I actually did that the other day as Annie. I was 5th pick with 4th taking my main role and 3rd taking my main midlaner (Lissandra). I realized I was out of practice with both Syndra and Orianna and I was on CV with a friend at the time so I was just like 'Yo Caleb who do you play against Ahri?' And he was like 'Annie' 'Why Annie?' 'I always play Annie or Ahri mid' I told him that doesn't help and he's like 'you just need a midlaner with hard CC, so like really, Annie'.

I started the game 0/3 after a really poorly played jungler gank (poorly played on my part) and then I went from 0/3 to 2/5/1 and picked up that super late like 16 minute RoA and proceeded to go 12/5/9 and pretty much carry (as botlane and top had both lost lane or went even).

I first timed Vayne in ranked last season because my trade didn't go through so I had Leona runes/masteries. I went 4/0/4 and had pushed to inhib before the enemy team surrendered at 20. I first timed Nami in ranked on my birthday last year after my friend gifted her to me because I didn't realize it was ranked. So last January I think I started the season out 4/0 with her. I had about a 60% winrate with her for a lot of the season.

I first timed the new trist in ranked in a similar fashion to the Vayne. My Leona did more damage than me for a lot of the game and I'm pretty sure if we won that one our botlane was pretty much carried. I feel like I often play Top/Midlaners for the first or second time in ranked either that or I end up something stupid like full AP Janna mid and go 4/1/14 against a Malzahar. It more depends of if my teammates rage when they see me trying to pick Janna mid that determines if I'm playing a champ I know well or not.

I only would ever first time a champ in ranked if I am not doing a comfy role. If I am off-role I am likely going to be bad anyways and I know most people would rather not have Aatrox mid and I would rather not play him mid. So I may aswell try to counter the enemy team and play to the best of my capabilities. (mid is my least played role)

As long as I do not pick a champ that requires heavy practice like Azir I should at least go even, even if it is my first time on them. (Heimerdinger, Lux, Annie, Malzahar, old Ahri and Karthus are some of the champions I have done mid for the first time with success)

I first time Ahri the other day... did the best on my team. Died alot but had most kills and most assist and most gold. At my elo I can first time several champs and be more effective than everyone on my team.
