Do we consider "typing too much" to be punishable?

I've seen a few posts recently involving players' logs where comments like "You talk too much" is a critique of one's logs. I was wondering if ya'll report this in game, or if you even find it punishable.

I don't think that alone is punishable, because you can use chat constructively, and do it a lot. That shouldn't be punishable, right?

On the other hand, if you're chatting a lot, that means you've hit enter, typed, then hit enter again before doing another action, and when it accumulates, that either means you're dead a lot, or you're not cs'ing or using abilities as frequently as a player that doesn't chat that much.

Let me know what you think.

Edit: So yeah, I didn't think "talking too much" should be punishable. I don't feel like this comment should be our first or only critique when talking about chat logs, as it frankly isn't the main reason someone is punished.

In short, when we're trying to help out other players, don't just write "You talk too much." However, I think it is a good suggestion when you're talking about reform.

Talking by itself is not punishable, even if, as Jo0o jokes, you're ghost-writing for GRRM.

However, note that the system as a whole works off of both severity as an offense and frequency as an offense. For people choosing to report, it works the same way. I'll report someone who threatens to kill my family a single time, but not someone who makes a vaguely negative comment once or twice. I will, however, report someone who makes a vaguely negative comment 100+ times. There might not be a single line or set of lines that can be easily identified as a cause for punishment. But taken as a whole, there are a ludicrous number of lines of chat made by a player. Most of them are not helpful, and some of them are probably passive-aggressive. At a certain point, you just want them to stop talking.

I think it depends on the tone and intent of what is being said. Most of the time when "you talk too much" is used, the OP is haranguing someone without being directly offensive or insulting.

Only if they chat foul things

It's secondary, but relevant.

We're all human, we can't be sunshine and rainbows all the time. Folks are gonna be negative sometimes, and the system allows for a bit of it. But if you combine normal negativity with the bizarre desire to ghost-write for George RR Martin in the middle of a damn game of League, you're invariably gonna cross that line and get punished for it. That's just math.

I had a really shitty Lee the other day on my team, and at a couple points in the ~40 minute match, I said stuff like "We can't win fights if you don't sack up and get in there, Lee" and "Free ganks forever bot lane if you feel like winning this game, Lee". Not the most polite communication, but not enough to get me punished. However, multiply that amount of negativity by the fucking term papers some people are submitting per game, and you'll see why these folks are getting punished.

And the IFS system aside, sometimes we see logs that are so ridiculously long that we can't help but wonder how the player is actually playing the game. I don't carer if you're rocking 250wpm, to type that much they'd need to be either dead 50% of the time or ignoring minion waves.

Unless it's specifically toxic, I don't think writing a lot should ever be a punishable offense. If it gets to be annoying (I'm not considering literal spamming here, such as many of the same character in a row, etc.), you can always mute them, and they can communicate with pings. It just doesn't make sense to punish someone for trying to be social.

Even taking into account the fact that typing a lot could be effecting their game play, as long as they keep trying, and they aren't being toxic / breaking the Summoner's Code, it sounds perfectly acceptable to me.

I've also seen quite a few people use that line as a critique towards other players, but the massive amount of talking isn't the thing that gets them in trouble, it's the toxicity. I feel like people use it as a critique to imply that they should talk less. Less talking = less chance for toxicity.

Typing too much isn't a problem if you're not being a dick to someone.

Now if you type up the Declaration of Independence with just insults and toxicity during the whole game...

Yes, please. Shut up, and be reported.

This board certainly seems to think so, which is pretty silly without knowing any context of the game.

I'm gonna quote myself from another thread :

Talking too much isn't considered toxic, as long as you're not mean to others and you don't get reported for it, it isn't toxic. But you need to understand that if you get reported for talking too much, it means that someone else in the game did found your behavior negative.

For example, when two people in my team get into a fight via chat, often times they are so into it that they back into turret range or stay 15s in base just to type their messages, they nearly always miss cs, and more often than not it ends by one of them getting tilted, going afk, inting or beginning to throw away the game because of that ( seriously, just like kids, they are angry because of something someone else said, and they'll react like that ). If it ends that way, i'm for sure gonna report both of them, i don't care who started it or anything. But if them arguing overall does not impact my experience of the game, i won't report them.

They could have used the time they were using to argue to go ward, watch their minimap to get a better idea of the macro, look at the enemies itemization in detail, focus on csing, go steal an enemy jungle camp(really impactfull now), take scuttle, roam and try to help your team by ganking another lane, ... there is ALWAYS a better thing to do that can help leading to victory than typing something in the chat. The game isn't about arguing in chat. ^That is usually what is bothering me ( and a lot of people ) when i see two people arguing with each other. I don't care what they are debating on, i just want them to focus on playing the game. If they wanna debate/argue, they can chat after the game via the friends system, or go to the forums/teamspeack/whatever, to debate like we are doing in this conversation.

Now if you are having a long nice chat without being mean to anyone, there is no reason you would be punished, even if people report you for it.

TBH I usually report on average 3 people every game for inting. So yea if someone typed a lot I'd probably report them for annoying me

YerroFever1/2/2018, 7:54:24 PM1 votes

Chatting too much isn't itself punishable.

Too many minor passive aggressive comments, too many minor insults, too many mini flames, etc... that's what really gets punished.

I've had random games where I'm chatting a lot and typing out role play stuff with my team and the enemy team and I haven't gotten any punishments for those games with lots and lots of chat.

Except when he dies while chatting.

I can not for the life of me type fast, lol. So, in my case if I just myself typed as much as some do it in a way would be a justified report. I would not be focusing on the game therefore throwing it on purpose to type/ talk instead.

My roommate on the other hand can type a lot quick, even then when I show her some of the logs that get punished ( she never comes here ) when she reads some of them she says right off ' they talk to much '

It a selective thing isn't it ? Roommate and I have talked about this before and neither of us would report for Only that reason. Yet, I know that I have said to the empty room, " will you shut up and just play already " again though I can only remember being annoyed by it when they are being jerks all game, and playing bad.

I'm not sure, so I hold off on voting to hear other opinions. I'm thinking 'sometimes' right now. But I have an open mind about it.

This should be interesting, thanks for the thread. I hope it stays civil :)

Typing too much is just an excuse people on here use to poke holes in chat logs. Everybody has a different proficiency for typing and its impossible to determine the amount of impact it has on an individual's game-play. It also can't be considered distracting because there is a mute feature and the actual text box is such a small portion of the screen. Honestly, its just an annoying comment that I get sick of reading every time I open a new ban thread.
