And there's also the problem that the "Best" ordering supports irrelavent and outdated posts, although that's getting better with the increased traffic.

A lot of people will probably agree with you here, and that's perfectly valid. I myself do not use the "Hot" ordering often, if at all. But say every single forum goer switched over here this very second, by the time I finished typing this comment this would be buried behind the front page of the sub-community. It might not be the best way to do things, but it does have a use.
