I have not and will not spend money on this game! [Explanation]

qEsZ7LJwvc··16 votes·4,924 views

I love this game, I have played this game since it existed.

[Adding in a little note about my history with this game as well] I have played this game since it was around, YEARS, I have played from bronze to diamond, and I also have had 5 accounts permabanned. I am not someone to intentionally feed or afk, I simply put tend to type a lot... and people tend to get offended by things that in my understanding of this world aren't that offensive... and I tend to not respond very well to people growing sensitive of these things.

I don't think that I'm a bad person, and I play plenty of games where people are thankful for the experience of playing with me.

Sometimes I'm just hungry and don't deal well with some 12 year old whos mom just yelled at him getting a little angry.

We are all people, and people by nature are quite volatile.

I have gone through all of the things I'm discussing and think that I have a pretty rare and informative perspective on the whole situation. [/end pointless introduction into who I am]

Here is why I have never and will never spend money on the game that I love and play so much:

  1. You permanently ban players, while I'm perfectly understanding of the fact that some times people go to far, there is absolutely no reason to ever completely remove an account from play besides POSSIBLY proven attempts at actually defrauding or cheating at the game in some way.

Clarity

I think that Cheaters, Habitual Leavers, and Botters should be permanently banned and IP/MAC ADRESS Banned. Obviously.

I think that Time-Bans are completely logical for intentional feeding on any sort of regular basis.

If someone rages all day every day, give them a chat ban, or even better just completely squelch them where they can't talk, then giving them the CHOICE to start over on a new account and try not to rage, or just continue on being UNABLE to rage - but still having all of the things they payed good money to have.

  1. Whether it is your fault or not your servers are fucking garbage right now, for months, and its something that I can almost guarantee that at least once a week I'm going to log on to play in the very limited window that I have to play and either be unable to completely or even worse I'll be able to and then randomly disconnect (at no fault to me or my ISP).

I remember a time when you guys offered RP as a means of compensating for a couple of hours of down-time, or in the few events that you had issues over a period of time you offered written detailed apologies explaining the intricate details of the situation.

I at least felt like you gave a crap beyond the "economic" motivations behind keeping your game functioning...

Recently that has been lost to me.

  1. I absolutely detest the fact that you expect people to play over 500 games before they are even able to play one single full (to my understanding) game. Even if you buy RP and buy every single champion you still lack the runes and the summoner level to play those champions in ranked before this point. I consider a full game to be a ranked game in which you have the correct runes to play with any champion you choose to play with.

Your current system is awful, imagine that anybody who is brand new to the game is actually 20 levels or roughly 100 games away from being able to jungle with any sort of real presence in the game without grossly snowballing off a few early kills. This means that in what is a huge investment of time to a lot of people you are actually learning the game wrong. Learning to play this game with no fear of a feral flare udyr sprinting out of the jungle erasing you in seconds (BEFORE THE 45 MINUTE MARK) is simply learning to play it wrong.

  1. I think as much as a result of 1-2-3 as an additional issue is the horrible community. The report button is the reason that the community is as bad as it is. Take the report button away and you know what people who aren't bags of insane rage will do to combat insane bags of rage, the mute button... the proper action.

I can't begin to count the number of games I've seen the word "report" trigger a firestorm that people can't possibly begin to rationalize. In my personal experience games that don't have a report button are slightly less friendly to the super-sensitive kid who cries because someone calls him a noob, but it is absolutely a better place for me to play... free of people attempting to push my buttons to justify their own insane reactions.

  1. I find this to be a different issue than 2... You have no servers on the East Coast?!? My ping in Northern Latin America is 40ms-60ms, my ping in the North American server has steadily risen from the old 70ms-90ms to a wonderful 110ms-170ms [Completely excluding the random 1-10second delays caused by Reason 2] I live in the North-East, it isn't geographically sensible that my ping should vary so much.

I remember back before you decided to hide the fact that the game was completely unfair for people playing on the east coast, seeing people with 10ms-25ms ping very regularly with me sitting at 70ms... now I'm certain these people are likely playing at 50ms while I'm playing at 170ms... do you realize how much of an advantage that is?!?!

