Incentive for honoring players.

Good evening, long time player, first time poster. When I first started playing LoL about 2 years ago, I noticed a decent number of summoners had ribbons from the honor initative. However, in the past several months while I have played at least a game or two every day I have seen a total of one ribbon. Just one. To encourage players not only to honor their fellow players after the game but also to be mindful of other players behavior aside from the bad I propose offering incentives for honoring players. While I am unsure of how feasible my particular idea is, I would suggest that when a summoner honors a fellow player for friendliness, teamwork or helpfulness, if the player they honored receives a ribbon, signifying that other players also see these positive qualities, the players who honored the ribbon holder should get a small token, perhaps an IP boost for 3 games or so as incentive to observe their fellow players behavior and rightly give honor where it is due. As restrictions go, this should not apply to people the player Q's up with to avoid abuse of the incentive system. None the less, even if my idea is not practical with the system as it is, I would like to see some motivation for players to honor their fellow friendly, helpful and team oriented players. Thank you for your time.

Long time MMO player here speaking in response. The honor system is nice and can really bring a boost when you see that players have honored you after a good match. Unfortunately its an easily abused system so creating any kind of bonus for receiving or giving honor points doesn't solve the main problem of trying to keep the toxicity of the community down.

Honestly, I have thought on this and can't come up with a great solution. The toxicity is partly a natural side-effect of the pressure to win to keep and improve rankings. Players end up taking things far too personally and that can snowball worse than a fed Zed resulting in a torrent of nasty chat messages during and after a game. The usual suggestion is to "ban" the ones being negative, but the same people who are hyper-competitive are also often the ones who will pay good money for skins and other items so for Riot banning the trolls is not a good business practice at the margins. They have chosen to try to generate a community system where the other players work to tame the trolls. It might work, I've seen a few games where it has had some effect, but I have also seen others where players openly called for a certain player to be reported, even by those who had not been a party to the rants and negative comments. This does not help as it makes players defensive and more likely to lash out.

There does need to be an incentive to be honorable and friendly in game. But the best way is to change the culture of the gamers and the gaming in general. Ranked play is sadly not the best play to do this.
