Yes, because you definitely can't do anything if you're first pick. You can't pick a safe champion that does well against a wide variety of teams or anything, and you definitely can't have your allies assist with counter picking.

Teamwork is a thing after all, and if you don't have teamwork it's not the enemy you're losing to.
