Why do people first time a champion in ranked?

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ FULL THING JUST SKIP TO THE BOTTOM FOR TLDR.

This is probably one of the oldest questions in league of legends. I am currently a bronze 2 player who started late 2013 and playing ranked in early 2014. In my promos a player decided to choose Shen as our midlane laner against a yasuo. Since we needed a tank I was fine with the idea. Unfortunately he was not building tank as we found out in chat he was going full ap shen. He fed not only yasuo but trynd as well and on top of that he would not listen to our team. On tilt like most people would as as a lv 14 adc with no escape from aginst a lv 17 trynd and 16 yasuo, I looked him up and as the title states it was his first time playing shen ever from what the the lol website states.

TLDR: A player first time full ap shen in my ranked promos and I cant comprehend why. I want to hear opinions on why this happenes and what goes on in these players minds.

Well I'll give my two cents when i played ranked. Me being a support main, i have practiced with alot of supports and can play them fairly well. In Draft mode, its first pick. i got stuck with mid lane (my worse) and they banned my only trust worthy mid pick le blanc. So i got stuck with playing katarina for the first time and didnt know what to really do. I remember i always went in first with shunpo, q, w, ult and run for my life. I was clueless. Does that brighten up the mystery? i hope it does.

No. Next time pick a support and take it mid. It's more useful to have a "good" bronze player than a meta pick.

I'm silver btw, and I honestly believe i'd start getting flamed for picking morgana or zyra mid. It was a lose-lose situation.

My main mid laner is Morgana lol. Her damage is insane, pushing power through the roof, and really really safe to lane with.

It does shed some light on the topic but that is one situation of many. With what happened to you it seems that you were trying to keep your team happy and yourself safe from harassed by picking somthing in the "meta" imo. From my experience in ranked it seemed its more likely for someone who picked a champ in its non meta lane to get flamed if the flamer is proven right when s/he makes a "it's not meta it won work" type of claim. There are a good bit of supports that can be thrown in to the mid lane as well like karma, zyra, annie, and morgana that once were mid laners snice you can play allot fairly well. A champion that you know how to play well will always trump playing meta with no clue how the champ you're playing works. Plenty of supports do tons of damage when built for something other than support. Even so, you could still build support mid and out sustain them until your jungler comes to gank. Then it's suddenly 2v1 against a support and jungler who both generally have loads of CC and/or damage if there is no CC. (The damage v. CC thing is more directed at junglers such as Shyvana.)

Well, i had like 2-3 games on leona before getting stuck as support in ranked and picked her. Good thing shes pretty easy and the enemy bot lane was BAD. iirc, at the time i wasnt as big on playing support (or as good) and they probably banned my best support (blitzcrank)