There are plenty of options out there to fix these concerns, some of them are completely free...

I personally find the game still quite enjoyable at 200ms ping (which I hit sometimes) even with other people running around reacting to things I couldn't possibly react to... so whats to prevent you from installing that 200ms ping on all players, evening the playing field for those of us who don't have dial-up still and can at least maintain a 200ms ping.

I have more reasons, and I intend to continue adding more, I would love to hear some other people's reasons, or comments on my reasons... I'd love to have the confidence it requires for me to spend money on this game, but I just don't see it happening unless we address these things as a whole rather than attempting to throw band-aids at each of the stab wounds until they all get infected and we die.

I once said I wouldn't spend money on this game.

Boy, did that turn out wrong.

qEsZ7LJwvc3 votes

I've been playing for years now, remains true to this day. I can't imagine spending a single dime until at least most of if not all of these issues are resolved.

There's plenty of people with your perspective (myself included), but this very same post has been restated multiple times over the past few months to no avail. Unless you get nothing short of an LCS player or high LP Challenger to speak out against it, forget it.

My best advice it to find a different moba.

I haven't even begun to get any runes. I'm still only half way towards getting all the characters. I have a good friend who tells me pro advice and to just focus on getting my ranking higher. But thats what I don't care about. Ranked is for those who want to test themselves. Get to be the best. And show it. I play for the enjoyment. Wish I hadn't even tried ranked for this season. My rank has stayed at Bronze 5 for months because I didn't care to get it out. I have yet to also spend anything on LoL. It's tempting though. I never knew they would give out RP sometimes. Except for a few apologies and contests. The community has gotten very serious and (as many would say) all about the META.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

I wouldn't suggest ever playing ranked without at least 3-4 full rune pages. It is a huge disadvantage.

I don't think you are enjoying the full extent of the game playing against people who can have up to a 2,000+ gold advantage over you at level 1 (considering the cost of the stats).

Particularly when those stats start scaling into the late game.

Stephenizgod8 votes

I disagree with your point on permaban, the threat of losing everything you bought should dissuade any cheating or something, if you are still dumb enough to get banned then you deserve it.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

I updated the post for some clarity, cheating and botting are obvious reasons someone should be permabanned/macadressbanned/ipbanned

1800HookMyLane1 votes

So how about that troll 5 man premade that all co-operatively abuse the Report button?

ModUlanopo3 votes

There is a behavioral subsystem that filters out false and retaliatory reports. It's so accurate that Lyte offers a personal apology to anyone who is punished when they shouldn't be, which has averaged 2-3 people a year.

You've been permad 5 times...? Stop coming back.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

I have never once done any of the things that you guys are talking about. All I do is say "Hey ryze you scale off mana" Ryze ignores and rages at team for "feeding", I say "Ryze you still don't have ROA or Frozen Heart", he ignored and continues to rage at team for "feeding." Then I say in all-chat (where my team has been berated all game) "This ryze's items" and by the end of the game I'm berating the ryze...

Because I'm 15-2 and hes feeding, and my entire team is responding to his rage...

Repeat this hundreds of times...

And yes sometimes I also say "Hey retards fucking come do baron" when my team chases a nidalee after a near-miss on an ace... but you know what, I guess I'm an awful person.

With the current system I get permabanned because im consistently not-that-bad, and kids who are atrociously offensive once in awhile every so many games, the ones you guys are actually talking about, get to stay around and play.

Gavran3 votes

No I'm actually talking about you. Nobody who should be playing this game racks up five permas. The fact that you try to blame it on people being "overly sensitive" is evidence enough.

If you feel that you don't want to invest real money in this game, then you are entitled to that. However, I think a lot of what you're saying is not really valid.

