Some guy called me a "dumb wh*re* and other horrifically degrading names ....

Hedge Witch·10/18/2019, 5:53:46 PM·18 votes·3,704 views

The entire duration of the game we played together, for no other reason than him assuming I'm a female ( which I am )

I noticed several things. No one one my steam stood up for me, told him to stop or did anything. I was playing very well, he was feeding early on, but as the game progressed he was able to get a double kill and then suddenly my team was complimenting him every time he got a kill.

Like, what? ( Keep in mind I was top cs, holding my own in my lane and performing very well )

Then by the end of the game, after he called me degrading names the entire time ( keep in mind my only reply was "You are absolutely getting reported" ) we got to the after match screen ( we lost ) and I asked my team and everyone else to report him for the hate speech he spewed at me the entire game.

2 of my teammates told me I was being a baby about it, and not a single person on the other team cared enough to report him. I reported him for verbal abuse, hate speech, and negative attitude. I told him I submitted a report in the end game lobby and he said "lmao good luck"

I thought for sure I'd be getting a "A player you recently reported has been found guilty and action has been taken" message, but nothing. I looked him up, he's happily carrying on with his day playing more games, as if that entire interaction didn't happen.

It took EVERYTHING in me not to chew him out while he was calling me those names the entire game, and now I'm sitting here bewildered that he hasn't been punished and could freely call me degrading hateful sexist names all game, and not be penalized.

I'm also extremely put off by the fact that not a single person stood up for me. I did absolutely nothing to provoke his behavior.

For anyone that swears "sexism doesn't exist" in this game, you are wrong, it does, and I'm starting to think it isn't a punishable offence.

I’m sorry you went through that, both with that player and with your friends. Fortunately, it only takes one report to trigger a review of someone’s chat. That brings me to my next point: calling for reports can be considered harassment, as you’re essentially asking others to gang up on another player. It’s not necessary, for the reason I’d mentioned above.

I am glad you didn’t respond negatively in any other way; you’re the better summoner in my book.

You should learn how the system works.

  1. Except in cases of hate speech, primarily slurs, the system requires repeat and consistent offenses. Individual sexist comments, while deplorable, are not outright hate speech

  2. You have no guarantee that any alert will be given in the event of a punishment. Why it works this way I don't know, but they could have gotten a chat restriction and you would have no way to know.

  3. Responding even to say someone is getting reported is both pointless and detrimental. You know he won't change his behavior; If the system wasn't going to be a deterrent before you threaten to report, it wasn't going to be one after. Additionally, only one report per game is needed and multiple reports do nothing. You have no reason to say anything in chat to these people. Which leads me to...

  4. Nobody is making you read anything they say. Mute button exists. If I could give women a real life button to mute catcalling I would. The ability to unilaterally cut communication at no risk to yourself is a blessing. If people are mean to you in-game, mute them so you aren't distracted, report afterwards, and let the system work.

The system is designed to regulate how players act, not designed to make you feel personally vindicated. I'm not excusing the actions anyone else in that game took, but had you used the tools properly you would be much less upset over it.

So...you're outraged at the people that had nothing to do with it for not dashing to your defense, m'lady?

You can't have this both ways. It's sexist to treat you like garbage because you're a woman, but it's also sexist to jump to your defense because you're a woman. You are perfectly capable of muting some asshole and going on with your life.

I, like the vast majority of people who play this game, do not care about the genders, ages, sexual orientations, religions, or nationalities of the people we play games with. It's a video game. I just want pleasant people to play with.

Soo uhhhh... I'm a guy, but I surprising know how it feels to have these insults thrown at me. I mostly play support champs and am very optimistic. I get called an egirl a lot.

And honestly, it might feel bad but people shouldn't stick up for you. That can get them in trouble if they fall for the bait. Muting him is 100% the best way to go even if it feels bad. Either that, or DO chew him out in the silliest way you can think of.

Oh and asking for reports doesnt do anything. Just fyi. its binary, not accumulative.

The fact that you say it here makes me think you likely just announced it in all chat in game too when the game started, so I doubt that player "Assumed" it

Don't post here. I asked player behaviour about reporting sexism and they told me I was attention-seeking and buried me in downvotes while making fun of me. This place is full of the same people you find in game that will somehow decide you deserve it because you have anything feminine in your name.

