What is the point of the 10 game placement period, seriously?

Before the reset, I was in silver 2. In my 10 games I went 7-3, thought I did pretty well. I come out of that 7th win to find that I was placed into silver 4. So I wonder what is the point of this system? You do better than average and LOSE rank? How does that work, and why? Even if you go back to the very end of season 4, before the preseason I was in silver 4 already, I feel if I'm being placed based on nothing I did in the preseason I should have at least improved in rank with a 7-3 record. What am I not understanding here, anyone?

The point of the system is to set a new rank for you for the new season. The point of season's is to reset your rank to a point closer to the starting rank that everyone would have if they had never played ranked before. So there, that is the point. Yes, you will drop. Most people will drop. The only people that theoretically shouldn't are people who start below whatever the starting mmr/rank is.

You did get placed better then what you would have (most likely) had you gone 3-7. However, being as you are close to the starting rank (I assume its around low silver/high bronze) placement matches will not make as big of a difference then they would if you were plat/diamond before the year.
