Making the full transition to Boards

TL;DR: We’re permanently moving to the boards on October 6 and the original forums will be converted to read-only and archived indefinitely with the same index of content as you’re used to.

For many of you, that’s huge news and a big change. We understand. But we've also been working for over a year now to solve the problems plaguing the classic forums and we’re long past the point where having two different official forum platforms makes sense.

We've shared most of the reasons why we have to change before, but instead of sending you all over the internet to find those posts, let’s summarize:

  • The classic forum technology limits our efforts to make any changes at all, let alone improve the community experience
  • The classic forum doesn't scale well and the League community grew faster than anyone expected
  • As there isn't a feedback loop within the classic forums to explain moderation actions, moderation continued to become more challenging
  • There are a number of security issues with the classic forums, and we aren't comfortable compromising when it comes to security
  • Nested view and community-driven sorting provides content that's more relevant to you and makes it easier to discuss the things you care about

Building the boards has been a long journey (more than a year and counting of constant feedback loops and iteration alongside the community), and it doesn’t end when we turn the classic forums to read-only.

Because you are League of Legends. If you're on the forums, you're just like we were before we started working here. You care enough to tell stories, share your favorites, and shout when something isn't right. And we need to keep hearing your voice.

Moving the party from the classic forums to the boards doesn't mean the music fades out or the age-appropriate beverages stop flowing. We might lose a few in the transition, and that sucks. We're hoping we'll be loud enough in the new place that they'll find their way.

This change has been more than a year in the making, and we've put it off over and over again because it wasn't the perfect time. But at some point, we had to realize there wasn't ever going to be the perfect time because the boards aren't a product we're shipping and never changing again. They don't come in a box. The platform isn't what matters, the community is. And while we might be moving the forums, they won’t be anything if you aren't right there, too. We're asking you to move with us.

Thank you, The Boards Team

I suggest that you check out this thread before you start posting:

#Boards Formatting 101

It's really informative and is well worth the read if you're new to boards. Here is a quick rundown of content to post in each board:

  • Memes & Games is pretty straightforward, jokes/memes go here.

  • Boards Feedback is to give feedback on Boards' features, not client related.

  • Esports is anything to do with Esports, whether videos, links, or discussions.

  • Miscellaneous is literally whatever doesn't fit anywhere else.

  • Announcements you can't post in (lol), but feel free to join discussions listed in Announcements.

  • Maps & Modes is for stuff like new SR feedback, dominion ideas, or any other map specific feedback.

  • Gameplay & Balance is where QQ threads go (for real though they will get downvoted, make quality and well thought out arguments), or just general live balance discussion.

  • Skins & Champion Concepts (Represent!) Pretty straightforward, put your skin concepts or your elegantly crafted champion concepts here (I will read yours!

  • Story and Art is all about the lore and in-game assets like splash arts and models.

  • Report a Bug is where you report bugs. Be sure to follow the guidelines listed here: How to Report a Bug

  • General Discussion is GD.

  • Help and Support is where you post all the unfortunate bug/lag/crash/bugsplat encounters, and they'll be attended. I also suggest you send in a ticket if you have a problem. https://support.leagueoflegends.com/home

  • ** Red Tracker** shows all Riot posts!

If you want further information, check out the culture and etiquette of each board (listed below the list of boards)

I want to (un)formally welcome you to the boards, please ask questions, we will be happy to answer them! I hope you will all adjust well!

I see Esports at the top and GD at the bottom with a name that was intentionally chosen so people wouldn't click on it, and the up/downvotes removed so people have no incentive to post something amazing.

Sorry, but that's not our forum. That's your forum. Imo.

Could you have made this any uglier? This is an eyesore

I know you might think you did good by all of us, because of the pros. But life's not all pros and cons. For 12 or 13 people, you have completely separated us. My ONLY friends are now gone. I'm not just overreacting. I can say assuredly that my friends on a specific sub-forum who never broke rules are gone. And the sub-forum itself never broke any rules.

So when you say all those pros, make sure you know that you're referring to General Discussion, and not Off-topic.

You'll really have to pardon my saying it, but this sounds an awful lot like "We know you won't like this change, but we know best, so you'll just have to accept it."

Oh well. RIP, GD.

Mhmm... I was thinking on writing a "Welcome" post for October 6th, but I think you're already taking care of it right? Besides Flintfall's comment is basically everything I was gonna say.

Question, why no "CLAN & TEAM RECRUITMENT" forums?

Cameron Woof10/4/2014, 7:00:31 AM1 votes

As a quickie, could you rename the "GD" board to "General Discussion"? It's weirding me out that it's been shortened to GD for no real reason.

Reddit anyone?

lol, no.

I'm a fan of the new boards. Please note that you can order posts in chronological order if you want to (just like the old boards). I personally like to switch sorting views to toggle between what's popular/hot and what's new.

However, I asked this before and got a response, but I still think it's ambiguous:

"What board would I post suggestions or ideas for out-of-game features like improvements to team builder, new end game statistics, GUI additions, etc? If >there isn't one already, do you think we should have one?"

This could be extended to in game features that are not related to gameplay or balance, like the death summary, or in-game menus, the shop, etc.

Here is the response from Affordance, and why I don't think this is clear enough to most people:

Hey Drogeist, appreciate the question. Sounds like this would best fit into the 'Gameplay & Balance' board. The rationale being this board is for everything that is related to playing the game including how you get into the game, the client etc.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

While technically these issues are related to "playing the game," it's kind of hard to find something that isn't in some way related to playing the game. I think two easily implemented things should be considered:

  1. Add these kinds of topics, explicitly, to the description of the gameplay and balance board. or
  2. Make a sub-board that's related to these types of conversations.

Thanks!
