New and discouraged

Hello,

I started League of Legends a few weeks ago. After playing a few bot games where I had a lot of fun I gave Riot 25 dollars and bought a couple skins to thank them for the enjoyable hours.

After bots got boring and too easy I started playing PVP games. I've met a few nice people but by and large people are not. I've read a bit about the LOL community and I can assure you this is not some psychological bias favoring bad experiences; I am quite capable of evaluating the number of games with nice people v. Toxic people. It really isn't that hard, since it is nearly every game. Please note these are just normal games - I am not even high enough for Ranked where I suppose winning actually matters.

Here are some rules that seem to be prevalent in this game:

  1. If you end up in a game that was partially pre-made, everything WILL be blamed on you, even if you only die once the entire game and they lose all of their lanes.

  2. People will auto-lock characters for lanes they never called, but you will be yelled at for picking a lane you were the first to call.

  3. Heaven forbid you play support and your adc turret dives at level 4 and dies - yes, that too is your fault.

  4. Being new and put in a lane with an enemy level 30 with 3000 wins when you have a total of 60 wins will be your fault, even if you don't feed them at all so they get annoyed and roam. Even if you ping and your bot stays pushed up to the enemy turret, it is your fault they got tanked.

  5. If you are not blamed yourself, someone in the game will be treated terribly. Do not stick up for them because then you will be cursed out even if previously they felt you were doing fine.

  6. Do not ever let anyone know you are reporting them for being terribly abusive, after the game the a user will tell the enemy team to report you and sometimes they will.

  7. People will often AFK or purposely feed when they don't get their way. Meanwhile more often then not I end up having to play a role I didn't want to because someone demanded a lane I called first.

  8. Even if your team is winning, there will be a troll who tries to vote to surrender over and over again and go insane when he rest of the team declines.

As of now I almost always have 8 to 10 more losses than wins due to all of this bad behavior. I am not an amazing LOL player but I at the very least don't feed unless I'm instructed to dive in and make a play I didn't agree with, or if the other lanes feed and the team is so massively behind there is nothing I can do.

I have a lot of room to grow but I'm not sure if I can take the abuse or watch someone else being abused EVERY game - even games we win. I think maybe 1 out of 10 games people are polite - and I am not sure if I should continue to spend my free time in this environment. Does it get any better? In what type of games?

I'll be honest. At some point, whenever there's a troll or a rager on my team, I just laugh because I give 0 craps anymore. Yes, we'll probably lose, but as long as I do good, that's a personal win. Who cares if we still end up loosing the game? They lost, I'll just keep getting better.

If someone flames me, I say LOL and move on with life.

But it is quite annoying. My suggestion: Friend anyone you've played with that you've had a pleasant time with and eventually you'll have enough friends that at least someone should be online when you are. And then ALWAYS queue with a friend. So when there's a troll on your team, you can just look at each other and laugh it off.

I'll be honest. I haven't play all that many games with abusive players though. Queue with me. Maybe I'm lucky. :)

Those nice players you mentioned meeting... send them a friends request. Play with them. Get to know each other. If you keep at it with the same group, you will learn how each other play eventually, and you will be a better team. And who knows? You could make really good friends with them. Give that a shot...

This game is actually pretty great. Don't give up just yet because of a few of the worst players of the community.