For one, you've been banned 5 times. 5 TIMES. This isn't a case of "I made some mistakes, got banned for a week, now I'm reforming." This is "I repeatedly offend the community, and got permabanned MULTIPLE TIMES." You have to be stubbornly toxic in order to pull that off, as I don't think its easy to get permabanned. The threat of losing any money you might invest is real to you, so it makes sense you should be cautious about spending money. However, that threat works in a different way: preventing people from continuing their poor behavior in order to protect their account they've invested in. Also, banning IPs can be trouble. I've read from a Rioter that they once tried that and banned an entire college dorm. I've played from within a dorm before and I know a lot of others who have as well; its not fair to punish a huge group of most likely well-behaved players just for one idiot.

I can't really say much for their server status right now, I've not had a great deal of issue with it personally. I agree they should fix it, but its likely we won't hear about it until its fixed, and I'd rather them spend their time on fixing it anyways.

I detect that you might be frustrated with the leveling process since you've leveled at least 5 accounts, but you may have a point. While I think its necessary to have a learning period in a game where there is so much to learn, jungling is one thing that is really hard to teach to newer players, and is not supported well right now. However, I don't really see why that's a reason not to spend money on the game. I agree that the rune system needs a lot of work, but its not completely terrible. Just sort of bad.

Reporting is very important: its a function that isn't missed until its gone. Any self-respecting online game has some sort of report function, and that's because it works. When a person gets caught repeatedly doing bad behaviors (gets reported) then it makes it easy to catch those players who are making the community frustrating and punish them for it. The toxicity would only grow without the report function because otherwise there is no threat preventing people from just being complete assholes. That's like taking the teacher out out of the classroom and saying "just ignore the bad kids." It doesn't usually work.

Don't really have a lot to say about the extra server. I live close to the East Coast as well and know for a fact I don't get as good ping, but is it really that much of a difference? As I said, I don't have enough info on this.

As I said before, you don't have to spend money on this game if you don't want to: its your prerogative. You just lose a lot of validity when you've been permabanned 5 times...I mean, that basically means you are one of the reason to NOT spend money on the game.

tainteddaze1 votes

Look bro your misunderstanding something. The op has been ban 5 times cause he don't give a fuck about his smurfs he makes. Its like me. I don't give a fuck about the smurfs i literally only go into the game to ruin peoples experience. I don't care about them cause they do the same shit to me day in and day out. So op is only saying that he won't spend money because how easy it is to become perma banned. I have leveled over 20+ accounts to lvl 30 trolling new players trying to get them to quit along the entire way. Cause i hate the way riot handles everything. They allow the trolls to never get punished while only people who rage in general get punished or who type in the chat logs for the most part. The system itself is complete shit.

This isn't even going into the server status and how long it takes to rework or release or even fucking bug fix the game. I mean riot has nothing but huge massive problems that they never fix what so ever. Its disgusting watching such trash run this game. Its the reason i won't give riot a dime.

Also riot can remove your account for any reason if they so please to. So even if you are a good summoner and never do anything wrong riot can still remove your account if they please. Hell they could even make a mistake and delete your account and you wouldn't get shit back cause the ToS states that you get completely fucked.

Now on the rune system it really isn't bad its honestly not as bad either going into ranks. I do it with 1 rune page i just make that page designed for certain champions like all ap account, or all ad account. This way you can do any role with the same runes and be successful on it and you don't need to grind out insane champions and runes. You can get to diamond doing this if your a good player.

AbiwonKenabi4 votes

Dude, you are using probably one of the worst excuses for being a jerk I've ever heard. Players don't want to deal with crap like that, and that's why accounts like that get banned so easily. You do the very thing that you dislike--that is, as you put it, "ruin other people's experience"--because somebody did it to you. Are you like 12? No sorry, I know plenty of 12-year-olds who don't do that. Are you 3? No wait, I have two three-year cousins, and although they have issues with sharing sometimes, they usually understand the phrase "treat others the way you would want to be treated."

I don't have any sympathy for people who make accounts, troll on them and ruin others' experience and then get banned for it, all because they feel they have been wronged. You got the ban because you deserved it. You aren't fixing anything by acting that way in addition to the people who treated you that way. You know how it feels. Its not cool. Why would you do it to other people?

