Why do people first time a champion in ranked?

This is probably one of the oldest questions in league of legends. I am currently a bronze 2 player who started late 2013 and playing ranked in early 2014. In my promos a player decided to choose Shen as our midlane laner against a yasuo. Since we needed a tank I was fine with the idea. Unfortunately he was not building tank as we found out in chat he was going full ap shen. He fed not only yasuo but trynd as well and on top of that he would not listen to our team. On tilt like most people would as as a lv 14 adc with no escape from aginst a lv 17 trynd and 16 yasuo, I looked him up and as the title states it was his first time playing shen ever from what the the lol website states.

TLDR: A player first time full ap shen in my ranked promos and I cant comprehend why. I want to hear opinions on why this happenes and what goes on in these players minds.

Well I'll give my two cents when i played ranked. Me being a support main, i have practiced with alot of supports and can play them fairly well. In Draft mode, its first pick. i got stuck with mid lane (my worse) and they banned my only trust worthy mid pick le blanc. So i got stuck with playing katarina for the first time and didnt know what to really do. I remember i always went in first with shunpo, q, w, ult and run for my life. I was clueless. Does that brighten up the mystery? i hope it does.

Well, i had like 2-3 games on leona before getting stuck as support in ranked and picked her. Good thing shes pretty easy and the enemy bot lane was BAD. iirc, at the time i wasnt as big on playing support (or as good) and they probably banned my best support (blitzcrank)
