Why are people so toxic?

Toxicate13·4/19/2017, 2:42:14 AM·21 votes·28,907 views

Hey guys, I just wanted to take a moment to rant about people.

So I am currently Silver I, but I was placed in Bronze IV this season (first placement matches ever, don't judge me please). Anyways, it seems like every game I do, people are just complete assholes. When one thing goes wrong, everyone points fingers at one person. I've seen it a lot in 4 man premade queues when I'm playing Solo Queue. It's so annoying. If I do one thing wrong, my entire team flames and reports me, even if I don't say anything. And keep in mind, this has been happening to me since BRONZE FUCKING 4. To anyone who is reading this that is higher elo, is it the same in Gold+? Is it worth it for me to keep climbing if all I'm going to do is encounter these toxic, feeding, trolls? Please let me know, because I'm debating whether or not I want to waste time climbing when I'm just going to be flamed. And by the way, Riot's report system isn't doing shit for me. I have been called many really bad things, whether it be general pejoratives or racial slurs. And this happens all game. I don't mute people because I need to actually communicate with my team, but ignoring it isn't very easy when they're spamming shit in chat because they macroed it to their keyboard. Anyways, thanks for reading my wall of text.

because a good amount of players are used to companies not caring about toxicity in chats, so when riot wont allow that its really hard for them to not be toxic

just pick your battles, words are words and you can choose what words mean to you, just ignore them or mute them.

Combination of the ridiculously low standards of what is considered "toxic" these days and basic human nature.

It gets worse all the way up, because people are trash, take themselves too seriously, and are pissed off over the reset and balance issues. Ranked is not remotely worth playing, unless you need that victorious skin so badly.

A lot of the time you can find yourself playing a game and you're doing well, and your bot adc for instance is dying left and right. Not to ganks, just dying over and over again and you think: "ah well, it's fine; going to do my best to try and win." So there you are carrying early to mid game keeping your team in the game best you can as say the jungler for example.

Late game comes and you make ONE mistake and suddenly that adc from before just starts laying into you out of everyone else. You think: "I could have said so many things to that guy about 20 times before, wtf is he serious?"

This process happens over and over and over. It can be easy to get fed up from time to time. I'm not justifying toxicity at all, some people are really infectious with it though. Best to play some tunes you enjoy and mute whomever tries to spray their toxic garbage all over your game.

It can be really diffusing to them when you don't react to their negativity and you go on communicating with the rest of your team. If you mute them they can still hear you. If they've proven to be toxic I'm willing to doubt they are going to have anything helpful to say.

I know this an old post, but just figured I'd give you an update in case you chose not to play. Instead of reading this post and trying to do anything about any toxic players. Riot has chosen to implement a emote system to help further the toxicity. sooo, hope you didn't waste to much time.

that just happened to me today, and i'm so pissed, i was playing adc and there was always 3 or 4 on botlane and there was 2 times where we were being ganked (again..) and our jungler just stood on drake not doing shit and as if nothing was happening on botlane he went for the enemy's jung.. result: we were always ganked and i ended up 1/10/12 because on late game i was straight focused by fizz and full cc making my whole team flame me and reporting me at the end. Note that i was not toxic; i didn't flame; and did not int; so unfair.. seriously.. how can i have fun on this game seriously...?

Have a bit of the same problem. My relationship with league is a little bit on/off due to the same problem. People are just way to toxic. I come back from a league break starts playing the game, but then after a week or so I can't look through the toxicity anymore and starts to hate playing. I've played since like season 1, but toxicity was not even nearly a big a problem for me as it is now. But people also seem to have become way more toxic, and it alrdy starts in champion select. It feeds me up and ruins the fun. I love to play league, but I feel like it's come to a point where its just not worth it anymore, because at the end of the day, we all just play to have fun and get a a break from daily stuff. However league is losing its appeal and its so annoying, because there is literally no reason to be so toxic, and you just ruin your own mood and everyone else mood, period...

