Why as a Varus main, am okay with the lore changes
In fact, I love the lore changes. It's a really solid story, well written with a lot of parallels to his old lore. Everyone stating how his old lore was SO much better but I always disliked the one dimensional bull that was his oh so tragic backstory and motivation. The new lore is both more tragic, with more depth to it, AND ties in nicely to the current LoL universe model, as a piece of the puzzle, rather than some nobody doing his own thing.
Parallels
- The two lovers are fighting for each other, the old Varus fought for [the memory of] his family.
- The corruption is in control, there isn't ANY stopping it, at all. People LOVED how old Varus (Me included) was solely dedicated to causing his enemies as much distraught and suffering as he could before time ran out, as it was unstoppable. Well, The two lovers arc version have just lost all control, as old Varus would have eventually anyways.
- Varus is the Darkin. Face it, there was so much speculation that old Varus was already a Darkin, so the new one being actually, canonically a Darkin isn't even a drawback. The only difference is Varus is the Darkin now, not the person wielding it.
- He is still fighting for vengeance.
People are just upset, as they have been for every single lore retcon and grab the pitchforks when something happens to their standard perceptions of Varus. I believe that the lore team handled this as best as they were able. And he's gay btw, if it were a straight couple, Varus would probably have needed a new model to represent it. Note how in the music video, Varus seemed a base humanoid figure, which then took the physical traits of both the men to create his form. Though that's most likely not the case, it's what I interpreted through it.
(Btw, whoever wrote the comic, "He said our souls would be as one(4/29)", was a wickedly hilarious example of irony and I wanted to call attention to it.)
