yes but they wouldactually be building for the role

example leona would build a trinity and titanic hydra then tank

ali is full ap

karma is ap tanky

lulu is AS crit ad built

shaco has on use items galor instead of a more assassin build (i actually support shaco and usually go for tanky support build with max CDR for box CC, and it does work when played right)