It's because the game is frustrating as hell. Like a project that you build over a period of time, small mistakes accumulate to cause major consequences, and with it being a team game and all, people tend to get frustrated with the fact that they can't interfere, and basically what happens is that the inch of glass seperates you from the other player, basically to the point of objectification by champion. You don't ever see any reports asking to report a certain username, it's always the champion (except in one4all) that takes center stage. You wouldn't feel bad for screaming insults at a rock, or your pen, or that lamp in your room. However, try saying it to a stranger you just met. If you're fun, make jokes, or talk and connect with the people in your game, high chance is, they'll be nice and accepting of your mistakes, or at least won't tell you that you're a degenerate pile of severed bull penises covered in shit I have been called those exact same words. They don't see you as a person unless you are going out of your way to be one. Everyone's focused on the game way too much. Nevertheless, it is subjective to the person and their experience. You might be the nicest person in the world, but we all have a boiling point. Could be working your ass off, having time for one game and having it be ruined by a troll or a flamer. Or it could be facing an extremely irritating teemo zed darius champion. But there's always the bad apple in the mix, who can't see his own error and only focuses on your tiniest of mistakes, and the toxic sludge. These are probably younger gamers, with bad judgement and a hotheaded attitude. Either that or they're sociopaths, either way, tell them to calm down and ignore them, but if they're really bad just mute them.

Geners8/6/2018, 5:44:34 AM1 votes

Because people don't realize that it's Just a game. Like any other it's meant to be enjoyed for the experience. If you're playing non-ranked games it's especially pointless to be toxic. You're just trying to make someone else feel bad so you can feel better about yourself. No Acceptable at all.

Uhm Actually12/4/2018, 8:53:35 AM1 votes

Apparently riot has a 0 tolerance policy against flamers and toxic slurs. But whenever you report someone, no action takes place. So obviously riot's punishment system is screwed up. I've reported 20 people the passed 1/2 weeks, I've taken screenshots of them flaming and uploaded it with the reports. Yet they don't provide any feedback. So they are basically encouraging toxic behavior.

But no worries, Riot will soon realize when their player base drops -that it's not a joke.

SenoirMeow5/19/2019, 2:48:31 PM1 votes

Can confirm this is happening. Someone told me to kill myself because i chose Diana. Another team mate agreed and suggested I was better off dead. The person saying these things barely done any better than me in game and reported me because I didn't press "lock in" quick enough on champ select because i opened by bedroom window. He literally asked the whole team to report me. Obviously me saying "calm down its a game" didn't help the matter. It was my first ever ranked game haha.

Mathgodpi5/26/2019, 5:00:38 AM1 votes

It's due to a buildup of frustration from losing a number of games. We all experience frustration, but different people have different ways of handling it.

Jonesybones5/26/2019, 5:02:38 AM1 votes

It going to take effort and time to turn this community around. Report anyone you see in game that is toxic. And don't be toxic back. just mute/all

Magical Poop7/18/2019, 4:26:11 PM1 votes

becouse they have no influence what you do and they're triggering becouse they think that one mistake can lead to lose

Swixtie1/5/2020, 5:18:01 PM1 votes

People are so toxic because of the way the game works. Especially in lower elos, below plat I mean, people just don't understand basic macro and don't understand snowball system of league. As if for instance you have Jax who plays vs Fiora and fiora gets 1 or 2 kills. In lower elos instead of giving up farm and keeping the tower alive this Jax will just feed harder and harder and lead to a situation in which you play 4 vs 6 because Jax is 3 levels behind Fiora. This is the most apparent reason why people especially in lower elo flame so hard because other players might even unconsciously ruin their game singlehandedly. I know it's a team game but it's not a game like R6 Siege or Counter Strike where rounds last for 3 to 4 minutes and every round you more or less have equal chances of winning. In league the game usually snowballs out of control in addition to existence of super hard carry champions like Yasuo, Master Yi or Kassadin which are best picks for smurfs because are the easiest to 1 vs 9 them the game.

Another very triggering thing is the amount of AFKs in low elo. When I was in Gold 2 I remember that I had a match where I was playing Fiora vs Gnar and my jungle and mid went simultaneously afk in 4 min of the game. We lost in 21 mins and I lost -25 lp because of that and even though everybody reported them, nothing happened they didn't get banned or anything. They received the same penalty as the people that actually played the game 3 vs 5 and lost.

I get it that Riot can't just be permissive of not giving a penalty in lp when you lose a game but I personally believe that there is a huge amount of players who are just really good at the game and have their skill much higher than their elo suggests but because of the certain issues that Riot ranked system has they are hardstuck and as the time goes they become really frustrated and start flaming and may become oversensitive to other players feeding, not smiting well or just over that they play vs smurfs.

Not to mention the fact that even though you might go 0/10 and be completely useless in a match you may still be promoted to higher tier because of luck that your team is carrying you or just that you duo with a Grandmaster tier friend who boosts you while playing in duo.

