Note this is just a beta, they may change it.

That being said they are unlikely to change the actual format of this forum based off of how they have handled it so far. If anything they'll try to add in some features and more versatility. My recommendation is, if you don't like this format or style of forum, don't use this and stay on the old forums.

Tayschrenn1 votes

While that is good advice for the time being...the purpose of a beta is to eventually roll out the product. When this product is rolled out it will be replacing the existing model and the option of not using this one no longer works.

MackleDoge2 votes

Riot has already said they will not be "replacing" the old forums nor will they be closing them. So you will always have the option to not use this one if you prefer the other.

Tayschrenn1 votes

hrm, I hadn't seen that announcement. It seems like a difficult thing to do to try and merge content from two discrete forums...and if they don't merge them then they effectively split the community which seems like a poor choice too. Any insight?

MackleDoge1 votes

I imagine they'll leave it much as they have it right now. The content on this forum is different from the content on the other forum and whether or not people chose this one or the other is purely preference. As far as when this goes live, I think the main way that it will be felt is the presence of Rioters in the forums. As it is a lot of the community feels Riot isn't particularly active in the old forum, that they choose Reddit over it. So having them start being here over the original forums will probably create some bitterness.

Important Note Whether or not Rioters post here, the original forums, Twitter, Reddit etc is their personal preference according to Riot posts from yesterday. They elect whether they post or not and if so where.

Actually, they said that they would force that to happen, but if they released community and the forum fell down to a very small minority of people (read as <1% of current users) they would most probably close the forums.

I understand where you're coming from, but this is not necessarily true. We've slowed down small feature releases based on evaluation of feedback that we've received from the community (you) to make some major shifts which will be coming to light pretty soon.

There's also an easter egg when viewing comments that lets you view the posts in a flat/chronological listing similar to the strategy and view presentation that vBulletin offers (add ?show=flat to your URL in the address bar). We're likely going to expand a little bit on that view as an alternate way to read / reply to comments.

I'm beyond excited with the direction this platform is going, and it's all based and shaped from player involvement and feedback.

MackleDoge2 votes

Right, I'm aware of that hidden functionality, I just feel like that sort of functionality should be made more apparent and easier for those that aren't familiar with how URLs function and how to manipulate forums and the like. Honestly, as long as the old forums aren't entirely thrown away or Riot decides to just totally abandon those that elect to use that as opposed to this new platform, I'm alright with the direction that you guys are hoping to take this.

Tayschrenn1 votes

Well I greatly appreciate that you guys are actively listening and interacting with us. That alone is worth its weight in gold.

Nothing is ever "locked in". I'm curious though - what specifically do you dislike?

MackleDoge2 votes

Just a small note, since you're on this thread. I think the beta forum could use an additional sub-community a'la general discussion in the original forums. Sometimes there are topics people want to talk about on here that aren't strictly League related and as it stands there isn't necessarily an appropriate spot for those threads.

I've also noticed that at certain points in conversations the nested portion for replies will reach a limit where you can no longer reply to a certain indentation level of nesting, and that should be looked into for either allowing continued expansion or some other manner of fixing that. Personally, I think it would be a good idea to have some more actionable form of moderation in this iteration of the League forums, something along the lines of flagging a post for questionable content (such as pornography and racist or homophobic content) as well as the ability to perhaps report a user for spam. Every once in a while you'll see users who are posting scam links in conversations or users who post their thread in every single sub-community in a copy pasterino fashion and I think it would be advisable to include a system in the forum to remove such posts or delete maliciously intended comments through moderation.

@Somelamepun I agree with this completly. A little more of the old forums should trickle in here with catagorys and such.As it stands right now everything feels too thrown together.

That being said being able to add a quote insert would be very welcome as well for when conversations start getting really long.

The reason they did not (at the time) include GD was partly because they felt GD filled a negative niche.

Basically, everyone ends up going toward GD, and GD is just a blob of tons of unrelated posts, most of which would perfectly fit another thread.

The problem with that is that the only way to make sure only "General" would end up in GD is with a gigantic amount of moderation.

For now, they opted out, they said that it wasn't out of the question to bring a kind of GD in (most probably off-topic), but that they felt it would end up having a negative influence in their opinion.

