Honestly, Moderators aren't supposed to be garbage men, they are supposed to ensure that the forums stay on track, discard junk, and ensure the forums don't get too hostile.
For internet forums, this translates to moving threads to the appropriate subforum (or in this case subcommunity), deleting spam, and ensuring that uncivil discussion ceases. If the whole forum is hostile, they need to get an admin or someone with authority to calm the masses, should they prove incapable.
The fact that the above does not happen in any capacity on the current forums plays a large part in why GD is where every thing happens, and OT is a trashcan. Real forums usually have a trash forum to move closed threads to, so as not to pollute Off Topic. Other forums I have visited make this work with visible rules, that are visibly enforced by visible mods. This does a couple things:
- Encourages Responsible Posting - If people see that the rules will be enforced, and can easily find said rules, they are more likely to follow them. This is why you tend to have forum policy perma stickied.
- Prevents Misuse of Power - It's no secret that the mods on GD misuse their power and ban out what they don't want to see. Capt. Marv. is a fine example, as who gets a perma on a first offense? Especially when Reds do similar without any remorse. By having moderators make their actions visible, they are not only discouraged from misusing their power, they are more easily called upon when they are needed.
This doesn't mean they can't interact with the community outside of their duties, but rather encourages it. People are more lenient with people they converse with than automatons just doing their job.