Another thing are winning streaks that can get you in 30 matches from Silver to Diamond. This is a big bullshit because nobody is that good that they win every match even though they might just crush their opponents in lane or gank extremely well cause how you gank when your 3 lanes are 0/5.

It's nearly impossible to make a perfect match making and ranked system but there are so many evident error in Riot's that it's no surprise that people that want to climb as the time goes on become tilted and start flaming, trolling, afking etc.

In my opinion competitive scene in LoL is really healthy and developing but the balance in the game and just the attitude of people makes the game in the longer run unenjoyable, stressful and tilting. Especially if your favourite champion doesn't get skin in 4 years and Yasuo, Zed and Lux get one every month or when you main Aurelion Sol that just gets destroyed by the rework comparing to newly reworked diana which is completely broken and in high elo has permabanned status.

Let's not bump old threads as doing so is necromancy which violates the Board Universal Rules. I'm going to lock this thread down now.

Probably because EVERYONE has to deal with that, not just you, and the more you deal with it the less you're able to tolerate. When you're doing your best trying to climb, overcoming the nonsense of low elo, then someone makes an obvious error, a novice mistake, it reeeeally irks you when you've done everything you could to secure a win.

A similar situation would be that people put so much practice and effort into learning how to play with the greatest skill level, only to be held back by those who didn't put in as much effort as them.

Basically, it's team game nonsense. The problem with team games is individual effort does not matter if everyone else doesn't apply the same amount, and that too frustrates people. Personally, I've yet to see someone be toxic for the sole sake of toxicity. It's always "I told you" or "I'm tired of this elo" or "You should've done this". Sad, but understandable.

People who play LOL are the same people you see every day - they are neither more nor less "toxic" than anybody else. The reasons they react in a toxic way while playing LOL are quite simple:

(a) you get stuck with trolls / feeders on your team, who don't take the match as serious as you do, and they ruin your team's chances...

(b) you get boosters / smurfs on the enemy team, who are simply that much better than you are, that they ruin your team's chances of winning

(c) there is NOTHING you can do about either. You are stuck, for at least 20 minutes, with (a) or (b) - you cannot leave (Riot bans your account), you cannot complain (Riot bans your account), you cannot punch them in the face (obviously... it's an online game) - all things you could EASILY do in a football / basketball / any other team sports court where you are physically present.

Simple. Has nothing to do with the people who play LOL, only with the system around it. Solutions are ALSO quite simple, however, they will make the game less addictive (i.e. "less money"), so they are not implemented.

CrumblingAway9/23/2017, 5:01:52 PM1 votes

This is a competitive game, people are going to be pissed at you when you make mistakes. Grow a thick skin and play better. I am a Plat 5 support main and I rarely get flamed because I rarely make mistakes (ADC don't count, they are all babies).

Edit: from the comments below, I'd like to add something: I flame, not a lot, not a little, but I definitely do, I just don't cross certain line like tellying someone to kill themselves. Basically I just don't veer off point, the flame is always aimed at their repeated mistakes. Giving FB is not flameworthy, fighting your fed counterpart when you're 2 levels and an item behind after you've already given him 3 kills? Yes, you're gonna hear about it, and you're gonna deserve it too, whether or not you take it to heart is entirely up to you.

WinterGhost1009/26/2017, 4:09:08 AM1 votes

This is my opinion and not fact please do not hate on me. People become toxic when something in their life is going downhill. For an example will be losing around 2 - 3 games in a row. The player loses hope thinking that they will win the next game but something goes wrong like the JG ganking under the tower and dying. This cause the layer to be a little mad and see something about it, which in turn causes the JG to talk back and so on. This does not always happen but its what I believe causes a lot of the verbal abuse in the game.

CodyBear 1/24/2018, 10:33:15 PM1 votes

Poor match making system. There is no fun in being at a losing streak because of poor teams. Afkers and trolls who grief other players are not punished enough. I guess it’s Riots way to make people play often by being frustrated in climbing the ranked ladder. People are driven to become toxic because of this. They need to fix their Match making system.

TheClicker2/23/2018, 1:23:48 PM1 votes

I have had two games now where bot lane was 0.9.3 / 0.6.0 and 0.7.2 / 0.8.1 not a single kill between them in each game. Yet they blame jungle or mid in their team or someone else not realising thats its THEM that needs improving. But no... they blame others and become toxic. And if you defend the person they blame they start to be toxic towards you as well. No logic.
