The Holistic Approach to the Instant Feedback System
(TL;DR is at the bottom, look for "TL;DR IS HERE") The reasoning I have behind this thread is due to a discussion I had with a Riot Support employee. He (or she) suggested that I posted this here for the development people at Riot. Below is a copy-paste of the ticket I submitted:
Honestly, I don't know much about the reporting system and how it works but I got 14-day suspension. I get it that you guys can't lift the suspension and I'm not asking you to, but does the reporting system take into account the context of the messages? In the sample text that is provided with the notification of the ban, I remember those games, one solo queue game, two normals. And in those games, there were intentional feeders, I'm not talking about player having a bad game. These players literally said "Imma feed now." Obviously, this would warrant an emotional response from anyone, because this is 30-40 minutes of game time that you aren't getting back. So what I hope you guys at support do, or is already doing, is to evaluate the context of the conversation. Look at the game, review what happened, and yes, while this is a lot of work and time that needs to be put forth, I believe it'll give you a more balanced system. Especially in ranked games, it is frustrating to see that you have put your best foot forward and your game is ruined by a few players. Moreover, it is when this happens and your account gets suspended. I hope you guys take this into consideration and thank you for your time.
And the response:
Hello,
I get that games can get frustrating at times but that never excuses responding to that negativity with more negativity like this. Remember, you are responsible for your own behavior only and it doesn't matter who "started it."
Our systems reviews the behavior of all players equally but on an individual basis. It doesn’t matter what someone else was doing or saying as retaliation of any kind isn’t ok. If other players’ behavior needs to be addressed they will be reviewed as well and issued the correct punishment in time.
There is no need to let yourself get dragged down with these players when you have the option of muting and ignoring them. Choosing to lash out at others in this manner isn’t acceptable. Please do keep in mind that this suspension is the final warning for this account and any further unsportsmanlike behavior will result in a permaban through our Instant Feedback system.
To which I replied:
Can I get my money back if I get permabanned? And I don't think that muting/ignoring people is exactly the way people should be solving the problem. Essentially, all you're doing is avoiding the problem instead of facing it. And this goes beyond the game itself, it simply isn't the way to solve problems. The fact that people like this still exists in game indicates that the feedback system simply isn't working or efficient enough. And I actually disagree with you about "who started it". It should be a mutual responsibility. Yes, I completely agree with you that my actions are mine and mine alone. But the term behavior, in itself, means "how you act around around others". The meaning indicates an interaction between two people, hence there is no way that the responsibility of this issue should be only mine to accept. I believe this issue is a lot more important than perceived. Being apathetic is certainly not the solution. Instead, what you should look for is examining the situation as a whole. A punishment that is deserving to each person that participated. Certainly, you can say "well why don't you just mute everyone and not participate?". Well because I believe that the reason chat even exists is to promote communication between teammates. And you'll meet people that you don't like. But it happens in real life too and you can't just tape their mouth and consider the problem solved.
TL;DR IS HERE
Now the message to Development:
Regardless of a win or loss, the responsibility lies on a team. Following this logic, the chat system was created to promote communication between teammates. Yet the Instant Feedback System, quoted by the Riot Support employee, "reviews the behavior {...} on an individual basis". As I stated in my reply, behavior is not the result of a single person. So certainly, the responsibility of the issue certainly shouldn't only fall on one person. Furthermore, the action of muting a teammate doesn't really do much, especially in this case in which they are feeding. In my ticket I suggested that the better approach was to evaluate the situation as a whole. View the pre-game chat, in-game chat, and most importantly, the game itself. The reasoning behind this is all in the above. I look forward to what the community/Riot can do about this. Thanks!