MackleDoge2 votes

I get what you're saying, and to a certain extent that is pretty accurate as far as describing what GD can contain. But I think that is pointedly ignoring all the positive topics and discussions that occur in GD. Furthermore, I feel a lot of that sort of issue and problem could be resolved by attempting an improved moderation method.

ploki1221 votes

Well, their goal is that all the positive threads still have a community that is more or less related and people post it in there...

MackleDoge1 votes

That can still be done in GD if Riot makes the effort to appropriately moderate the forum. The community here only seems more positive because it's in beta phase. If you believe that once this goes officially live that there won't be any negative posts or discussions or a slew of increased spam and such, then you're kidding yourself. The format of the forum doesn't influence any of that, the moderation of the forum does.

ploki1221 votes

I honestly believe it's 50-50.

The fact that the Reddit style's homepage is by default sorted by votes, only the most relevant posts should reach the playerbase's sight.

Also, with the amount of posts being created in GD every minutes (we can probably even say every seconds), it's pretty much impossible to properly moderate it. Even less when you add onto that another ~20-40 other smaller forums.

I just find the format very hard to process and feels somewhat overwhelming. I will say that the presentation here is better than that of reddit but it would still make coming to the forums a less pleasant experience for me. It has likely been discussed elsewhere but I haven't seen it: why go with the reddit style as opposed to just upgrading the standard format forums to have basic features?

Bob LLama2 votes

Thanks for the response, Oconnomo. I'd actually like to probe this a little further if you don't mind. By format do you mean nested comments, or do you mean more the colors and spacing/sizing visual stuff? Is it more about how it looks or how it works? What makes it a less pleasant experience?

jwf9992 votes

Honestly, I dont really care either way but the one thing i think should happen to regular formus is the update thing under your profile in the top right corner.

ploki1221 votes

I think the biggest incentive to going Reddit-style instead of BB-style is the ability to have indented replies.

In a perfect world, I believe we could have 2 different view styles for all threads, and that indented replies would simply quote the parent (up to 2-3 level of indentation). But that's for a later date.

Tayschrenn3 votes

For me it is the nested comments. Feels incredibly busy. Aesthetically (colors, sizes, and spacing) this site is pretty good and is actually better overall than reddit. As far as being less pleasant it just feels (to me) like more work to read things here as compared to a traditional forum.

Thanks for the insight.

I'm not who you were asking, but here's my two cents. The people who will like this format the least are FEK users, because we are moving from a great forum, with bold, personalized Avatars, embedded links, personal black list, and more and more and more, to a hard to look at, less intuitive to use format.

The biggest thing about the "LoL" forums, is that they should have SOMETHING to do with LoL. The generic white background hurts the eyes, aesthetically just doesn't look good, and fails to brand the entire page with League of Legends. Make the background the texture and color of faded old scroll. Add some visual hints that this website is in any way related to League of Legends.

But aside from how you can make THIS forum good, the reason so many of us like the other way is the traditional chronological order system. Dedicated gaming boards have always used this that, and we already have Reddit, so no need to copy their system.

edit: After another moment's thought, and my eyes burning and watering from looking at this page without my Gunnar's on, your number one priority should be making this a page that one wants to look at. The blinding white background, combined with it's entirely generic, nothing to do with LoL setup. There is the logo at the VERY top, and a little bit of art at the top, but after you scroll down even a little bit, the sidebars are just matte gray, and there's no more visible mention of LoL. Fix this and fix the background color and texture, until then, if I cherish my eye health and vision at all, I will avoid this site!

This new style really is awful, and worse than that, this website is horribly brand. Browsing these forums is like eating stale, untoasted, unbuttered old white bread, without something to wash it down.

Having said that, for Riot, once something has made it to "Beta", it's pretty much decided. For companies like Riot, Blizzard, and some other PC gaming companies, they are riding an ego wave due to massive success, and are sure that they have a "vision" that we may or may not be able to understand, or agree with.

So rather than using Beta as a means of Community Feedback, it's usually more a bug testing/server load/Q&A type phase.

So long story short, there's a very strong chance that we are "locked into this".
