Hey guys, welcome to this week’s 'Meanwhile in Top Lane...' post, with hawt banner courtesy of Crazy Boris.

A lot happens in a week - interesting discussions constantly pop up throughout the League ecosystem only to be replaced by the newest hotness and fall out of visibility. Hot topics of discussion don’t always stay that way for very long, so unless you’re on top of it all day every day (and who has time for that when there’s a ranked ladder to climb?), it’s easy to miss a lot.

As we mentioned in our test post, with this in mind we'd like to try out a weekly post featuring some interesting conversations you may have missed as well as upcoming discussions opportunities.

Hot on the trail of his digital comic, the team behind everyone’s favorite time-shatterer took a few seconds (sorry) out of their day to host a Q&A sesh.

Machine learning, so hot right now

After giving context on why new features are taking a while, Lyte delivered awesome in the form of a new system that delivers evidence of negative behavior to reported players and enforces punishment within 15 minutes.

Mmm placebo, everyone’s favorite flavor

Scarizard and co kicked off their Live Gameplay Q&A series, complete with interesting anecdote about the placebo effect of nerfs and buffs.

Redditor u/Krale_EDM gave us not one, but two new pieces in his project to compose an orchestral theme for the top voted champion every week.

Ulquiorra995 proposed a couple ways to nerf LeBlanc by adding counterplay, and was in turn countered (not sorry) by some folks highlighting already-existing ways to counter her.

Lore, launch stories, and bios, oh my!

Mirage Night kicked off a discussion about the latest champion story pieces, with Rioter ShadowStorm jumping in to discuss specific questions and offer his personal perspective as a player on League lore’s direction..

Riven mains HATE this guy

Diamond player BrokenSoul24 whipped up an impressively exhaustive guide on how to beat Riven in any matchup, basically nerfed her for us - study up!


For those wondering “WTF happened??”

Lots of discussion around the most recent, special 50-minute episode of TSM: Legends, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at what led to the team’s sub-optimal results at MSI and how they handled the aftermath.

Meddler hopped into a thread to chat about the philosophy behind the proposed changes to Utility masteries.

No offense, but the way you glossed over the controversy ShadowStorm created in an earlier thread is really depressing. The reason for the thread you linked to was that ShadowStorm expressed a sentiment elsewhere that showed the huge disconnect between the company and their lore fans.

Is this to be expected?

Hey Terra,

Can you elaborate on how you felt that particular thread was glossed over? We aim for the summaries to be both compelling and as accurate / comprehensive as possible, but given space limitations meeting those criteria (and any other specific requirements) can certainly be a challenge. Thanks for the feedback!

Nothing in the thread itself was glossed over; I think the complaint is because that thread is an offshoot from a seperate thread. ShadowStorm came into a thread about Ekko's short bio, with the prevailing opinion being it was disappointing. They asked for the playerbase to wait until Ekko was officially released to complain about his lore, no doubt knowing about the comic coming up, which wasn't released yet; he did this by pointing out that most recent champion releases got several pieces of lore outside their written bio in the client. The fans did not appreciate ShadowStorm seemingly brushing them off (lore fans tend to get angry whenever a Rioter tells them to wait and see how things will turn out), with one person complaining that the other stories had little substance. ShadowStorm replied that whether or not those stories worked well as a way to introduce the champion was 'a seperate discussion'. So someone made a thread called 'The Separate Discussion' to talk about that exact issue.

I don't personally see it as that much of an issue (the original thread is much smaller than the separate discussion, so it makes sense the latter is on this list and not the former) but it's fairly easy to see why a red post listing a bunch of useful discussions ignoring a discussion that had every red post downvoted heavily can piss some people off.

The reason behind the thread you linked by Mirage Night is that it stemmed from a discussion in this thread, started by Lao Fu the Tiger .

In Lao's thread, which was about the lack of lore coming about Ekko (the PBE client lore was just leaked) ShadowStorm came and said, in essence,_ "Geez, guys wait until the full lore is released before you draw your pitchforks."_

A reasonable suggestion to any other group of League fans. However, League's lore fans have been the most mistreated and ignored members of the community by Riot over the past four years, so to say this was particularly arrogant and ill-advised.

In essence, ShadowStorm created another kinds of storm (no pun intended) that went on until the conversation moved to Mirage's thread. That extra context puts the thread you linked into a better perspective.

Therefore, I would have written your summary as:

After starting a storm of a different kind in another thread, Riot Shadowstorm joined in this discussion started by Mirage Night about the latest champion story pieces and to discuss specific questions and offer his personal perspective on League lore’s direction.

Or something to that effect.

Hey Terra,

Appreciate you taking the time to clarify. Given the rather charged (INTENDED) conversation in those two threads, we definitely made an extra effort to keep the summary objective - we want these blurbs to provide the wide variety of players who may read them with context but hopefully not bias. Regardless, your feedback is useful, and your more fundamental point about the preceding thread containing valuable context is of course well taken. Thanks!