As for doing this as an act to get Riot's attention...do you really think that will work? Why would they respond to somebody acting like a spoiled child? If you don't like the way they run things, then play another game. If you enjoy the game too much to quit, then actually write Riot with your concerns like a sensible adult. You go on and on about how "trolls aren't punished" and that instead "people who rage" are getting punished...in my mind, both of those types of players are bad and should be punished. In fact, I'm sure I've read somewhere (some Lyte post probably) that both of those people are getting punished and they will continue to be punished as long as the community doesn't want to deal with that type of behavior.

As for bugs and servers...I really don't have enough knowledge to say anything intelligent about this other than I'm sure the majority of other people so loud-spoken about this topic probably aren't very knowledgeable either.

Riot has control over your account. Legally, they can do whatever they want, and you agree to these terms whenever you click "Agree" on a new patch. If you get screwed, well Riot is just going to lose customers fairly quickly, aren't they?

Deep Terror Nami3 votes

I agree that the Rune system is terrible, and that the servers suck even when they aren't getting DDoS'd, but I think that's where I stop agreeing. Try naming one popular online game that won't permaban, and I'll give you an example of them permabanning. The toxicity and cheating they ban for is decided to be bad by the community, not Riot. It is not acceptable here, in any other game, or in real life, and if removing those people from the community is the only way to get rid of that behavior then so be it. We do the same thing in real life, too. Your ping, I'm sorry, but they likely put their servers where they service the most people. It's a business, it's about efficiency. I have no doubts that new servers closer to your region will pop up if the game continues to make sufficient money for them.

There are plenty of commercial products to protect against DDOS attacks, it's a matter of a financial giant getting off their ass and investing a little capital that has confounded me for the past year.

Most of this stuff is a bit too touchy for me to comment on, but the way the Rune/Champion unlocking system works is a great big bundle of pointless bother. Runes in of themselves frankly shouldn't exist, as they give power, however small an amount, not to the most skilled player but to the person who has the best Google-Fu. And more to the point, they actively hurt experimentation for anyone without excess time and money-you must choose between more champions, runes for said champions, or runes you'd just like to test out on the champions you already own. I'd do the math for how much time it takes to get the average 17,000-21,300(!) IP for a 6,300 champion plus a full set of runes for just one style of play of said champion, but suffice to say it's a long ass time for people who want to do things other than LoL in their free time.

I would take what you were saying more seriously if this wasn't your what 6th account? at that point YOU set a trend and sure I can understand having bad days and getting trolled sucks and sometimes you just really want to let that kid know how nasty it is that his parents are siblings haha and I have been known to do that from time to time but I make sure its not a regular thing so I don't get banned. you seem to have done just fine in making your bad behavior a regular occurrence causing your account to get banned repeatedly soooooooo I see you have some points but your own history kinda makes half of what your saying hypocritical.

Now don't get mad cause I think perma bans are really stupid like holy crap all the time and effort I have put in because of other people group banning me cause of a bad day or even a bad week is really stupid. not fair at all. so you have a good point there. Rages should get muted from chat automatically cheaters using bugs should be banned and bad players should be set back five levels lol but then I think the ONLY people that should have account permanently banned are people that mess up every game. they play intentionally just to mess with 4 other people at a time. people who only play the game to mess it up don't deserve to play.

That being said the ragers, the unskilled, bad communicators all I think that requires is nudges in the right direction not a Hammer smashing all the work they have put in so far. its just not fair

but overall you make a good case I upvote this

I live in the most densely populated part of the United States that isn't California. I am 100% confident that there are at least as many if not more players in "my area" than any other part of the united states. Also, clearly its a bit more complex than just the geographic location, seeing as I connect to a server that is just as far away (Northern Latin America) and have a much lower ping.

It is impossible for someone with a chat ban to ruin your experience in game, they just don't have enough characters to type out that can possibly generate them any sort of ability to ruin your day.

So I don't see how it is needed for the drastic amount of time and money they could have put into their account should be taken away when there is an existing system to prevent them from continuing on their destructive path even if they don't choose to reform on their own.