Reporting people for anything sexist does nothing and I've done it hundreds of times at this point. Submitting a ticket may help in particularly egregious cases, but that depends on the support person reviewing it if they ever even do. All you can really do is mute them in-game and they'll get away with it because the system doesn't regulate it. It'd actually be hard to regulate a lot of it except words that have a lot of negative connotation like whore and other veritable slurs. There's no real way for a bot to know the context of harassment on gender since it's vague.

Sorry about that, I would advice to mute this kind of people instantly.

Also, discrimination is a basic coward behaviour very common in these enviroments: some (despiseful) people try to denigrate cathegories that they think are less worth with respect to theirs (race, gender, body features...).

"I noticed several things. No one one my steam stood up for me, told him to stop or did anything "

This right here is your problem. No one in the right mind would defend you. Give us a good reason why we should defend you and risk getting a chat restriction?

Like if I get a 10game chat restriction for defending myself. Why on earth would I defend you, a random stranger and risk that punishment.

Auto4TheWIN10/18/2019, 7:05:36 PM3 votes

You know you could of just muted him right? If he bothered you that much like cmon.

Hedge Witch10/18/2019, 7:11:34 PM3 votes

Very interesting to see a bunch of replies here saying "You could have just muted him" when a week ago someone made a thread on here about why people shouldn't be banned because of toxic chat because the mute button exists, and it was FILLED with people saying that they shouldn't have to mute, and mute is not a solution. :)

Jhins Girlfriend10/19/2019, 11:21:44 AM3 votes

I know this really sucks and I'm sorry it happened, but someone defending you probably wouldn't have helped. Honestly the best thing you can really do is report, mute, and try to move on. If people keep getting punished for it they'll stop. Muting them isn't for their sake, it's for your sake. They can still get reported and punished but you can focus on the game instead of their attitude.

Most of the time you won't get a notification regardless of someone getting punished or not, so you have no way of knowing if he got a chat restriction or if the punishment just hasn't gone through yet. If someone gets particularly nasty you can always send in a ticket to support. They're very nice and understanding about these kinds of things.

for no other reason than him assuming I'm a female ( which I am )

points at your name

not much of a gamble on that assumption when you literally spoon feed it to everyone

edit: and your new name isn't much better

2 of my teammates told me I was being a baby about it, and not a single person on the other team cared enough to report him. I reported him for verbal abuse, hate speech, and negative attitude. I told him I submitted a report in the end game lobby and he said "lmao good luck"

4 reports have the same value as 1 report. stop asking for them because the extra reports don't do anything

I thought for sure I'd be getting a "A player you recently reported has been found guilty and action has been taken" message, but nothing. I looked him up, he's happily carrying on with his day playing more games, as if that entire interaction didn't happen.

that message happens like 15% of the time at best, even ig a punishment did happen. riot won't give the actual percentage but that's the number i've seen on a post at some point

checking the match history won't tell you wether he got chat restricted, which is also a valid punishment

I'm also extremely put off by the fact that not a single person stood up for me. I did absolutely nothing to provoke his behavior.

nobody is required to stand up for anyone, regardless of their gender, age, race or sexual orientation, if they don't feel like it. i suggest you keep your entitlement on that account to yourself in future posts

yay nibbers10/18/2019, 8:49:36 PM2 votes

Why should anyone bother standing up for you, or anyone else, when the mute button exists? Not only can you mute people, but everyone in the game is muted by default now. Learn to cope better, mute and report people being jerks, move on. It sucks that someone was a jerk to you, but you are being a baby about it.

Tele II10/18/2019, 10:03:07 PM1 votes

Why didnt you mute him? You sound disturbed, but you didnt even use the tools provided to stop the disturbance. Anyways, that feedback report is not meant to tell you a specific player has been punished... its meant to remind you occassionally that your reports do get reviewed. So dont take that as any sort of indicator of someone not getting punished. He may have a clean account and this put him on a chat restrict. Chat restrictions also strip you of your honor. If I were you, I'd just move on. These are anonymous strangers, and some of them will just try to offend you for very little reason. They dont know you, dont take it personally. Youre an idea in their mind. You reported him, and now its out of your hands. Dont focus on things you cant control.

