How Do Provisionals Work?

From the title of this post, I know im going to get the typical answers of "Its all about MMR" but just hear me out. I am going to be ending this season in the unfortunate rank of silver 4, even though I thought I deserved better. So during provisionals next season, if I were to queue with someone who had not done any provisionals yet and was in a high elo last year, say diamond for example. Would this bring my rank up after provisionals? Would it bring his/her rank down? I just don't want to win 7 out of 10 provisionals like I did this season and end up in Bronze V with 0 LP again. So I guess my overall question is if I were to duo with someone of a way higher rank than I have would it be able to get me higher in rank after provisionals or will I see myself in Bronze for many months of terrible grinding again?

Significantly higher? Probably not more than 100-200 mmr, but it'd definitely increase it. And the Diamond player's would certainly go down. I imagine it'd work just like it does in normals, where it adds them together and takes the average.

Unless it still won't let you queue because of last season's rank. I'm not sure if it would or not.

Either way, I wouldn't be afraid of Bronze if I were you. I just hit s4 this week. Pretty happy with it myself, but I'm confident if I get thrown back into Bronze I'll carry out immediately. I can see the skill difference like night and day.
