Banned for explaining a situation

Below is a script of my previous game where I was banned because I was explaining why its not a good idea to ban people for what they say. Keep in mind, I was being called a %%% and cursed at the entire time. This banning system needs to go. For someone who puts money into this game, I should be able to say what I want when I want to. Also I don't see the purpose of having the option of 'turn off chat filter' if you're just gonna ban people who curse anyway. If people don't like it, THEN MUTE ME!! THAT'S WHAT IT'S FOR.

Why the hell would you try to establish societal commentary on an inflammatory subject in the middle of a fucking League match? And then, despite acknowledging that you know that hate speech is bannable in League, you repeated it? Twice?

Use of hate speech aside, I wouldn't want somebody like you using a League match to try to share your world views. I just want to focus on the game, not engage in complex political debate and try to achieve a deepened understanding of why some words hold power, or whether they SHOULD hold that power. Just play the fucking game.

Words can be all sorts of things, including offensive. And you have a lot of offensive words in there...so ban deserved.

It wouldn't let me place the second blurb in a separate comment under our discussion within the comments of this post, so I'm making a separate discussion line just so it can be placed here. This was a similar situation of someone who was playing support with a shitty teammate who sparked arguments with them:

Quoted: another user

No, I can't accept that. If someone is doing something badly, you have to tell them otherwise they'll never learn i.e. playing with fire, guns, bullying, etc.

Being honest is not an excuse. If I wanted to blame them, I would say

"We're losing this game cause you took the ADC role without knowing how to play it. We're losing cause also don't know how to CS at this ELO meaning we're losing CS gold while the enemy team expands their gold advantage. We're losing cause you were probably ELO boosted."

This is what I did:

"I'm doing X because you're doing Y" with Y being "you're missing CS." There is a fundamental difference between what I did and what you're accusing me of having done. You're accusing me of blaming them for something that was within my control. I'm pointing out what I did was take responsibility for making sure my actions help win the game the best way I can even when someone else is intentionally throwing the game.

At not point was I ever making up an excuse. Merely explaining why my team attempting to report me was unjust simply because they didn't like the fact that I took CS as a Support when I had to in order to win given the level of skill or lack thereof that my team was displaying. In a way, I'm glad I defended myself otherwise I'd be perma banned without any record of me explaining why I did the actions that I did ingame which others in my team didn't agree with.

It's perfectly acceptable for you to tell people why they are doing badly, but the situations you're comparing to in real life have different context from league. Mainly, they are in-person when your interactions in league are through chat alone. Your tone can be heard when in-person, and so it is much less likely to be misinterpreted as your chat messages were. When you are unable to use tone of voice to give advice in a way that people will correctly interpret, you must instead use tricks of language in order to achieve that level of understanding with them.

The impact of your words goes beyond how you perceive them. You also have to take into consideration how they will be received.

Here's how the tenses affect rhetoric:

  1. Past tense - Credit: Usually interpreted as crediting outcomes to people, can be used for blame or praise. Here's a mock mathematical representation... (outcome) * (person) = credit If the outcome was negative then the credit being given is negative as well, thus it is considered "blame." Speaking in the past tense will lead people to think you are blaming them, for example: "You missed CS" will equate to, "you did bad thing, bad things followed, it is your fault."

  2. Present tense - Values: Often used for aligning points of view, can be used to express sympathy or re-frame a misunderstanding. Speaking in the present tense will lead people to think you are talking about values. For example, saying "you are missing CS." Will often be interpreted as, "You are not getting enough CS."

  3. Future tense - Decisions: Most suited to debating and setting goals, useful for influencing choices made in the future. Speaking in the future tense is the most effective way to get people to focus on a goal. For example: "You need to get more CS" will often be interpreted as, "You need to focus on farming more."

If you genuinely want your teammates to understand you and learn to not do something wrong, then you need to give your advice in the future tense instead of the past tense. "You missed CS," while accurate and certainly true, is not going to make the person think about getting more CS in the future - it is instead going to make them think you are blaming them for missing CS. This is human nature, and it is pretty common in the league community and many other high stress team environments.

Using the future tense is much more effective, because it will orient them on the goal, and draw their attention away from trying to attribute credit (both good or bad) for a past choice and its outcome. It helps even more if you suggest the method (more CS) in terms of a larger goal. For example, "If you try to farm safely and catch up on CS, you can buy the items needed to win fights with that opponent in the future."

That's it for advice, on to discussing justification of punishment.

You didn't just give advice and then stop. You repeatedly harped on Ashe for things such as missing CS or failing plays. One instance could potentially be understandable as feedback or a short outburst of frustration, but the more you repeat the negative statements multiple times then it just looks more and more like you're bullying them for being bad. "ashe messed up, there were 5 ppl there" is borderline, but then you went on to say, "calling it what it is, ashe is bad" and even "giving up on this adc" - That's not advice, that's just being a negative-nancy.

Even if you remove the repeating of others hate speach, your own antagonizing behavior is well deserving of a punishment. You made the game far more negative and contributed to a very toxic environment.

Enjoy your ban mate.

open a ticket you might get out of it. their ban program doesn't understand in what context you are using that word. it will ban anyone who says it no matter how they are using it.

There's a lot of side discussion going on because of the hate speech in the chat log but I don't think that is even why you got banned. It certainly may have contributed to getting the system to look at your case, but there's something else going on here that I think you're not aware of.

As has been established already, you came off of a 14-day ban within the past couple months. If you haven't shown enough improvement then your standing will remain on thin ice even many months after such a ban. And regardless of the severity of (or lack thereof) your latest transgression, ANY punishable behavior, no matter how small can result in being kicked up to the next level of punishment. If you happened to still have the standing of someone who is on the 14-day ban level, then the next level up is a permaban.

I personally don't think this is fair depending on the circumstances, because a player could get 14-day banned for hate speech and then be permabanned afterwards for something small like passive aggressiveness without receiving warning about passive aggressiveness. Your case is different even from this though because you also repeated hate speech. It wouldn't matter if you repeated hate speech or merely accused another player of trolling, it would have the same effect regardless.

Here's what I think likely got you banned, even if the repeating of hate speech did not.

  1. You called for people to gang up on and report another player. This is never necessary, one report is all it takes to get the system to review the player's behavior. And calling for other people to gang up on an individual like you did here can be considered harassment.

  2. You accused others of trolling. Riot does not tolerate this sort of thing because being called a troll when you are not trolling can be one of the most infuriating things for a player who is simply struggling to play well. Maybe it is obvious to you that the player is trolling, but if it is to you, then it will be to Riot as well. Calling it out in chat only feeds them the attention they crave and increases the likelihood that they will continue to harass you. You should have muted them instead.

  3. And on top of that you antagonized a player by threatening that they would be banned. Again, don't feed them attention. If they are actually a troll then you are just making things worse, and if they aren't a troll then you're bullying them and making them feel worse.
