If you're going to show chat logs without context, then why show them at all?

I literally just got chat banned for a game where I had 4 people in my game harassing me the entire time. Some of what I said was toxic, no doubt about it. But it was in response to each person in my team all of whom said infinitely more toxic stuff and in higher quantities. They also sat in base and waited for me to die 5v1 so they could spam ping my death. It was one of those games, then they (I assume) 4 man reported me and I am the one who is punished. There is a real value to context in a court of law, but not in the tribunal. People can flame, feed, spam, harass, and ping constantly and even go afk. None of it matter because the likelihood of anything besides verbal abuse being checked is extremely rare. And the victim can be punished as long as the rest of the team chooses to gang up on them.

This game should not promote this sort of bullying if it wants to punish real offenders of any sort of in-game crime. Over time I have noticed that the Riot Staff are significantly less interested in people who are actually ruining games, and more interested in people who are frustrated from having their games ruined. This logic follows with victim blaming since the person who is losing their time is clearly the victim, the person who is wasting time by trolling the game clearly has time to lose and does not care. But the definition of trolling is so ambiguous because there is not even a system in place to catch it. One would literally have to say "hello, i am intentionally feeding, or walking around in base, or refusing to group and farming top while they take our nexus" in order to be punished, and even then, multiple times.

The issue riot is having is reconciling which is more significant an offense, feeding, or someone saying "please stop feeding". The answer is obvious, but the methods implemented to punish players are the opposite. Chat logs intentionally show only the player who is being questioned which makes it even more of a problem because without context you are now even more likely to get chat restricted despite having committed relatively no wrong-doing. Where-as in game footage is scarce so the real perpetrators of serious offenses get off Scott free.

Too many times have I seen people intentionally feed kills, "run it down mid", and ignore their team and farm lanes while nexus is being taken, in gold/plat, where it is clear the player is not just terrible, and no punishment is implemented, they do so to get a rise out of their team. Even "pls stop feeding" to someone who is literally intentionally feeding, is enough to get a chat ban. Something needs to be fixed about this, otherwise your game will not be enjoyable for anyone who is an adult and does not have time to waste playing game after game with people who "don't care".

"what I said was toxic" all that matters

First of all the amount of reports is irrelevant if one person reports you or 9 it's all the same.

Second of all they're likely to be punished as much as you if they are toxic too depending on where they currently sit on the punishment ladder.

Third riot does punish those that do things in game to hurt the game for others it's just much harder and a much longer process because it's harder for it to be spotted.

Fourth while context may make your responses understandable it does not relive you of any wrong doing, you were still toxic doesn't matter why you still were that was your choice in actions instead of muting them then reporting them you chose to retaliate with toxic material so you got punished accordingly.

If one person punches a second person and starts a fight in a bar they both get kicked out, person b doesn't get to stay because persona a started it, it's the same way for riots punishment system.

Fifth just telling somebody "please atop feeding" is not something that will get you restricted you have to do more than that and anybody that claims that they were banned from that is either lying to protect themselves or mistaken, usually the please stop feeding is accompanied with a lot of insults or spammmed at them multiple yes resulting in harassment.

Riot does not show context nor do they care, because it does not matter what others do. Fighting fire with fire (or in League, fighting negative/toxic behavior with more negativity) is not permissible. You can certainly be punished for being toxic for any reason - "defending yourself" against toxicity is not an excuse.

If you are looking for legal terminology that is reflective of riot's stance on toxicity and punishment, its very simple:

  • There is no justified self-defense. You commit a crime you are punished. In league's case, using any form of language that is deemed inappropriate is a crime, no matter the circumstances.
  • Every murder is pre-meditated. Basically, there is no way for you to lose control and type something without meaning it. Therefore every offense is considered to have intent to hurt others or offend them. So, riot's stance is that if something is typed it always will have more negative weight than if it is said out loud.
  • Finally, there is no such thing as manslaughter. Riot considers every chat offense to be on purpose and will punish to the full extent of what the terminology used entails. Basically, there is no way for you to insult or offend someone without actually meaning to.

Yeah, I know it doesn't make any logical sense. But this is a video game, the punishment system doesn't really have to make sense. The system is designed to accomplish whatever riot really wants it to, not what they tell us. The only ones who actually know the purpose of the punishment system are the ones who created it and enforce it.

Did you mute them immediately?

^^^That is why you got chat banned ^^^

The reason they don't show chat logs with context is because It does not matter what anyone does or says in game .....

You are not to respond or react in any way shape or form

Here it is in the most simplest terms....

If someone intentionally feeds/ afk etc and you flame them for it

you deserve to be punishing just as much as they do.

If someone calls you every name in the book and makes up some new ones -- and you respond

you deserve to be punished just as much as they do.

If someone simply isn't answering your pings , chat or playing the way you think they should and you "call them out"

You deserve to be punished

It does not matter "why" you did it ...the fact is you did . That's the only think that matters in the above cases.

No matter what game mode your in certain things just are not allowed reacting to anything you dont like in game is one of the things not allowed,

In other words you ( according to Riots behavioral policy) have no right to

  • be verbally abusive/ verbally offesive
  • react or "defend yourself" against others being verbally abusive
  • chastise those legitimately breaking the rules
  • Chastise those who you don't agree with
  • complain about anything
  • Rant about any personal grievance in the game
  • giving any type of negative commentary regarding whats happening in the game

Doing any of the above can lead to various punishments including permaban's

So here is the lessons you should take from this on the mature and civilized way to handle things which will also ensure you are following Riots behavioral guidelines

So yes if someone is saying the most vile insults to you ever spoken,

the proper action according to Riot is mute and report without any response including " report x or i'm muting you"

If any amount of people are breaking every game play rule in the book

The proper action according to Riot is ignore them don't respond with anything -- even "report x"

yes you might lose a match and some lP if in ranked its still just a video game and not a serious life or death situation if you do.

and really---

Which is the best coarse of action if you don't want to be punished given Riots current policy?

1 Not reacting or responding in any way shape or form and losing a match and some Lp ...which really has no "real value" and can eventually be replaced

2 Reacting, "defending yourself", "sarcastic " responses, chastising rule breakers or simply just complaining about think you don't like in game and risking losing your entire account that does have monetary value?

The safest option is in other words if you cant say anything positive ..without being sarcastic about it .. don't say anything at all.

If you pick option 2 its inevitable that you will eventually end up perma banned

dude dont fret the report system in this game is a joke ... its a 0 tolerance policy so they can ban accounts ... i nevre in my life played a game were they ban accounts as much as this game ... i swear its run by liberal snowflakes ... like reallly?1 your gona focus all your efforts to trying to moderate trash talking in a online video game ... its laughable..they tell u, u can just mute everyone (so u can feel like a real nerd when u have no1 to talk to) ...... i found that having people in my disc chat makes it easier to deal with the pathetic fan base and stafff that comes with this game .... i suggest u try it ..

Seriously, disabled your enter key now. One punishment is enough. You really don't want yoru account permabanned for something that isn't your fault. Even normal human banter can be ban-worthy in the eyes of Riot. YOu aren't allowed to get upset in the chat, so it is better ot just never use it.
