Why are players allowed to ban champions?

Banning means we don't always play our mains. It might also make it harder to play champions that are interesting or unique, but initially frustrating. The champion could be balanced but, when it's new, hard to play against. So interesting and unique champions wouldn't be played so much. Then they'd get nerfed too far and they get played a lot less again. Riot works very hard to create unique characters, sometimes this could mean they will be played less.

Banning may also discourage players from the habit of thinking outside the box and creating strategies against troublesome champions.

Why ban at all? I don't think it is a good idea.

Your arguments to rid of banning, also supports why banning should exist.

Never having to worry about not having our main means we won't branch out and find other champs we might enjoy. As for new champs, it also means we have to potentially deal with a champ someone hasn't actually used or a champ we have never seen before.

You know what also discourages thinking outside the box? Playing the same linear champion every time because it is the FOTM pick, or facing the same FOTM pick. Develop a strategy against it? Well, trying a brand spanking new strategy in the middle of a match may not go well.

Bans exist as an option in case you have someone you just can't deal against. When I play sup, that is Blitz; because I don't trust my partner not to be a magnet. When I play top, it is Nasus; because I can't be with my team in order to keep him down/under farmed.

Draft pick has bans.

If you don't like that, play blind pick or one of the other game modes.

Why have failure an option as well? I mean it might discourage new players from dipping their toes. Let's make everyone winners.

After every match everyone gets greeted with a victory screen. Everyone gains LP. No losers, only winners. While we're at it let's remove all divisions except challenger. After your placement matches you will be placed in your proper division. Challenger, because you, you are a winner.

Several reasons, unfortunately:

  1. It prevents op meta, where if a champion has a 70 percent win rate, you have to be able to ban him out. This seems like a "haha riot is not balancing their champs" reason, but the truth is that with a game as big as League things will break.
  2. It allows one tricks to prevent hard counter meta. Let's say that champ A is a hard counter to champ B. Without the ban on the hard counter, the champ A main might drop his one trick all together because of hard counters like this.
  3. It prevents tilt for people that get tilted by a certain champ. This reason might seem petty, but I have seen players get tilted by a Fizz or a Riven because they banned something else one time.

Are these 100 percent of the reasons that bans exist? Probably not; but they are all reasons to have a ban system in place. Is this enough to make it a system you want in your game? that depends from person to person. I personally feel that it is a necessity for many people while others probably want it gone. I know this is not going to change your opinion, but I hope I at least showed the basic counter-arguments to your point.

(also sorry for all the downvote spam on the boards, it seems to be the default communication method on these boards)

I hate playing against fidgety champs and Rakan .

It's really to ban champions riot forgets to balance. Would really suck to play against a darius top lane, yi jg, yas mid, draven and thresh bot, every game.

Hi! ^^ Thanks for your arguments. I still think playing a character in a new way to counter an opponent's strategy is fun. I hope that will still happen sometimes.

But I now understand that LoL is a very big game. There are a lot of champions to balance and it's tough to balance them all. And banning will force players to try other champions that they may also enjoy. Sometimes a new strategy may not be the best strategy; there's that risk. Often a strategy to counter a champion may not be a good choice overall. And banning is strategic too. So I understand. I'm glad banning is there on some modes and not there in others. Thanks for the education!

I still hope that Riot balances champions or tweaks them instead of allowing players to ban. Unhealthy matches at first. But healthier community. Fellow players come together when they are forced to brainstorm ways of beating tough champions.

In other communities, even with a smaller fan base, there is lots of activity and talk about how to beat a character.
