Welcome to the latest installment of Between Two Turrets, a Q&A series through which we connect you with various Rioters to chat about League, life, and anything in between. You can expect a new Q&A every two weeks or so, with Rioters from all over jumping in to spend some time with you on the Boards. You can also check out past installments!

This week, we’ve got collegiate lead Michael “RiotSherman” Sherman!

Hey there! My name is Michael Sherman, but everyone just calls me Sherman, and I lead up our college esports program, otherwise known as the uLoL Campus Series.

A little bit of background on me, I’ve been at Riot for just under 2 years now, but have been playing League since 2009 during my senior year of high school. Over the years my involvement with the community evolved from just being a player, to starting a club at my school, running college tournaments for over 300 schools, and running events for pros and challenger teams.

Now my focus is entirely on uLoL esports. I want to help build the best competitive outlet we possibly can for college students to show off their skills as a League player while being able to remain active in school. In 2014, I joined Riot as an intern to build the North American Collegiate Championship with Riot Jaws and have since then helped evolve it to the uLoL Campus Series. If you’re interested in checking out some collegiate action, the Campus Series finals will be live from PAX East, April 23-34, on watch.lolesports.com.

On the Rift, I regularly switch between being a Jungler and a Top laner. My favorite champion is probably Nunu, specifically Grungy Nunu (Nunu bot’s alright too). Even though I’ve been playing for 6 years, I’ve peaked at gold 3 for the last 3 years mainly because every couple weeks I decide I want to main a new champion…yes, I’m that guy in champ select. Besides League, I love FPS and survival games.

Let's talk!

Hello! Thanks for taking questions. I was wondering how a college would go about getting involved in the uLoL Campus Series. I hope to be attending the University of Michigan beginning in 2017, and it'd be my dream to play for them in a huge college tournament such as the uLoL one. Is it something that the university's team first applies for then qualifies for? I'd like to find out if U of M is actively trying to get involved in it, or if I need to start suggesting it. Thanks in advance!

The last couple years it was based on a series of large qualifiers. Any team could register and play for their school and then we took the top schools from the qualifier to determine who made it into the Campus Series. We are actually in the process of designing next years Campus Series right now so I don't know exactly what that will look like next year yet.

Most importantly though, a lot of these teams really form at the club level. As a freshman going into college, I would be on the look out for a League of Legends club at your school. Hopefully you will be able to find them at freshman events such as orientation! Back when I was a student and I was looking for League players at my school, I simply posted on my schools subreddit and forums.

:D It's been my dream to be a Wolverine since I was around 7 years old. Wish me luck as I apply soon! Are you a current student or graduate?

WitchKing0072 votes

Naw man, I've got family and friends who went there though. I've been a Wolverine fan all my life, and I wanna go there too! Good luck with your application!

What's your favorite color?

Favorite book?

Favorite movie?

Favorite ult in League of Legends?

And, are you having a nice day?

RiotSherman15 votes

Red

The Phantom Tollbooth

The Matrix

Does Phoenix Stance count as an ult?

I'm doing really well, although I feel like I just gave away all my security question answers! How are you?

Solidair32 votes

well I have all these security answers, so I'm obviously doing well!

But in all seriousness, I'm just chillin out, having a nice relaxing day off of work.

What is your ridiculous big dream for the uLoL esports scene in 5 years??

Now what are your realistic expectations of uLoL esports scene in 5 years??

Thanks!

Hi Sherman!

I'd like to get your opinion on the current one-team-per-school rule in place. Would it be possible to alter this rule for next year to allow schools that do not buy their players with scholarships to potentially have multiple teams compete? I totally get the ruling for scholarship-based programs, but for schools where academics is actually the main focus in attending the university, it seems like such a hindrance especially when they do have 2 (or even more) good enough teams for the campus series! From experience, UBC/SFU/UW all had sister teams with really strong rosters!

