I've seen people do this but I have no idea how to actually get it to work.

Have you tried setting your keyboard to the Simplified Chinese Pinyin input?

Or if you don't want to do that just copy and paste characters from Google translate.

first you keyboard input needs to be set to chinese second you need to learn chinese or simply copy and paste from a translator (why do you even want chinese in your stuff anyway?)

I can actually offer up a real solution. If you're running windows 7 pull up the control panel and go to "Add a language" and you can add Chinese from there. There are a few ways to enter it in, use romaji and it'll automatically change it to kanji/characters.

If you're running windows 8 it's about the same. Go to control panel and go to add a language. Then go click on the correct language because it shows up in a different format than 7.

To switch languages press ALT+SHIFT and it will automatically swap languages. I know this because I speak japanese, hence I need to keyboard for kanji/kana :D
