Banned - Why does Riot only ban based on the amount of reports a player receives?

Just got banned based off this one game.

I understand I was rude in it and I should have muted the duo bot lane but wow I get banned for this? No chat ban? Just banned account? Is this game for children? I didn't even swear in this or use foul language. I called someone trash at the worst.

The duo bot lane rages all game and collectively reports me so I get banned.

I'm going to assume you have received prior punishments, such as a 25-game chat restriction or a 14-day ban?

If so, this behavior could definitely escalate you to a permanent ban. It's not based at all on the number of reports, but rather the behavior shown in games you are reported for. The sort of behavior I've clipped out here simply isn't sportsmanlike or acceptable.

So yes, Riot feels that repeated insulting behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct can earn you a permanent ban. Not because it's "a game for children" but because, simply, that sort of behavior isn't fun to play alongside.

Riot sees the full chat log, but for privacy reasons (and the fact that the punishment is about your behavior and context really doesn't matter) they don't show you anything but your own chat log.

If this is legitimately the only game on your chat logs and your only prior punishment is a 10 game chat restriction, it might be worth sending a ticket to player support. I don't see the usual triggers of hate speech or encouraging self-harm that would cause an immediate escalation of that many levels, so it's possible that either a game log failed to send to you or there's more to this situation. Player support will be able to help you determine exactly what's going on, and resolve it if appropriate.

That said, the behavior of other players in no way justifies or excuses your own. If their behavior is punishable then the appropriate actions will be taken based on their own standing within the behavioral system. You are not considered exempt from the rules of good behavior just because someone else was mistreating you first, or mistreating you worse.

Each player is judged only for his or her own actions, which is why the chat of other players is not included in your game log. Using toxicity has some sort of "self defense" is not accepted, as all that really does is create more toxicity.

I don't think you ever had someone on your team follow you around for 40 minutes while stealing every piece of farm you attempt to get. Can't afk because I'll get banned, can't say anything to him or I get banned, I just have to remain miserable in an almost hour long game as my team trolls me and most likely won't be punished for it either. I don't think Riot understand the level of trolling that goes on in the games.

I have, personally. It sucks. Probably the most infuriating thing that can happen in this game. However...

a) They're doing this to provoke a response in you. Flaming them actively rewards their trolling. Surely you've heard the expression "don't feed the troll"? Act on it. Remaining silent, and reporting them after the game, is the most cutting way to ruin a troll's fun at your disposal. You're never going to make them feel bad by flaming them. b) When one player is going out of their way to ruin the game for another, it's a 3v5 game. I sincerely doubt the game lasted 40 minutes, in your case.

I've been playing since Pre-Season 1. If there's a type of toxic behavior in this game, I've almost certainly encountered it.

I don't think Riot understand the level of trolling that goes on in the games.

Rioters almost all play this game commonly, some much more than "commonly". A major fondness for League is, effectively, an almost crucial qualification to work there. I can promise you they're aware of it, and they DO ban it aggressively -- it earns an immediate 14-day ban on the first offense when identified. The issue is that the definition of "trolling" can be hard to determine (opinions vary from the strict "playing off-meta" to the super lenient "only intentional tower-diving"), and it's hard to identify at times.

i've always been curious

if a rioter encounters a troll or an inter in his/her games, does the punishment-ing get sped up or do they just hit the report button like the rest of us?

Long ago there has been a certain incident that can be summed up with: Player was banned, Rioter was fired, Player was unbanned. Since then only very few select Rioters wield the banhammer to begin with, and it's typically those who use it responsibly and professionally.

So they probably use the report button.

Actually no, it's not human nature. In the real world, you let the losers scream into the void, and don't debase and embarrass yourself by stooping to their level. When a jackass steals your parking space, you don't get into a screaming match in the Trader Joe's parking lot, you just find a different fucking parking space and move on with your life. When somebody is rude to you at a bar, you go talk to somebody else, you don't break a bottle over their head.

So I don't particularly care what they said to you. If it bothered you, you should have muted them. By engaging in an argument, and likely escalating the situation, you detract from everybody's focus, morale, and enjoyment of the game, through continued abuse of the chat system. This usually results in a simple chat restriction to teach you how to use chat more responsibly, but if you've already worked your way through those, your next step in the punishment tier is a ban.

Look, if this is just a 14-day ban for you, you've got one more chance. Hopefully you can learn from this experience what is and is not worth arguing over, and won't have any more issues going forward.

Again, it does not matter how many reports. One report on a person and their chat logs (and game actions if reported for feeding/griefing/etc) are reviewed. The number of reports simply does not factor into it.

Who cares if Person A gets punished or not - your account was punished because you were person B, and both A and B were wrong here.

This is actually a common (and largely incorrect) theory. Banning players and hoping they return to purchase large quantities of stuff is a pretty poor approach, given the number of banned players who simply stop playing, or who swear to never spend another penny on the game.

While I understand your frustration, please bear in mind that insults are against the board rules, whether targeted at Riot or at the community. This is a friendly reminder because I know you're not in the best of moods right now, but the approach you should take is the one of politely contacting Player Support to see if the escalation from 10-game restriction to permanent ban is intentional in this instance, and, if so, why.
