How do provisionals work?

Season 4, I won 3/10 games and got Bronze 2. Just played this seasons provisionals, won 6 out of 10 so I was very optimistic. Bronze 3 How is it possible to win more than half of provisionals, doing better than you did last year with much more experience under your belt, and then get a lower rank? Please explain this process to me.

Dude I won 3/10 and got Bronze 3 S4. This season I won 6/10 and got Bronze 5. Riot does not know what they are doing. They are freaking drunk.

Season 4 was when you began playing ranked. You started at about Silver IV or V when you entered with a fresh account. 3/10 put you in Bronze II.

When Season 5 began, your MMR was not completely reset. It was a soft reset that pushed your MMR at little higher (towards the average). For example, if you were in Bronze IV at that point, maybe it pushed you up to Bronze III or II. It appears that you did your placement games duo with a partner, which can have an effect on how much MMR you gain or lose. It makes sense that going roughly even in your placement games put you right there.

It is entirely based on your MMR and the MMR of the other players in the match.

If you're playing with bronze MMR players then you can't expect to get a lot of MMR if you win.
