What "GG" Means

"GG" means a good game is complete. It does not mean you played well. It means nobody got hurt, nobody got fired, and nobody died. It's the way to let everybody know they just played a game with someone who understands sportsmanship.

And to all those players adding the "EZ" to completely ruin the point of typing "GG"... Yes. Yes it was "EZ" because this is a video game. If it was hard for you then you try too hard at things. If you type EZ then your head is MT. Get clues please and stop making yourself look bad.

I brought up sports teams because it's a similar situation and the same one-sided game can occur. Two teams compete at an event and one team can lose horribly.

But they're still expected to shake each other's hands. This practice is not limited to professional teams, but almost every official event.

The point of the matter is, "gg" is often said as good sportsmanship equivalent of such events, and shouldn't be hated for saying so.

The person that I replied to had the argument that "gg" said during a steam-roll game was poor sportsmanship, I disagreed and provided reasons.

The difference here is that "gg" has gotten a bad rep from people using it in an insulting way. No one uses a handshake as an insult in sports, so the bad connotation isn't there.

A lot of people perceive "gg" after a steamroll as poor sportsmanship because it feels like they didn't mean it. They're basically saying "gg ez" but instead the "ez" is implied. I don't think of it like that, GG is always positive to me, but I can understand the reasoning for those who do.

I'm guessing it stems from similar reasons why people won't really try to compliment other people on games like this: if you say something that you mean amicably it can go how you wanted it to, by them thanking you, or they'll take that and springboard the compliment into an insult either back at you or at someone else.

I'm guessing some people don't like 'gg' at the end of a stomp because it feels like they're using what is supposed to be a kind gesture in an insulting way, because I'll be honest and say that online communities can turn anything into an insult, so some people's willingness to go out of their way to show sportsmanship in that kind of community is a bit more limited.

Personally I don't say 'gg' after a stomp whether I win or lose, but that's because I know many teams have at least one person who will think I'm saying it sarcastically or use it to insult somebody. For closer games I'll say 'gg' without a problem though.

Being able to play a game is good. I have played games where the police took someone to jail during the game. I have played sports where people got their bones broken and needed to be taken off the field by an ambulance (myself included). These were not good games.

If you think it might be taken as insulting to some people, you are probably right. It's almost impossible to not offend some people these days. Being offended has become a cottage industry. The only thing that matters is what is in your heart. If you mean only good by it then let the haters be confused and be a sport. People who understand sportsmanship will appreciate your gesture and that is all that matters.

Text isn't conveyed the same way actual physical gestures are, and everyone who's salty usually sees it as "good game we were very pressed to defeat you and didn't just ruin your faces!" instead of the simple "good game" because they're salty and can't see small things as anything but slights against them.

Getting a "muscle memory" response that has no actual meaning anymore and which half of the time is used to berate people or a situation, is neither honest nor welcomed.

Wait a second, how do you know it's being used to berate people if all they said was, "gg"? For all you know, they said it with the intention as I described, a purely good sportsmanlike handshake at the end of the game.

The only time I see it used with ill-intent is when they say, "ggez".

I'm talking about situations where someone was not flaming the whole game. I agree that if someone that was trash-talking and/or flaming the whole game, anything nice they say at the end is likely to be an insult in the form of sarcasm.

If you want to take it that way... But it's not how I mean it. I type GG after every game. I'm simply acknowledging the sportsmanship of other players. Only in a game with no players displaying good sportsmanship would I not type gg. Foe example, if every player was raging at someone, inting, afk in fountain, ect. I'm acknowledging that you did your best, and that even if I'm much better (or worse), I respect you for the way you played the game. It's not remotely insulting or condescending, because GG has nothing to do with your skill in the game and everything to do with your attitude.

Same, I generally write out a full "gg ty for playing" so people can't take it the wrong way. In the after champ select screen because I am thankful that everyone was playing. If the enemy team had an AFK I will say "Sorry about the AFK, I know that sucks." It is just a matter of being polite, sportsmanlike, and friendly. Heck I have had people who were clearly annoyed and angry they had an AFK but after I apologize for it in the after game screen they cheer up a bit.

I am in complete agreement, I do the same, except I say, "gg," when the game ends and "Thanks for the game," in the end of game screen. I apologize for leavers too.

This. I see people type GG at the end of a game being remade. A player disconnected. Very little playing actually happened. It was not a GG.

I dunno. Sometimes the other team was just better and it feel appropriate, not matter what team you're on to say gg, meaning "Good game everyone, I learnt some stuff by getter my ass whooped." or "Good game guys, I'm gonna say that it was a challenge to stomp you so that you remain positive and that as a result overall queue times are reduced because of the reduction of salt."

Yeah I'm guilty of just saying GG out of habit. But I mean, I'll type it even if I was on the losing end of a beat down so I'm not insulted when other type it after a one sided match.

That 16 year old who's plat friend carried him is GONNA spam his mastery all game and put "GG EZ" at the end. If you get mad about it, you're just giving him what he wants... your rage and your attention.

Just ignore the idiot and realize that anyone who gets their jollies preening and posturing in a videogame isn't worth wasting the time to even respond to. Just go on to your next game and if you're upset about the fact that that player's douchebaggery isn't punished... remember that this is league we're talking about. The borked matchmaking will eventually put him against someone else JUST as rude, immature and obnoxious as he is who will stomp his nuts into the ground and BM him about it. Unless you're fighting some insane pro-level challenger player who never loses his games... that dumb kid is gonna get his face ripped off sooner or later by someone better/cheaper/more overpowered than him who will spill the same rudeness he thinks is cute to give others ALL over him. And he'll rage too...

So don't get upset by dumbasses and their smugness or their lack of basic human decency. Laugh at them. Because when the game does what it does best and shoves it's fist into their backside with a feeding bot lane or a camping jungler or something... they'll deserve it. It's not like any of this matters anyways... it's a freaking game. No sense getting mad over it, or over the little pecker who's preening because he happened to win one of the thousands and thousands and thousands of matches he'll play in his life.

This was just a tip for players who may not have a background in sportsmanship for whatever reason. For real world athletes this is pretty common knowledge. We shake hands after a game and say "good game" because there are millions of worse things to do than play a game we both love. A game is good because it is a game.

I have no trouble at all with people "making me upset". I realize most defects in the socially awkward are the result of bad parenting. I simply took the time to give players a heads up. Make their heads less MT.

Phrase said at the end of a match, either online or in person. Means "Good Game", and indicates one of two things: Either it was truly a good, fairly played and close match, or one team got slaughtered.

Used as an insult. Either in the aformentioned way, or used to insult someone who has preformed an incredibly stupid act.

i dont mind gg, and GG is fine (although i tend to see bm players use caps on it) but if my bot duo went 0/27/5 combined, don't insult me with fake sportsmanship as if everything is hunky dory. it's like watching the chicago bears play football against the childrens team for Tom's school for the blind, deaf, and limbless. I'll honor enemies that give me the "sorry bout the feeders"

I'm a big fan of saying GG regardless of whether or not I won.

It's a sign of sportsmanship and good competition.

Also, there are people I recognize that spam GG EZ in arams and that makes me less inclined to help them when they're on my team and save all of my cooldowns for teammates who are more sportsmanlike or if they end up on the enemy team, it makes me want to target them more because the typical person who says GG EZ tend to be the ones who rage more when they're doing poorly and get tilted.
