He could have just been heading to Ionia, or maybe the Shadow Isles but that's doubtful. Or maybe heading East from Bilgewater by sea is a faster way to get to Demacia than going west over the continents

Riot's confirmed that there is more on Runeterra than just what the map shows. The map shows about 1/6 to 1/5 of Runeterra. The lowest part of the map is about where the equator is. To the east is likely uncharted land or part of the lands of where the Ruined King came from.
