[BUG] Visiting nonexistent thread does not produce appropriate error message

MXXIV··3 votes·1,204 views

Recently I clicked on off-topic thread with the intention to comment that it's off-topic. The topic was already deleted when I was clicking. The link is here: en/c/site-feedback/FEMRMEkZ-bug-can-t-connect-to-the-game

The message should be 404 or something, not blank page.

I think it should be a 403 or something like that.

When a post is "deleted," it's actually just switched to it's only viewable by the OP.

Didn't know, never had a post deleted. But StackOverflow tells you 404 for deleted posts even though 10k+ rep users can actually see them. 404 implies "it's not there" while 403 implies "you have to login somehow to see it".

Technically you're right though.

Maybe a 401? I always mix up 403 and 401.

I don't even know what 401 is without googling. Maybe request timed out?

One of them is basically "You need to be logged in to view this" and the other is "You need to be logged in as someone else to view this." I believe the second is 401, but I'm not sure.

So I googled this and 401 is actually for HTTP authentication (when browser prompts you for password and name for a website). You know this from router administrations most likely. Normal websites do not use HTTP auth because it's VERY insecure.
