League: Game or Competition

it comes to my attention often that people say league is just a game. I will leave a summary at the bottom, but I advise reading through. This thread was in response to another player who experienced troll-like behavior and negative repercussions, but it inspires my ire that competitions are treated with the same mentality as if a game.

I responded to another thread with a lengthy post(for my tastes) about the natural difference between a game and a competition and I would like feedback so that this might receive proper consideration.

I know this is probably improper, but I would like to point out that league is not a game, but instead a competition.

in a competition, there is a clear winner and loser, an amount of skill that must be executed to perform the expected situations of the competition(though it may be referred to as a game, however, as much effort is actually invested into gaming and the prospect of E sports. Competition gaming such as league can be referred to as a sport, hence practice, countless hours of devotion and a clear winner and loser) and of course, the potential for bragging rights, fame and even monetary gain

a game is something which can be played purely for fun among a group or by an individual. For instance, taking some of the most popular games into account, first person shooters or fighting games, unless strictly in a competitive environment, most games of this nature are so short that it will not matter to the individual should they lose and their investments are only intended to yield more fun unless referring to the competitive environment established outside of the original criteria of the game

however, league, at the minimum, invests 20 minutes of concentration and effort, even up to an hour and 20 minutes(in an extreme case) and therefor represents a significant investment of time, effort and concentration

we can not stop someone from having fun in a childish manner, but deliberately interrupting another player's strategy wastes time, and as the saying goes, time is money

end quote

now then, people constantly refer to league as a game. If league is a game, there are rules, but rules are free to be ignored by the players as fun is their objective (such as custom games)

however, consider league as a competition. Competitions are often moderated, punish negative behavior of the players, enforce strict penalties upon any unfair advantage a player does not NATURALLY, of their own body and mind, possess over another player and punish teams when a player does not give their best effort towards victory

in League's competitive modes (essentially EVERYTHING other than custom matches), no player knows another unless they have played a match together previously, so, joking around without a basis for the decisions you make with your champion is often non-beneficial to the team and can incite the anger of a teammate or teammates. Instead, players give their best effort to contribute to the team, even if they ignore allied advice, so long as the players making the odd decisions out decide that it is beneficial to the team.

Summary

  1. League of legends, although referred to as a game, is a competition with a clear winner and loser after devotion to the goal of winning

  2. The difference between a game and a competition is that a game is purely for fun among friends or selected individuals while a competition is played with the intention to win while investing time, effort, concentration and optionally enjoyment to this purpose.

  3. Although it is impossible to stop a competition from being fun, it is possible to stop intentional disruptions of another player's strategy and devotion to the competition that is League

Comments would be appreciated. I understand that this is not properly formatted,

Games can be competitions, and vice versa. The point is to have fun, but deliberately harassing and flaming another person does not create a fun atmosphere
