ELO Help

I really like this game and I enjoy competing in ranked for basically one reason. I want to see how high I can go and see if I can make it to gold before the end of the season. Now I am a realistic guy and I know that being at silver 5 my chances of getting to gold before the end of the season are not great.

There is something that is just bugging me though. I check my games on lolking after matches, and it seems like games I am losing all have one thing in common. Either my team has the lowest level player (yesterday I had a bronze three on my team) or the other team has the highest level player (I have lost games where the other team had a silver 3). Now personally I don't mind being matched up in lane against a silver 3 because I play smart most of the time and I can handle a tougher opponent. But it is very disheartening when someone on the other team is higher level and just destroying my teammates.

Now I am really not trying to complain here, but I would really like to know if we could just have matchmaking put us together based on our tier and level within that tier. I want games where I am matched up with other silver 5 teammates and opponents. I don't mind waiting an extra minute or two for matchmaking to put me into a team of equal tier status.

I would really appreciate some feedback on this. And, I also have some questions that I was wondering if people could answer:

  1. What does the matchmaking system use as criteria for putting players together on a team?

  2. Can this criteria be changed to put players of the same tier in a match together?

  3. Do teams come out unbalanced and if so why?

  4. Hypothetical situation: I lose three games in a row and then crush the next two games then lose three more in a row and again crush two. I never level up to silver 4 because I lose more than I win. Am I really at my max level or is the elo system jumping me up for every win making it too hard to win after that so I lose a few? In other words do I get penalized with tougher matchups when I do really well in a game and carry hard?

Thanks for your feedback.

Basically, as the system stands you have to grind to get higher which makes no sense. That's no way to determine someone's skill. A new player should be in the lower tiers assuming they don't have a lot of natural talent which you occasionally see and a very skilled player shouldn't get stuck low and then have to grind to where they belong.

All of your questions are based on one assumption that tier=player level, which is often not the case. Some examples are 1. diamond players are using their bronze/silver smurfs; 2.a person is platinum as top laner but silver as adc; 3. one may not have played enough number of games to reach his/her true Elo; and 4.people are recovering from a long recession, getting tired, or intentionally trolling. In cases 1&3, the skill of the player is undervalued, and in the rest two it is the opposite. The current Elo system tries to counterbalance these factors, which is the reason you see an apparently unbalanced tier arrangement.

Overall it is hard to judge a player's skill, regardless of what system is used. Current system has done a fairly good job. Keep playing more games will definitely relief your concerns, since an adequate size of samples is the essence of statistics. By no means one can carry a whole sucked team, but a good player is going to shine wherever he/she is.