If the person is going to rage no matter what then wouldn't you rather play with them unable to talk then be the poor guy that has to play with him at level 11 raging even harder?!?!

Having these people make new accounts to rage on isn't fixing anything, it just removes integrity from the RP system and ruins the experience of newer players...

Seeing as low levels consist of mostly banned people and new players... its just a horrible mix.

SNES Wes6 votes

It is impossible for someone with a chat ban to ruin your experience in game, they just don't have enough characters to type out that can possibly generate them any sort of ability to ruin your day.

So you're telling me that just because they've been muted, they can't run out and feed on purpose, or go AFK at fountain? If your behavior in game is rotten, why should you be allowed to stick around?

qEsZ7LJwvc2 votes

I edited my post for some clarity... but my point is that these people aren't just going away when you ban them... they are going and rampantly ruining games of newer players - and eventually before they get permanently banned again getting back to level 30 and back to your elo and ruining a couple more games of yours.

I also think that the awful rune/mastery/level progression system paired with these permabans just adds to the frustration and makes the entire situation more likely to occur in the first place.

I don't think that having permabans around has done anything to stop this behavior at all... so why use them!?!

SNES Wes5 votes

I don't know about you, but I know that my account, and all the money and time I've put into it could be taken away if I become toxic. Knowing that, I will never become toxic. Sounds like a pretty good deterrent to me. If you get perma-banned and lose an account with or without money invested into it, you have no one but yourself to blame.

Deep Terror Nami3 votes

I assume this was a reply to me;

A chat restricted player can very easily ruin your match, as it has happened to me (not because they were chat banned, but because they went on a temper tantrum). They can bait you into thinking you're in a 2v2 and just leave, follow you around just to CS steal and take experience from your lane they don't belong in, feed the enemy, or just afk. They do it all the time, and there is no way to fix their behavior sometimes.

Sorry about your experience with low levels, but I don't recall coming across more than 2 or 3 smurfs (at least who admitted it, or they were clearly very experienced) while leveling up and who were toxic in any way. Did have a team of bots in Dominion once, though. If you keep banning them, they will stop wasting their and everyone elses time with their toxicity eventually.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

A theory that has long existed and failed to come to pass in years and years and years in the history of gaming.

Banning people forever just creates enemies of the game.

Go make a new account and get to level 30 again and you won't have this same opinion.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

I also want to note that I can assure you that same player played a couple of completely functional games that day as well... but if/when he gets banned for going crazy, and then has to level up to level 30... try playing with him then, its going to be a lot worse.

Kaine2 votes

Dont worry.

I think I paid for about ten other people to keep playing.

Bet you are glad :D

qEsZ7LJwvc3 votes

Lol, and I greatly appreciate it... But I personally would have paid that myself if I knew there was integrity behind my purchase.

Daen2 votes

I also have had 5 accounts permabanned.

Sigh. You'd think you would have learned after five accounts.

You permanently ban players

"Stop banning me pls" - FTFY

This is a downside? I never want to have to play with someone that makes the experience of others worse, and if it's so egregious that it requires a permanent ban it's absolutely deserved.

I think that Cheaters, Habitual Leavers, and Botters should be permanently banned and IP/MAC ADRESS Banned.

Permanently banned yes, IP/MAC banned no. Keep in mind many players play from public computers or on school networks, and IP/MAC address banning can ruin the experience for far more people than is necessary.

Whether it is your fault or not your servers are fucking garbage right now

It's neither their fault nor their servers. I highly recommend researching DDoSing/botnets and how severe it can be for most business that aren't Google.

The report button is the reason that the community is as bad as it is. Take the report button away and you know what people who aren't bags of insane rage will do to combat insane bags of rage, the mute button... the proper action.

No. Just no. Muting, by definition, is a reaction brought about by negativity. That is not a solution, that is a patch over a much more significant problem.

You have no servers on the East Coast?!?

No, they don't. They are working on it, however, and it's a very time-consuming and expensive process.

whats to prevent you from installing that 200ms ping on all players

Should Riot also ensure that all players have equal packet loss or massive ping spikes to other players, just to keep the playing field level?

