can you get banned for saying nerd??

I don't work for Riot, but I have a pretty solid understanding of the punishment system.

You can indeed get banned for things like "nerd", although a single "nerd" here and there is unlikely to trigger anything.

In general there's a difference between insults and BMing: "nerd" and "quitter" fall more on the insult side of things, while "nice ult" and "thanks for dragon!" and "u ok?" are more on the BMing side of things. The main difference here is that the latter ones may be poking fun at your opponents, but they aren't insulting them or attributing often negative attributes to them.

The IFS doesn't care what words you use. There is no "bad words list" (aside from slurs and urging self harm).

What the IFS cares about is: arguments, insults, blaming, giving up, harassing, or spamming, all of which can be done with or without any specific set of words.

technically it is verbal abuse, but I wouldn't worry about it. calling someone a nerd is probably the least insulting insult a person in this game can come up with.
