Banned for 2 weeks

Hi Riot!

After 4 years of playing League, I just got my first ban ever for 2 weeks, and the thing is, I've been super toxic lately... I admit. I was wondering if you can give me a second chance, I mean, I know It's not a permanent ban and I'm thankful for that, but I really wan't to play League this week, because in 2 weeks the exams session starts, and I have my free time only for this week. Can you give me a chat restriction instead? I never received one to be honest, well maybe that's because I was super toxic? I don't know. I won't flame anybody ever again. Please review my ban.

I'm afraid that if you jumped straight to a 14-day ban it's because you were likely either extremely toxic, or used zero-tolerance language such as hate speech or encouragement to self harm. Riot will not downgrade or remove a deserved ban simply because it's inconvenient for you.

As a friendly note, be aware that the next ban is a permanent one. So make sure you're on your best behavior in League from here on, as I really do hate to see people lose their accounts. Best of luck to you!

This is the second chance. A lot of games would just ban you the first time.

Just do something else for two weeks, try a new game or start a project. Return with a hopefully more positive outlook, or at least the fear of divine retribution.

UNPOPULAR OPINON: I still think it's a problem that players that are toxic don't get caught sooner. If a toxic player finds it difficult to try and reform themselves and it's getting out of a control, a 14 day ban sounds super harsh for a first time penalty just because the mods are too slow to de-escalate and catch the player beforehand in which could of been fixed sooner with just a chat restriction or a smaller penalty, instead of just "Hey so you've been toxic for 2 weeks and our mod team are too slow to recognise this and possibly stop you before it gets out of hand, anyway here's a 14 day ban".

...but the in-game moderation is done by an automated system, and the immediate 14-day ban is for escalated behavior like hate speech and self-harm, not just an acquisition of low-grade toxicity over time. It's not a "time" thing or a "we didn't catch it earlier" thing: it's a "you REALLY violated the rules, so a small slap on the wrist won't do" thing.

Unfortunately I have seen first hand with long time friends of mine that have been in this situation this guy is experiencing, and I have had recorded chat logs of a lot of the incidents of the suspensions. There has been times when multiple recorded chat logs of games (for the reason of the suspension) have been shown, the first game chat log starts as low-grade toxicity, and then another game shows an even worse behaviour, then proceeding for the third and fourth games to include extreme toxicity like hate speech etc. However I don't see why this could not of just been de-escalated sooner without the need to just smash a 14 day ban on him and it would of saved the player time and gave him a bigger chance to realise what his actions have caused and the possible consequences if he kept going down this line.

Not to mention no warning!? Like if it's your first time their should be at least some level of decency to give a warning, instead of just going all in wombo combo. Riot knows that this game causes toxicity and it's impossible to stop it because of how the game has evolved into, so at least a warning would seem reasonable?

If the behavior in question was a single chat log of zero tolerance behavior before the player in question had come close to receiving a punishment for anything else, the system probably didn't have any indication that a warning might be necessary. The multi-step system is built to do exactly what you want, and that it gives players warnings, put some behavior is so egregious that a strict punishment is necessary.

Personally I agree with this strict punishment in these cases, because I don't think it should take a slap-on-the-wrist to realize that hate speech or encouraging another player to harm themselves are behaviors that are unacceptable in a game.

In short, I agree with you that a lot of toxicity can be prevented by early warnings, but the system is designed currently does this in all but the worst cases. I don't agree that these egregious cases should be given significantly more leniency than they currently are.

I agree with your post, honestly, I just believe it's more so the fact that because Riot knows that LoL has one of (if not, the most) toxic fanbase of all time, it's not even up for discussion considering the fact that players have to constantly go into games surrounded by an atmosphere of toxicity (especially when losing) all the time, it's almost inevitable to stop a player from acting upon this behaviour at least just once. This game causes players to lose their patience easily if they're not good at self control and when almost everyone in a game is constantly just throwing toxicity at each other, I think words like "kys" or "gg ez" really are the least to worry about when I hear half the stuff that is in my games sometimes.

In a lot of games, yes this behaviour should be dealt with immediately, however since LoL is nefariously known as the most toxic community in a video game, and the environment that players are in constantly, can you really blame them? I think there should be a little more leniency towards toxic behaviour with some players. I'm not saying "Oh this guy told someone to kill themselves we will let it slide", no! but maybe if they have a good honour rank or something, Riot could think "hmm well.. he does have rank 4 honour, it could of just been one of those days" I'm just giving ideas. However it's up to Riot to decide.

The vast majority of players have never even gotten a chat restriction, let alone the 14-day ban that this behavior earns on the first offense, so I don't believe this statement is accurate.

Riot could think "hmm well.. he does have rank 4 honour, it could of just been one of those days"

Personally I don't think it's ever okay to excuse "go kill yourself" with "it's just one of those days."

I'm just giving ideas. However it's up to Riot to decide.

They have though -- they've decided that behavior is completely unacceptable, and merits a 14-day ban no matter how much honor you have.

I intentionally threw a game once, because a person said he was going top, and i was goign to go support, but then he switched to blitz last second, and told me to go to top as a thresh who already bought all of his support items, this was way back when runes and masteries didnt get the change. I feel like Rito doesnt look at the chat in champ select, because the blitz straight up lied to everybody on the enemy team that he called support and they believed him, he completely DEMONIZED me. After that, I got banned for I did threw the game. the only other things I do is leave games :P I have been chat restricted, but i must have been hella mad or reported for just words I used for normal conversations because they were either toxic at me and decided to report me and abuse the system since it usually picks up like cursing?