The majority of your points are either not valid or heavily biased due to the fact you clearly don't seem to care that you are ruining the experience for hundreds if not thousands of players.

qEsZ7LJwvc1 votes

Yes, and I realize they are working to fix this... I don't suggest that they are slacking off in fixing it, its merely just on the list of things that must be fixed before I believe this game holds the credibility to earn my $ in their pockets.

I don't mean this as a list of demands of what they aren't trying to fix, it is merely a "State of the Union" in which the union is of those people who hold games to a higher standard when they use the 'RP' style pricing.

If this game just cost $60 like every other game, I'd have payed it forever ago... but it doesn't.

1800HookMyLane1 votes

They aren't working to fix server stability. If they were they would have had an eastern server years ago. 5 years and only 1 server, sounds like a lot of ass dragging to me.

MyAccountYouGuys2 votes

They have been setting up servers all over the globe in the interim, though. Their market does go way beyond this hemisphere now, but it would be nice to see some more infrastructure lovin' on the homefront, as it were.

1800HookMyLane1 votes

They have been a multi million dollar company for 3 years. Yet instead of prioritizing where they originate from and where their biggest market is, they instead put additional servers in 3rd world countries.

1800HookMyLane1 votes

Evidence or it didn't happen.

qEsZ7LJwvc2 votes

Exactly my point, if there are news stories out there about this, why isn't Riot talking to me about it.

There was once a time when something like this happened that we would have been given the people's address so we could go bash them with a bat, and then been rewarded with RP for doing so...

That time is long gone, they hide behind generalities and remain vague when they do bother to explain issues - to look a little better to hope a few less players feel as I do and a few more players just fork over RP money.

I hate to pretend to know their motivations, but I can see no logical reason for the change in Riot's actions besides a change in their motivations.

UaSOkrfUHB1 votes

That's all I am trying to say my dude, I appreciate your unbiased opinion, unfortunate angry trolls have to get so hostile.

AbiwonKenabi2 votes

Riot HAS talked about it. If there is nothing to report, we'd get mad at them for reporting back to us with nothing to report. So they might as well save time and continue to fix the problem. They've also said the problem is often with ISPs themselves, not just Riot servers directly, so there's more to the problem than just "hire some security" as many people are saying.

Also, give their address? Really? They have never done that and probably never would.

Ayodonen2 votes

You want to find something, use your own eyes. Do some digging and you'll see that every online game at one point in time or another as DDoS attacks on their servers. The difference is when and if the company that made said game invested into server security. After that the DDoS attacks stop till they find a new way to attack the servers. The server strain hitting LoL right now with thousands logging off in-game would be an overload in the servers. So either they downgraded their servers to not be able to support the mass community they have or DDoS attacks have flooded their network. Pick one to complain about.

1800HookMyLane1 votes

People don't hack games for fun or because they have nothing better to do. Acts of aggression are a reaction to an action. Riot has provided a subpar game that is not only volatile when describing it's stability, but just downright unplayable unless you're on the west coast where their single centralized server is located.

This is a multi-million dollar company that made 77.2 million dollars from March 2013 to March 2014 just off of Riot Point purchases. That's not including additional revenue from advertising or their Youtube channel and their Twitch channels.

Honestly, no other company shits on their playerbase as bad as Riot. Not even Blizzard. So for Riot to repeatedly get "DDoS"ed, reap what they sow.

MyAccountYouGuys5 votes

People don't hack games for fun or because they have nothing better to do.

Oh yes they do, it's happened before and it will continue to happen. People have needed far less reason to DDoS anything than 'unsatisfied customer'.

'For teh lulz' isn't just a joke or meme, it's an ideology. That doesn't mean the asshats being dicks to the rest of the playerbase was the reason the servers were spotty at best the past little while(hello Sugar Rush and Double IP Weekend stress), but completely denying its existence is incorrect.

AbiwonKenabi4 votes

People do hack for fun. Furthermore, another reason is that this is the one of the hugest games in the world right now, and I guess you'd be big shit for hacking it...? I don't know, hackers don't need much of a reason.
