Suggestion: make this game pay to play

Horrible, horrible idea. This game is popular precisely because of its low requirement. I wouldn't be here to begin with if this game wasn't free. If you're going to charge money then why make the game free to begin with? New players will feel unfair since old players didn't have to pay. I shouldn't have to pay for something that is supposed to be free. I can go on about how obnoxious this is and if I ever see anyone suggesting it again I would copy the above and paste in their face.

Given all that, I find myself unwillingly admitting that we might want to consider extreme measures if we really want to see a change in this community.

Are you suffering from a :

  • troll?
  • feeder?
  • harasser (toxicity, flaming, verbal abuse, ping abuse, stalking, etc)?
  • teammate constantly going afk?
  • teammate that is actually a bot?
  • hacker?

We've seen and been with plenty of them. They have various reasons for their commitment and dealing with them case by case is just unrealistic, if they can even be dealt with. Even then, even if they have reasons to, you'd think they would refrain from doing so because of the consequences, yet they wouldn't. Why?

Because they don't care. Because there's no deterrent.

Capital punishment exists not because government likes gory stuff. It exists to scare people, to make them hesitate before they step over the line because something terrible can happen to them. Riot's punishment serves as warning to give players chances to come to their senses, and only when things escalate too far will they ban. However, do those who are aware, those who are warned, and those who have been suspended care about being banned? Not at all. It fails to serve as much of a deterrent as capital punishment would. Why though?

Because there's no significant consequence to speak of. They are confident they won't get caught. When they do they'll just get a warning. If they're banned for overcommitment they'll make new accounts, and we can't stop that.

This leads me to thinking: if these players value their accounts, if account actually holds value to them and doesn't come by easy, wouldn't that make ban more meaningful? If you risk losing an account you paid for, and you have to pay to play again, wouldn't you think twice before you demonstrate your profession in hate speech? If you realize you have to pay for all these accounts you plan to bot with, and you can't just generate bot accounts for free to replace the ones that were caught, wouldn't you figure it's not worth it and stop?

It doesn't have to be pricey. Maybe something like 5$ to create an account, and to make it fair for new players since old players didn't pay, grant them RP equivalent to the paid amount. While the game isn't free anymore, it's as close to being free as it can while increasing the value of the account. I doubt Riot would consider this idea, though, as it goes against their fundamental, so I'm just throwing it out and see what people think.

Pros:

  • potential to clean the community and provide better gaming experience

Cons:

  • tremendous loss in player base (some only play free games, teens can't pay, not everyone trusts online transaction, the banned will quit, etc)
  • negative impression of Riot company (collecting $ after their game becomes famous).
  • punished players more difficult to deal with because they become less likely to accept their fault when valuable account is at stake.

Help me out and add more to the list.

This discussion should probably be put on hold until we see how Overwatch releases; that will teach us a lot about what could happen.

Not all Pay to Play games have amazing communities. I've heard that WoW has a few servers with players worse then here and I've seen a few extremely rude players, worse then here, on RIFT back when it was still Pay to Play.

Add to the fact there's probably 100's of people who can't afford to pay a monthly fee. I had stopped playing RIFT because my parents could no longer afford the 30 bucks bi-monthly for me.

If League went Pay to Play then Riot will be losing most of their community. Also, I believe when League first came out it had to be bought and I had read somewhere a LONG time ago it was, at that time, Pay to Play. But I wasn't aware of League up until 3 years ago around Jinx's release so I can't really verify the truth towards that.
