I have a survey that I just posted on Reddit for a feminist class that I am in. My group and I are doing a presentation on women in league of legends. Please take the time to do the survey and upvote!

Took the survey. Interesting questions.

On the "Do you prefer male or female champions" question, I would have liked to have seen an option that fit my actual answer, which was from a utilitarian approach.

There were some questions that led me to an inconclusive answer (such as what roles do female players typically play, and other questions that could be an unknown to some players). But, by being forced to answer the question, the results are skewed. Something to take into consideration when evaluating responses.

Thank you for taking the survey, but this is mainly on purpose. I stated in another reasoning for this. It is basically forcing you to pick a spot and the natural instinct people are choosing is support. Other questions are similar to this to see what someone will pick if they don't have a choice to pick a neutral side. It makes it more interesting because you have to pick. I know some questions will be skewed but those ones are the less important questions. Stuff like the male or female champion wise is to displace you and make you uncomfortable. More important questions like the one that you stated about roles have other options that you can pick. No one is forcing people to pick support but it still has a 62% pick rate. That is where the stereotypes of female players shine. But i'm glad you found it interesting and many of the comments on here and reddit will be noted in my presentation. I will also come out with the results and post them if you would like to see them.

I started taking the survey, but after a few questions I had to stop. Nothing to do with the subject matter, but because I had responses that weren't aligned with the available options. So in order to complete the survey I would just have to choose invalid answers.

This will most certainly lead to a skewed result set.

I understand that may be the case for some of the questions, that is on purpose to push you into uncomfortable directions that will lead you to stereotyping. There are select questions that are going to be analyzed more than others. This may be due to lack of options or the context of the question.

That... makes no sense. You can't validly claim that gamers have a certain stereotype if they are FORCED to choose a stereotype.

Once again I will say this, I am not forcing sterotyping but nor giving the option to be neutral. Therefore, people fall back onto their stereotypes

Also, even though it is a survey, it also is fulfilling the the rest of the requirements for my project. The other main requirement is a social awareness campaign.

The reason why this wasnt the title is because people are more willing to take a survey than discuss and issue.

The data will have a part of it, but the comments are also extremely important. How many times have you come back to respond about a feminism survey that has no meaning to you in future context? Just being able to comment on certain things brings up the issues without them knowing off the start. My groups project is the view of female gamers, champions, sterotypes, and sexism in video games. We have a main focus on league of legends. Keep in mind, I love this game and I have several accounts but I didnt want this issue tied to my normal account due to spam reasons. We plan on taking certain questions and reactions into play when analyzing the data. Our goal is to make people question, even if its a critique because it shows that we made the issue present enough where someone has to question it.

By not offering the ability to be neutral, you're forcing stereotyping and incorrect results.

If I were to have a survey question that said 'Do you prefer red meat or white meat' and I were a vegetarian, you'd get a completely wrong answer from me.

If I were to have a more stereotyped question 'Do you think white people smell bad or smell delicious' I'd be completely unable to accurately answer it because everyone is a special snowflake and totally different.

I am not exactly forcing sterotyping, I am giving other options that can be used instead, just no neutral option. As a social awareness project, I am trying to make the person who is taking the survey come to the conclusions and see them by making that decision.

This concerns me. What are the conclusions? If I'm reading this right you have a heavy bias towards a particular survey result and are trying to guide participants into a certain 'decision' rather than amalgamating impartial results from your availability sample. Am I correct in that assumption?

There are certain conclusions that I am biased to. That is why it is a social awareness project. I am trying to bring up the issues in a different fashion then just a post that will get ignored. Granted, I want to see the data and see different opinions, but I also want to make people aware of the issues.

Some of the questions included a bias, such as:

"Are the majority of toxic players male or female?"

This is because I don't know if players are male or female unless they tell me; otherwise I assume male. Since most toxic players don't state their gender I have to pick either male or female; not neither.

Well that is where your personal judgement comes into play. Do you usually sterotype someone as a D*** or a P****y. Masculine or feminine so its kind of has a underlying meaning

This was another concern I had. With the question asking what role I assume women play most, I was forced to stereotype into a specific category. I wasn't given the choice to say "whatever role they want to play" or something similar.

Its all the point is to see if someone had to classify into one group, what would you choose? Thats how I am working the survey and it prevents non conclusive data. I bet if it said male players the data would suggest an even spread across the board. As of now 63% of people say females play support. You didnt have to be tunneled into picking support, but people see that as the primary option instead of selecting other options.

You don't have a question asking what role people think men play the most. I'm guessing it would support your expectation, but you should still have it there as a comparison.

Had I actually submitted the survey I would have answered support for that question. Not because I just subconsciously shoehorn women into playing support, but because the women I play with all play support.

i understand thats a common thing to see. Plenty of the women I play with also play support. Its just making it so that people cannot be neutral with decisions because it can often be considered an easy way out if you dont want to pick

Neutrality is kind of part of any survey to avoid skewed results. As Krylhos said, the question 'do you prefer male or female champions?' is tough to answer. I tend to prefer female champions due to the fact that my favorite champion classification is Mage, and the majority of mages are female. It has nothing to do with their gender whatsoever, but my answer will probably reflect that.

Yes, I know that neutrality does limit skewing but certain questions are not of high importance. That is one of them and it is a thinker type of question that makes you feel uncomfortable. It is actually of no significance unless I see a pattern of people picking a gender and then having extremely similar answers.

