When most of the "disgust" towards gay people are rooted in the idea that they think acknowledging gay people is gonna make everybody and all future children gay, or that acknowledging gay people will make human race go extinct, or that whatever random nonsense logic or blatant incorrect claim have you to try and justify this sense of disgust... then yes, it's what can be called as an irrational fear.

Gay behaviours are observed not only in humans, but across a wide range of animals. And while technically, most things has not a purpose (not in the vastness of the world where most things are decided almost by RNG, or by a god/gods who are beyond random, doesn't matter); but if we really have to draw what gays' role are in the survival of a race, it does exist, because they're there to take and raise orphans instead of leaving them to their fate in favour of their own biological children or worse, killing the orphans off to reduce competition. This is the same for gay humans, and it's also the same for gay wild animals. Your claim there is therefore, incorrect and perhaps irrational.
Ignorance is not rational, and blanket rejection based on that irrational ignorance is the definitive example of an irrational fear. There you go.
