Will you get punished for muting everybody right away?

It seems like a great solution to not getting baited into a toxic argument. Assuming I am filling whatever is left or play a role that nobody called... I play my best.. no intentional feeding or trolling.. Can you still get punished for not talking? Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and been punished. It sounds like a great idea if there are no negative consequences. Just for normal games at least.

Nope, but just remember, they can still see your text. So, if you might have issues with habitual habits of typing when someone does something you don't like, I'd even suggest popping your enter keys out and unbinding any keys that open chat.

You can use pings as a universal chat. :)

no, I find more then ever players in games don't talk and in fact don't even respond.

This is a common solution people use. It maybe isn't ideal but you won't be punished for it.
