long. You can't tell everything in 3/4 minuts except if there is only a few things to say.
Also, by taking what you say, it mean that EVERY aspect would be short timed and forced to be switch. "Oh, character X has 17 things about them, let's squeeze that in 4 minuts".
For a login theme, that is the goal. To introduce you to the champion and who they are.
And a presentation isn't about one thing or 10 things, it is a choice, it is a take about a topic, an idea, a person. You can't present everything in 4 minuts, it is not NECESSARY.
I just call it lazy. If you write a good book, it's not going to fit into just one book unless you make it a few inches thick. Hell, even screenplays for cartoons are dozens if not hundreds of pages.
It is utter bullshit. A story isn't about length, it never was. Quality never came from length or numbers, a good story is good. A good writing is good. Good characters are good. What make a good result isn't linear, a story is never limited to a structure because if it was, we would never get different approach and style. Did 'La Fontaine' needed a god damn 10 pages to make a good fable? It is like saying a report has to be 30 pages thick to convey a point. No. It need to be conveyed WELL. That is all. Take 4 or 50 pages as long as what you want to do/convey is done well.
Likewise, with music, it's easy to evoke a singular feeling or idea. Even beginner composers can do that. But to make your music feel alive, with all the complex emotions and ideas people typically have... that takes a bit more work.
But quality never came from... complexity... Quality is making something worthy of inspirating people, be it by a feeling, inspiration, ideal, etc. A music doesn't need to be complex to be good, it is like saying you need to use ten colors in your drawing so it is good.
Art is... far more that technicity or complexity or feelings, it is an overall. It is something that create love/appreciation.
Of course our taste are different, and it is okay, but you can't define QUALITY based on your own bias. I am sad at your lack of open mind on music and art in general but I guess it can't be helped. Thanks for staying civil tho.
That feels like an opinion not everyone is going to agree on.
Oh, no one agrees with anything I say ever. I'm used to it by this point.
Magical!
