Why Some Champions Are Toxic
I know, it's not the champions that are toxic, it's the players who play those champions. But I think I've figured out why some champions create toxic players, or, at least, turn them into toxic players. This isn't about the champions themselves, but the effect they have on the players that use them.
(TL;DR at bottom of post).
For background, I'm a
main and have an affinity for squishies like him, and

So I decided to buy
to try the tank meta.
She made the game feel so, so easy. Farming jungle felt effortless, and ganks resulted in a sure kill if not a near-death experience for the enemy. But my teams kept getting destroyed. After a few games, I found myself constantly tilted, which is strange because I tend to be calm even when getting brutalized by the enemy team. But with Shyvana, I became belligerent if my group didn't do well.
After a few games, I realized why.
I think_**(OPINION WARNING) **_ that because meta-relevant champions make the game so easy if played well---or against bad teams in my case---you assume your team will have it easy. But if your team plays off-meta and/or lacks skill, it's not necessarily going to be easy for them. Your meta-relevant champion has advantages that other champions don't, and if you main a champion that is OP in most metas (Yasuo/Zed/Talon) playing them for long enough can cause you to forget.
We become too caught up in our own perspective, in our thinking that the majority of matches will be easy because we're skilled at a champion that demolishes most others and forget that other champions have a harder time securing a kill or simply don't scale as fast or as well.
It doesn't bother me when I play
because I sympathize, experiencing firsthand how much effort it takes to get one kill. I don't rage unless my team is doing something incredibly stupid like dying to dragon at level 2.
But when I played
, I raged and tilted much more quickly and was less forgiving of my team's mistakes. As an aggressive
jungler, punishing enemies who misstep or overextend with low health feels so easy that I can't fathom how my
dies to the enemy
.
The reasons are many: Maybe she's never played Annie before, maybe shehas but rarely faces an Ekko, maybe she's having a bad game. Whatever the case, she's having a hard time, and I should help her instead of raging in chat. Thinking that Ekko should be no problem because he's easy pickings for my champion is not going to win the lane for Annie, my **actions **to help her will.
To summarize, champions that have very strong kits make the game feel very easy and can turns us into unsympathetic jerks. Remember that not all champions are designed to make you feel like a god, and try to help teammates that need backup. Yelling at them only makes the game harder.
If you're losing, try to direct the team to victory by giving advice instead of rage. Even if it's their fault. I've been able to turn a few games around by providing direction instead of derision. If that doesn't work, do your best and grab a spoonful of Nutella while waiting for endgame.
