Permanently banned for no reason

Chaosshinigami·11/6/2018, 5:28:08 AM·9 votes·4,436 views

Apparently I got banned for scripting and I have no idea why. I don't even know what that means. Did someone just decide to report me because they were mad at me or something. Can I take legal action? Normally I wouldn't care but I actually spent money on this game and have A LOT unlocked and for them to take it away for no reason is absolutely absurd. And I found this out after months of not playing. Did they just decide to ban me because I wasn't playing? There is seriously something wrong here and I am very aggravated.

I have heard of players getting this sort of ban who actually hadn't used anything listed as being against the terms of service (like recording software) or that inadvertently affect the system in some way. Just demand they play you 1 v 1 to show off your mastery!

Can I take legal action?

I wouldn't try it. All it's going to accomplish is to make support completely non-cooperative with you. Legally, Riot owns the account, not you.

As far as figuring out what happened, did you play those 5 games in your match history in October? You said you didn't play for months. What it appears to me is that someone compromised your account and played several games running scripts. If that's the case, you unfortunately aren't getting your account back, as Riot considers you responsible for everything done on your account, regardless of who is accessing it.

You can't take legal action. You are essentially paying a lease to use things on Riot's server and the terms of service would be like the signed paperwork for the lease agreement. Once you break the terms of service (or lease in this analogy) you forfeit any right to what you are being leased.

You should submit a ticket.

Reports might play a factor, but such bans are only actually made if Riot detects there's something amiss themselves. Contact Support, it has happened where something benign triggered their detection system. Don't be surprised if they don't give you evidence regardless of their decision after that though. They hide as much information about their detection methods as possible so that it's harder for people to program counter-measures.

Can take I take legal action?

You can try, but I would recommend against it as I believe it would be like handing money to lawyers just so you can learn the same thing you would have learned reading the ToS.

I don't even know what that means.

It means someone on your account was using a program to cheat.

Did someone just decide to report me because they were mad at me or something.

Nope. It has nothing to do with people reporting you.

Can I take legal action?

I wouldn't bet money on it going well, but you're always free to talk to a lawyer.

for them to take it away for no reason is absolutely absurd.

It's not for no reason, it's because someone on your account was cheating.

And I found this out after months of not playing.

It's possible someone else was playing on your account during those months. Contact player support.

Did they just decide to ban me because I wasn't playing?

Definitely not.

Sorry to hear that. Please submit a ticket at https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us

Let us know what happens :)

Hopefully you are not accused of account sharing or scripts. Riot should not be so quick to ban valuable accounts like that.

If you purchased the account or gave someone else access, that's why. Also, if you used a script or bots, that's why. Lastly, if you edited the game files in a way that doesn't violate the tos, that could be why.

Well you said you haven't played in months but there were games played in that span. Looks like someone got into your account and probably used them

Honestly now that I think about it this is aggravating me more. Just changed my password and it required me to use an email verification and the "you have to use this many characters with meta characters etc"... Why? If you're going to blame me for someone picking the lock to my house and stealing from me (analogy) why even have me waste the time using that specific lock. I guess I will wait for the response to my ticket. But this system makes zero sense if i get permanently banned. I should be able to put whatever password I choose in that case. Limiting the password you can make seems like it would reduce the amount of guesses someone would have to make anyway right? I only play from 2 locations. Why can't I make those locations my password? ( --catchup-from previous response and looking at my play history it seems like someone got into my account somehow. How I don't know because I only use the password for this account here and would never share it with anyone. Which I just changed.)

Chances are you were suspended for scripting because... well, you were.

No player behaviour system is perfect, granted - but generally a game like League has anti-cheat software that caught you.

Bans and punishments are usually carried out with some form of attached evidence or justification. So saying 'no reason' isn't a very solid ground for appeal.

G0blinSlay3r11/6/2018, 9:34:04 PM1 votes

Riot will find a reason.

H4NS11/9/2018, 7:15:02 PM1 votes

reminder that you don't actually own your account or any content you've purchased on it. Riot could ban you for having the letter X in your name, take your account, and there's nothing that you can do because you do not own anything.

So I would like to say I was not banned for no reason. Someone somehow managed to get into my account. After some rigorous vetting I was able to get my account back. I just want to say at least for me riot was very fair as getting banned for being hacked would be absurd but I understand they needed to make sure that was the case. Thanks for all your responses (except the "you got caught hacking comments" because I made it very clear that wasn't the case. I would like to shout out Vreivai for pointing out there were games in October that I did not know about that was actually a hacker. You the bomb. Have a good one guys! And obviously bringing up legal stuff on a league of legends forum was a mistake lol.

Chaosshinigami11/6/2018, 5:45:52 AM1 votes

I did submit a ticket but I wanted to play now :(. And I've never been banned from any game before. Seems more like the principal of it. I find it hard to believe the Tos would allow Riot to take money from you only to prevent you from using their service for NO REASON. And I really mean NO REASON. I should not be banned PERIOD. Thank you for all the responses so far. You guys are awesome.

Also, terms of service =/= a binding contract, just like things that say things like "we will no be held responsible for things that happen to you or your property" but then things happen and they get taken to small claims and the plaintiff wins because Saying its not your fault or responsibility or that you can't be held liable doesn't mean any of that is true.
