Anyone ever try using just a number pad to play? I'm curious how well it would work. I attached an example of a mechanical one. I'm wondering if maybe you rebound the keys and turned the thing sideways? A bit cheaper than buying a full mechanical keyboard.

Im fairly new to League (started in March) and have played with the num pad only since I started up until about 3 weeks ago when I bought a corsair mechanical keyboard. It worked perfectly for me! However the small compact area of the num pad compared to the standard Q,W,E,R has made it more comfortable for me to convert to the standard keyboard play. If the smaller space is not an issue for you it definitely works. Again for me it was a comfort thing as to why I changed to standard keyboard play.
I have a gaming keypad I use for MMOs, but I have not found it necessary for league. You don't have nearly as many active abilities, and it would be a PITA to type anything.