How happy were you with the viewer counts from this year? It seemed like the retention from LCS->uLoL was actually quite high on Saturdays, around 30% is really good! I would imagine it helps a lot that a large minority of the player-base is currently attending college/university?

To be honest, I don't see the 1 team per school rule going away. From the perspective of growing the program and the scene, we think the best way to expand is to give as many teams as possible a chance to be in the spotlight and if we just ended up with a lot of schools with sister teams playing at the highest level, only a couple of teams and a small amount of players would be able to really enjoy collegiate esports.

I was extremely happy with the way this years broadcasts were received, I think it really opens the door to spotlight more games and students

Top teams and players are usually all master/challenger or at least D1+ It also depends which region you compete in, West and North have been the regions with the strongest teams.

RiotSherman3 votes

^ Nailed it. Every year we see the level of competition increase and the teams at the top get stronger and stronger.

Hello so i am a president of my college's (culver-Stockton college) esports organisation and we competed 2 years ago but this year we did not because we couldn't find a schedule for when the match's would be held. so my question is for the 2016 year when you put the sign ups out do you think that riot will put the times of the matches to be held on the website as well?

RiotSherman2 votes

We're definitely going to do everything we can to give better promotion of matches and commitments for players. Since last year we launched ulol.leagueoflegends.com and we will be using this as the home for all sorts of information going forward. Expect that you can always look there to find the latest updates around the Campus Series

Start something @ CUNY New York. They have a whole bunch of universities under CUNY. Riot has huge potential if they sign something with CUNY

Sherman? Like Peabody's assistant?

Serious question: At what point do you expect eSports to achieve legitimacy at the collegiate competitive level? Also, do you see possible Title IX as a hindrance or a benefit to eSports at colleges?

RiotSherman2 votes

I personally think that legitimacy purely comes from the players. Similar to esports and how players are advocating for it as a sport, I think college esports will follow suit. As for the exact timing on that, I have some guesses, but I want it to be up to players.

As for Title IX, we aren't sure how this will affect us yet. This is probably the most unfamiliar territory, but the one where we are spending the most time researching. These are the kind of questions that we will have to answer as we move forward.

So, thoughts on the Taric Rework?

Speaking of survival games, have you ever played This War Of Mine?

Pick your top 3 champs who you can comfortably say are your real mains?

RiotSherman6 votes

I've been playing H1Z1 and The Culling lately.

Chogath, Evelynn, Gnar.

Funny story, my roommate in college back in Season 2 was the number one ranked Chogath player and had the most used Chogath guide on solomid.net, so I just absorbed my Chogath skills by sitting in the same room as him.

TonyTonyMordecai2 votes

Thats pretty cool!

I sadly have to put Teemo as my top main... With Ekko and Ashe behind him, but Twitch is treating me well lately.

Speaking of guides, I have a jungle teemo guide on mobafire (titled Scumbag Teemo Jungle), and it's gotten a good amount of views recently. I'm fairly surprised, tbh. Didn't know people were that curious about Teemo Jungle, lol.

Any interests in anything other than games? Like anime as a example.

I'm a software developer by trade and I watch a ton of TV/Movies. However, I'm still a complete nerd and spend most of my time playing video games.

Any thoughts on updating the qualifier format for next year? Felt bad for clearly strong teams that didn't make it this year because of unlucky pairings against other top teams in early rounds.

RiotSherman2 votes

We are definitely looking into better forms of seeding for next year. We don't want to knock out good teams at early stages.

In particular and especially in the past, many collegiate players in the West region feel/felt as though they were at a disadvantage. (i.e. "west is best," or west is stacked) Although it does add to the excitement that we separate colleges by regions for competitive diversity, does this not also in a sense take away from the competitive integrity? If one particular region yields players of lower caliber, would that not mean that there could be teams in other regions that don't advance forward despite being better simply because they are in a more difficult region?

Good Idea. I think I would sit-ups and push-ups. I will do one push-up for every point in death and then double it. For sit-ups I will triple. What good way to emphasize fitness and LOL. #hashtag #blessed
