for example i can find people with discussions created a year ago.

These boards existed alongside the original forums for a long time
As Rainbowe Dash said, Boards have been around for about a year and a half, now. I have two things to add:
- Before the old forums were around, Boards was used by a small community of beta testers (myself included).
- They weren't always called Boards. They used to be the "Community Beta"
The amount of changes I've seen Boards go through has been really cool.