^ This. My least favorite class is top laners, which are mostly male. I'd much rather play ADC, mid, or support. In general I'd rather just play someone that isn't a meat shield, and most meat shields are guys.

I can understand how you don't want neutrality to be an easy way out. But not all answers are neutral because of indecision. There's a difference between "Neutral" and "No opinion." Most of these questions I would be neutral; Not because I wan't to avoid the question, but because I truly am neutral. Like I said in another response: forcing me to take a non-neutral response is inaccurate.

I personally prefer the best champion for the job based on champ abilities, team comp and my own play style. Honestly, gender has never taken a place in my logic deduction of champion selection (although after this survey, I'll probably always second guess myself :P)

Well I was putting it as a girl who is not the standard body build ect. that riot uses. She is missing features that other female champions have that make their physical appearance sexually appealing. Not saying she cant be considered sexy, but in the perfect perceived image of a woman, she is lacking features.

I wanted to take your survey, but there were too many biased questions. There were at least two or three questions that I did not feel like comfortable answering because there were no answers that matched my own. I like playing characters that fit the situation and position I'm in, regardless of their gender/sexuality. Sure, I wish there was more manservice but I don't mind all the sexy lady art either.

In general for survey's I wouldn't have put so many questions. Some of these seem irrelevant but we are probably missing some context. Some of the questions as well seemed strange or forced. Some of the options need to be more open as (most likely) people in general won't be 100% on a lot of the questions presented. That being said however I answered the survey, good luck on your final!

Yeah the 100% thing is something I could have done different but it is more about the topic then the actual survey, And actually what you may think is forced is actually put there for a reason. In the statistics I can see what every anonymous person put and they could correlate to views on each question if they picked a certain one earlier.

I took the survey, though a couple of the questions are relatively strange. Some things are impossible to know or have bias, such as "Do these youtube videos make fun of women?". Like...the majority of them don't, but if jokes are being made about different social sub-populations I'm sure women would be included just like any other group.

All that it does is makes it easier for me and my partners pick apart the data easier. I only wrote a majority of the survey with the intent of easy data. The survey is also supposed to serve as a purpose, that is another reason why its just yes/no ect. The purpose is to also bring up the point to people that there are these issues but no one thinks about them.

If this is for a school project or something and I were your teacher I'd probably take points off if your survey was strongly biased (as yours is). I'm not sure what you are trying to do here, but if its a serious assignment where your report is to be taken seriously, I feel that your results will be compromised due to the biased nature of your questions.

It is a serious project and I know for a fact that it will not have points taken off. As I stated, one of the main objectives is to raise social awareness of issues dealing with feminism. The way I chose was a survey, the rest of my group is also doing reddit posts. One is currently talking to a riot employee on her opinion(I will not name who), and the other is helping analyze the data and the comments. The comments are just as important due to it showing that we got people to think about what we presented in the survey as the issues.

I was taking this but stopped. There are a lot of questions for which the answers didn't represent my opinion or questions that I didn't have an answer for:

Question 2: SR is not the only map. These roles don't apply if you play something other than SR.

Question 6: Needs a no preference option.

Question 7: These can all mean different things to different people.

Question 12: People don't advertise their gender so I don't know.

Question 13: Needs an unknown option.

Question 30: Needs an unknown option.

Question 33: Needs a no preference option.

Question 34: Why does the team need to be all female? Also needs a no opinion option.

Question 35: Needs a no preference option.

Thank you for taking the survey. Some of these questions are purposely set up this way to make people not take neutral position. There would be a fair share of neutral selections so it wouldn't supply me with data that is needed. Such as question 13, it forces you to pick what role a female plays. If i said a male, it would be even around for the positions or slightly deviated. But since it is female and there is no neutral option, people choose support.

But keep in mind that some people's neutral decision doesn't come out of indecision. I didn't come up to that question thinking "Well I've never thought about it, I guess I'll just choose support." I read that question already having an opinion of neutrality. Asking me to pick a side forces me to express an opinion that isn't accurate.

Yes and no, since I didnt give you a neutral option you had the choice of 5 positions. From there, it was all your choice on picking support. If i have only 2 options then it would of been skewed but since it was one of five, you could have picked any other role. That would not of skewed the data too much but it would have made the selections more equal. Having the opinion of neutrality is ok but my goal was to see what people would say if they cannot be neutral.

And before picking support I strongly considered picking every other role. Every female I play with or see chooses something different, but in my personal experience slightly more female players play support. So I chose support, not because of any stereotype I was forced into, but because that's what my experience has shown via a very small margin.

I'm assuming you'll be comparing the results of what female players actually chose as their favorite to what people expect it to be. Just be aware too that you can also not have a favorite role. So saying something is your favorite when you're forced to make a choice is just making that more inaccurate.

so unless you are submitting the survey results alone, as the sole experiment.... i dont understand how the answers found in the survey can be used as a valid information. You can force me to pick an answer i might not agree with but that doesnt necessarily mean i am even informed enough to answer the question properly. The internet is full of anonymity. You could be male or female, we will never know. This si the same reason i cant answer properly on the behalf of female gamers. I have no proper knowledge. I believe you are misleading yourself and would advise you take another approach and not use these results in your presented data.

This is not all about data. Its just an approach instead of making a post that will be tucked away and never seen. As I said in other comments that it is not all about the results of the survey alone but also comments. As for my gender, if you would like to know, I am male and 22 years of age. I am using certain question for results but the other questions are meant to bring social awareness about sterotypes and female gamers ect.