Viocie10/18/2019, 11:36:41 PM1 votes

First. U never wait for others to stood up for you, u stood up for urself. Asking people to report is against riot's rule so u shouldn't do it at all. Just report them, u fight for urself. The report system in game doesn't give u reply/feedback 90% of the time, submit a ticket thru the web if u want feedback. Eventho the rioter can't tell you whats the punishment, I believe its against their policy or something. Plus, since its a "chat-relate" report, most likely he is just getting a chat-restriction...

Guys here doesn't understand how we feel against these type of insult. Generally they can't relate to it and they just think "why are the girls bitching again" unless its a very terrible case. That's why ur getting the downvotes because in their brain, they doesn't think its a thing that u should care about at all.

Just go to your best friend and do something makes you happy to calm down. They are the ones that will understand you and support you.

No one one my steam stood up for me,

LOL. Talk about entitled. You're not entitled to having white knights ready to defend you every time someone chews into you. If you're gonna stay on the internet, you better get used to seeing what true equality looks like.

Lost R10/22/2019, 8:57:21 PM1 votes

I hate people that do that. They're the ones I don't give buffs to.

No Pix for you Lulu

No heal for you Soraka

No masterpiece for you Ornn

No lantern for you Thresh

No gems for you Taric

No water for you Nami

No cut for you Pyke

No shield for you Janna

No soup for you

No flower for you Rakan

No tongue for y- oh. TahmKench

Great thing about being a support is you ultimately have other players by the balls. They want to be a shit to you, you don't need to help them. There are three other champions that need your help.

Sałem10/18/2019, 7:12:22 PM1 votes

Maybe it was me when I sniped you Kappa

Ok seriously just report with support ticket they will take action on verbal abuse especially when you are female ( no pun intended im serious ). they will not punish with ban (a week or 2 ) he an only get a chat restriction for that ... tbh I would not care at this point anymore I like to mute my teammates at start play and tell them that you will mute them but if they want something "ping me sums or help me ping ".

You are losing time and your patience with people that don't deserve it, you are giving him more attention by watching if he is banned or not and losing your mind on a random guy that wants that ... Move on and mute chat and nothing of that will happen on your screen. You will not get the justice you think of I tell you from the perspective of player that had reports of people that run down and end 0 20 1 kda or worse and they still play and your case is more verbal harassment and will probably end in a chat ban

You will waste time and fell bad if you continue to care for idiots like that ... not worth tbh Rather mute them and remember that they probably are not better IRL while you are not like ;) . yea feels bad but still, there are nice people out there too worth the time you spend by typing this message on boards and thinking about the person ( not saying you should not post it it was an example only )

The word "whore" is not hate speech, nor can I really think of any word directed at women that would qualify as hate speech. Hate speech specifically has roots in marginalized groups, so word like the "N" word aimed at blacks and the "F" word aimed at gays are legitimate hate speech, and zero tolerance as well. So you wouldn't have been able to one shot him with a report unless he was using zero tolerance words.

He was just being rude, and terribly offensive, yes. But unless he's constantly been blasting and harassing people in games to the point where enough reports have been validly filed against him, your single report wasn't going to impact his account. If he was particularly offensive, that's where you mute him. I've done it many times in many games where people have been seeping assholes. Then I report them afterwards, and even send in a support ticket if I think it requires a human intervention.

floo10/18/2019, 7:10:01 PM1 votes

How can you know he hasn't been punished? You didn't specify what he did, but calling names is usually a lesser offense and punishable with a 10-25 games chat restriction. You don't always get a notification and that player isn't prohibited from playing entirely, so you can't know for sure.

Yes sexism is a problem especially in gaming, but even then, give these people a chance to improve their behavior. If they don't, they'll be banned entirely.

About the other people in your game.. it's similar to viewers of a crime irl, you can't expect them to step in, even if it would make sense, cuz how many people would actually step up for anyone but themselves.

Just mute such people once they start this behavior ingame. Not because "mute button fixes everything", but because you don't get distracted by degenerate shittalk. gl
