Cat went missing, need some cheering up/good wishes

For the last hour and a half, I searched my house and the neighborhood [by foot and car], and can not find my cat. I've only had him for 40 days and I'm just terrified he won't come back and I'll never see him again. I love him despite it and I don't know if I'll be able to sleep. I left food out to hopefully entice him to come back, but I'm just a mess. Can someone cheer me up or give me good wishes?

Update @ 5am: Thank you for all the well wishes, good thoughts, and awesome comments. I woke up just a few minutes ago to a small bell and the crunching of food. Roscoe made it back and is happily chowing down on the remaining food. He seems just fine and if I get a chance, I'll update with a picture.

Just make sure you keep that food out. They depend on you and shouldn't go far. Hope he comes back :(

It probably won't mean much, but cats always return at some point if they've enjoyed their stay long enough.

I'd gladly give you a kitten or two of mine since I tend to have a number of them, but you're probably all the way in NA. Amumu

but don't worry. It's just the world that it's in luckily.

If the cat's really attached to you during that 40 days, it would still come back at some point. I raised my cat from its kitten stage, and our family don't mind if our cat went missing for a week round the neighbouring hood, since she knows her way back anyway. Just relax, he'll come back. ;)

Kats have extremely good map memory. It should come back as long as nothing happen to it or another person didn't take it in.

If you have treated him good enough he would naturally come back, cats are like that.

It's pretty common for cat owners to open a window in the morning before they attend school or work for the cats to go out and to come back home with in the evening, I think.

Hope he comes back.
